• Heartbreak

    - great sorrow, grief, or anguish.

    ---

She grasped at her chest, her other hand placed against the wall as she sunk down to her knees, gasping for breath as tears slid without control down her red cheeks.

    He had left her.

Her eyes squeezed shut. He might as well have driven a knife through her chest, for surely such a pain must seem like nothing more than a mosquito bite compared to the agony she now felt.

    Heartbreak... It didn't make sense.

Heartbreak. A broken heart. She let herself taste the word and the meaning, but still could make no sense of it.

Was it truly heartbreak she was experiencing now?

Why would they call this heartbreak? Her heart wasn't broken - it was shattered. Her lungs felt like they were burning, there was a huge knot in her throat, every heartbeat hurt against her chest, her knees were shaking and her legs and thighs felt so increadibly weak, and her head was pounding, as if every pound was the ticking of a bomb which would eventually explode.

Heartbreak. She laughed, her voice cold and harsh to her own ears.

Why do they call it heartbreak when it feels like your entire body has been broken beyong repair?

And so she looked at herself in the mirror, and she could no longer see the woman she used to be.

Just a hollow shell with a shattered heart and a broken body.
