The soldier was first given a club. Later that club became an axe, and then a spear. Even later the spear gave way to the sword. During this time he began to wear armor. If he was lucky he got a helmet.
Times change. Swords gave way to guns. Armor went out of fashion but came back in a whole new form. Energy weapons became popular... and armor went away again. Here it is, yet again.
