Inspired from the PV Music Video "Just be friends" by Luka Megurine.
Here is my view of the explanation behind it.
It is sung from the boy's point of view. He doesn't want to let go of their relationship, but he has no other choice. He feels that if he continues, she'll just become hurt in the end. Many of us know this feeling. When we can't continue loving someone, but we have no choice but to 'cut the string', and move on.
