• The candle's lit, she's walking
    down the dusty hall.
    Face so smeared and dirty
for this little girl, so small.
    The floorboards creak, she's frightened
she doesn't want to wake her now.
For if her mama's up she knows
she'll get punished, who knows how.
    Tip-toe quickly, quietly
    she sees the door ahead.
Stubs her toe, and "Ow!" she cries
    ...her mama's out of bed.
Starts going faster toward her room
    now that mama's awake.
She chases her, yells and screams
    can't she see her mistake?
Tears build up in the girls eyes
as mama throws her into the door
    Satisfies she walks away
the little girl falls to the floor.
And once again the five year old
limps over to the window to pray.
    Hoping to God that mama
will just love her a little someday.
    Asking how her daddy is
and why he left her here.
    Telling him what she misses
in her eyes there forms a tear.
The girl looks up to the sky
and goes weak in her knees.
She knows what's going to happen
    it's daddy's smile she sees.
He extends his arms, as she does
and pulls her up into his own.
And they both drift off to heaven
    leaving mama all alone.
