• Chapter 5

    Note

“Lindsey!” he called. Jordan was jogging towards me smiling. He looked extremely happy. He was cute in a child sort of way. Looking at him happy made my heart skip a beat and I smiled at him back trying to control my breathing.
“Hello Jordan,” I said as he got to me, “what’s up?” “Nothin’. I just wanted to hang with you.” He grabbed my hand and led me to class. It’s very…awkward to have someone you barely know hold your hand to class but when he touched me my skin burned with delight. I felt safe around him. And…people were staring at us. I blushed.
“I have your first few classes Lindsey, mind if I sit with you today?” he asked sweetly. I smiled at him because when we got to class he let go of my hand and made an unbearable face. “No, of course I don’t mind.” “Sweet,” he replied. He gave me a huge grin. It was so easy to make him happy.
We got to class and took our seats together. He started writing something in his notebook. I faced forward curious about what it was. He tossed a note to me and then turned away trying to hide a laugh.
I opened the note and shoved it under my text book. I was too much of a coward to have a teacher catch me reading a note.
It read, “ Hey I think Tony is watching you, think he’s interested in you?” I grimaced and looked back at Tony. And unfortunately there he was, staring at me. When I met his gaze he flushed and looked the opposite way pretending to listen to Mr. Write.
I wrote back to Jordan,” Maybe, but for myself, I’m not interested.”
I threw it at him and I watched his expression as he wrote. He was making a funny face like he was trying to scare someone. He wrote back,” Anyone you ARE interested in?”
I looked down to think about that for a moment and wrote back in huge letters,” Maybe, it’s not certain yet.”
He shook his head laughing silently but whispered,” I’m sure you’ll find someone.” I sighed and pretended to read, to get my mind off of the boyfriend subject. I highly doubt that I could have someone that loved me. I’m not at all beautiful or smart. How could anyone choose me? Stop it I thought. You don’t need to think about love right now.
Jordan tapped my arm softly and I looked at his face. He looked sad and torn, how curious. I had to ask,” Jordan what’s wrong?” He let go of my arm and faced forward. “Nothing, never mind,” he murmured,” But, when you go home tonight…promise me to go straight home, don’t stop anywhere.”
I was bewildered. “What...why?” I asked not being able to breath. He sighed and stared at me now and studied my face. “Let’s just say…this isn’t a safe town. Just please…go home.” Still stunned from where the conversation led to, without thinking specifically about why he said that I nodded. The bell rang and we stood up to leave. I was the last one in the class, Jordan in front of me. He stopped suddenly and embraced me. He held me snuggly into his chest. He whispered in my ear gently,” Be careful.”
