• Rae’s run
It all started on the night of December 21st. I was walking back from University of the West Indies TTO Annual Christmas Party. Normally, I would not even be out at 1o’clock in the morning, but I hadn’t seen everyone in so long and Declan kept me back to talk and when I realised the time, everyone who was living off campus already left.
Declan turned to me and asked “Rae, re yuh gettin home good tonite?” his face turned towards me worried “Cause you could stay with meh an Jac.” I shook my head, smiling, “Declan, I good, ah doh want to disturb yuh.” I sighed
He laughed and said “Kay, buh be careful walkin home eh.” I nodded and walked towards the automatic glass doors. The crisp, cold breeze blew into my face as I walked out the door and towards the security booth and entrance to the campus. The security guard walked out as I neared the booth and shone his flashlight in my eyes.
“Excuse me, Miss the gate has been closed for the night, but are you going to come back because curfew just passed.” He said gruffly. “Oh I’m sorry; I don’t live on campus and didn’t know they have a curfew.” I said, “That’s fine, you didn’t know about the curfew but be careful on the road tonight.” He replied firmly.
“Okay, thank you!” I smiled and walked away into the night. As I reached, the street, the dead silence greeted me. There was nothing, not even the rats were out, my footsteps echoed throughout the street, my heartbeat thundered in my ears, I had the strange feeling that someone was watching me, so I looked around my hair whipping back and forth against my face, but in the pitch black darkness, I could see nothing ,not even my own hands.
Suddenly, I was frozen, I couldn’t move nor breathe and it was then I heard it the soft rumble of an engine, panic filled me. Immediately, I began to run, the soft rumble became a loud roar as the vehicle raced after me. I willed my feet to run faster, as the vehicle came up behind me, my head turned towards it and the light from the headlights made me trip. My head impacted against the pavement with a sickening squelch.
My body crippled with pain but I could still make out the sounds of screeching tires, then a car door opening. I tried to crawl away from the approaching footsteps but then a boot stepped on top of my back. I couldn’t breathe and as that boot pressed down more I started to suffocate. Black spots appeared before my eyes, but just before I lost consciousness, I saw a pair of black leather shoes.
The first thing I noticed when I woke, is that I was in a room alone and it was not my own. Then I noticed the large steel door trapping me inside. I ran to it and began pounding on the door “Let me Out, Let me out!” I shouted until I had no voice. I slumped down to the floor exhaustion finally catching up with me. As I tiredly walked towards the small bed, I noticed the walls were a simple teal and the room itself was bare of anything I could use to help me.
As I lay upon the bed, I heard the steel door open and footsteps walking towards the bed, immediately I turned my head to face my attacker. He had coarse black hair, looked to be 5”11 in height, with dark brown eyes that seemed to follow my every movement. His nose looked as though it had been broken many times before and his lips twisted into a sadistic smirk.
I shivered with those eyes on me, it made me feel dirty, he reached out with his hand as though to touch me but as soon as he tried I kicked out and tried to find something to fight him with, it was futile there was nothing in the room I could use. As he regained his balance he walked towards me and started the worst beating I ever had. He did everything he could to stop me from getting away. He slammed me unto the bed pushed my face into the bedding and ripped my clothes off I guess you can only assume what happened next but I blacked out yet again.
When I woke up I was in a room with five women and two children, the voices of the men flittered through the walls but I could tell that I wasn’t in my country anymore, how? The men all spoke Portuguese, when I turned to one of the women across the room I asked “Where am I, Where is here?” she looked at me with such sorrow and pain and says "Ou nan Brezil, nan men mèt nou an, mwen renmen anpil .”
