Grayson moved around his classroom, making sure that it was ready for the day. After all was said and done, he contented himself with making sure that his notes for the day were ready and within easy reach. After that was accomplished, he went ahead and wrote on the board the subject for the day.
"Hello class, and welcome back to History of Magic. This year we have quite a bit to cover, so we will not go over what you have learned over the last five years. I trust that you already know that information by heart for you to be in this class."
He pointed toward the board, where the topic was written. "Now I know that all of you may be familiar with Voldemort and his rise to power, so we shall focus today on the first war. During the 1970s, Voldemort began to gather followers who were eager for a share of his power. The closest followers of Voldemort were known as the Death Eaters. These years got progressively more dangerous and violent. As Voldemort's influence grew, some witches and wizards were controlled by the Imperius Curse and forced to commit atrocities, including the torture and murder of Muggles. Voldemort capitalized on the prejudice and distrust between the giants and the Wizarding World; the giants became Voldemort's followers and killed and tortured many people.
"The Dark Mark was used by Death Eaters to indicate a house where they have committed murder. No one dared to become friendly with strange witches and wizards, not knowing if they were Voldemort supporters. Hogwarts became one of the few safe places in the Wizarding World. Bartemius Crouch was head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement; the Aurors were authorized to use drastic methods not differing greatly from the tactics used by the Death Eaters they fight.
"Around this time, a prophecy was made regarding a child that would be born to defeat Voldemort. Around that time, there were two boys born that fit that criteria. However, Voldemort focused upon the one that was a half-blood, like himself, probably under the assumption that he would be the more dangerous of the two. Dumbledore, learning that Voldemort knew of the prophecy, urged the parents, Lily and James Potter, to go into hiding with their infant son, Harry.
"However, the Potters were betrayed by a close friend. Peter Pettigrew, a former classmate and friend to both of them, had reported to Voldemort about their location upon becoming their Secret-Keeper. However, on October 31, 1981, Voldemort met his end when he murdered the Potters, but failed to murder the young Harry. It was thought at the time that Sirius Black was the Potter's Secret-Keeper, and when Ministry officials went to apprehend Black, he had tracked down Pettigrew and supposedly blown up an entire block to kill the other man. Pettigrew had, however, staged the entire thing, and escaped Black to go into hiding.
"When Voldemort fell, his Death Eaters were apprehended and tried for their crimes. Some, like Lucius Malfoy, claimed they were controlled by Voldemort's supporters and committed their crimes against their will. As there was no proof either way, they escaped punishment. Others, like the Lestranges, tried to find their lost Dark Lord and committed crimes to seek him out, only to be caught and sentenced to Azkaban.
"Now, keep in mind that all of the events that took place ended up playing a part in the Second Wizarding War. Also, keep in mind that most people at the end of the war were glad it was over, and didn't want to be reminded about the atrocities committed or the fear it generated. That is one of the reasons why people, even going into the second war, still refused to say Voldemort's name, and spoke of him as You-Know-Who or He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Few people wanted to be reminded, and fewer still were brave enough to even mention his name.
"Now, I know that this was an exceptionally long lecture, however, next lesson we shall go into more detailed discussions about the hows and whys of the war. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask."

In another time, we would be as one In another place, our lives would've only just begun We walk beneath the sun; we lie beneath the stars We grow upon the Earth and this is what we are It didn't have to be this way, but this is what we are The wasted years have passed so slowly Without connection to my only The end is near; defining lonely Uriel Adair Scott - Muggleborn - Sixth Year - Hufflepuff - Prefect - [feeling: uneasy] [thinking: ...] [with: Sixth Years] [at: Healing] Uriel suspected he wasn't the only one who would be uneasy during this lecture. He knew about both wars- his mother had never been the story telling type but she was the fact telling type, and she told them how she'd been a child when the Second War, and only 12 when Voldemort tried to take Hogwarts. And it was something, she'd informed all of them, that none of them should ever have to go through, because as much as people talked about heroes and bravery and triumphing over evil, you never wanted to have to be brave or have to be a hero. But this was the First War they were talking about, and she'd told them less about that, having not been alive during it, so he took anxious, urgent notes.. A good head and a good heart is always a formidable combination. Is anybody there to show me? You don’t believe in space You don’t believe in light You don’t believe that anything is well beyond your might We walk across the sky and beneath the ocean floor We’re never going anywhere we've never been before It doesn't have to be this way This isn't who we are

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxTheo GibbsxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxGryffindor Sixth Year"Some are born great, some achieve greatness..." Theo walked into class, really having no idea why he took this class...just because it never seemed to interest him at all, but he figured he would just take it to get the N.E.W.T. Taking a seat, he looked around a bit, to see no one but him had arrive up until that point, which was different. He wasn't used to being one of the first to get there. He really hoped that his professor would get used to it, because Theo didn't plan to make a habit of it.
But...as the professor had began his lecture...Theo instantly took a liking to it...and why? Because it was about the wars...which was an idea that has always fascinated him to a degree. The inner workings of war...why it happened. He was also drawn to the fact that a prophecy was made that some kid would save the world. And the fact that Voldemort went to kill a young boy just because of it. Everything was interesting and it left Theo to think that he might actually end up enjoying history...especially at the end when his professor had told them they would be learning the hows and whys...which is exactly Theo wanted to know. Luckily, he was smart enough to take this class and now he would get to find out what he wanted to know about. "And some have greatness thrust upon them"

Seems that I have been held, in some dreaming state... A tourist in the waking world, never quite awake. No kiss, no gentle word could wake me from this slumber! Until I realized that it was you who held me under! Felt it in my fist, in my feet, in the hollows of my eyelids- Shaking through my skull, through my spine and down through my ribs... E L S B E T H L Y N W E N V A S S HUFFLEPUFF PREFECT │ SIXTH YEAR │ BLOOD TRAITOR │ CHASER
Elsie enjoyed History of Magic. She always had; it was like listening to stories. There was never much pressure or tension in the class, except when people got in ridiculous fights, but she figured that was a lot less likely now that only people who actually wanted to be in the class were taking it. She took notes slowly, trying not to miss out on any of the lecture. It was interesting, and to think that her parents had been in school just two years ahead of Harry Potter. They'd been born shortly before the end of the first war, and been still in their teens when the second began. She couldn't imagine living in that sort of tension and fear. Of course, she'd survived an attack by dark wizards at that carnival, but she'd been a little girl then. The memories weren't as clear now, and while they still happened, attacks of that magnitude weren't a common thing. No more dreaming of the dead as if death itself was undone! No more calling like a crow for a boy, for a body in the garden! No more dreaming like a girl so in love with the wrong world... And I could hear the thunder and see the lightning crack! All around the world was waking, I never could go back; 'Cause all the walls of dreaming, they were torn wide open.

xJulius Elias XandersxxxxxCurrently // dating Celaena Snow 2029-2030 Academic Year // History of Magic VI Looking // Handsome spacespac═════════════════════════════════════════════════ spaceJulius stepped into his Newt level History of Magic class not knowing what to expect entirely, beyond a much smaller class and hopefully not as many arguments. Granted his year was fairly mellow compared to some of the years apparently. But, everyone said that the NEWT level classes were way harder and more work, so Julius had that to dread. He wasn't adverse to more work, but he did want to do well and if he was swamped too much how would he make time with quidditch and his classes?
Taking a seat he began taking notes as Professor Powell said there would be no use in review, though Julius doubted he had everything in the past five years committed to heart as Professor Powell assumed they had. Julius was pretty sure he had a good grasp of everything at least. He did well on his OWL in History of Magic after all. When Professor Powell asked if there was any questions, Julius just shook his head and went back to finishing up the last of his notes. ═════════════════════════════════════════════════ Triplet and Quidditch Vice Captain and Seeker ═════════════════════════════════════════════════ (( OOC: xxxxxxxxxxxxxx))

Location: History VI - Monday @ 10:00am Jasper took a seat in history in many ways knowing that he didn’t have to take the class but simply choice too. He’d passed it and granted he had a number of classes he probably could have dropped despite simply passing the classes OWL. It was the first class of the year so he probably shouldn’t be overly bothered. At least Alice had broken down that morning in saying she’d hang out with him after class. He had her till at least three this afternoon which was a positive. As the lecture went on Jasper sat quietly and took detailed notes, several pages worth. Despite not thinking he had all the history memorized the Hufflepuff was grateful they weren’t doing review. Listening Jasper raised his hand at the end with one question on his mind. “How did Peter Pettigrew get away from Sirius Black exactly?” he asked curiously. Status: Curious / Interested With: Class... Wearing: Hufflepuff Uniform OOC: --- You have the intellect of a Ravenclaw, And the protective spirit of a Gryffindor. However, if you are sure about being with Alice, then... Hufflepuff!

Iñigo Albion-Alexandré 16|Sixth Year|Ravenclaw|Seer "The best way to keep something bad from happening is to see it ahead of time..." Iñigo was hesitant on taking History of Magic again. Why? Because it was probably one of his worst classes. The only reason he had done so well on the OWL was because the lone fact that he studied extremely hard for it, and his studying paid off very much. But as soon as he got through the door, all hesitation the boy felt had washed out the door because they would be talking about the First Wizarding War. War was always a point of intrigue for him...strategics...causes...effects...everything. He loved it. He even knew that if he was a muggle, he would've tried to get into the British SAS, but he wasn't a muggle; so he knew his powers could be better served elsewhere. Still, he had a bit of interest in war history and didn't believe that he would have a problem with History any longer. It made him very glad he passed the OWL. Well...more than he already was.
Professor Powell went into a riveting tale about what truly was happening during the first wizarding war. A tale of betrayal and murder, which the murder he could relate too. His own mother was killed by a thug though and not a super powerful wizard. But his uncle had pretty much died protecting him; so he could only imagine how Harry felt. Then again, he was just a young boy so probably didn't remember much.
As the tale came to an end, he raised his hand. "Have you heard any stories of what it was like to live during those times from anyone? I know you said something about not being able to trust anyone, but were authorities quick to put someone to trial or even kill on say...mere speculation that they were a death-eater? I know this might be a better question in Wizard Law, but I figured I'd ask while we were on the subject of it," he said, wondering what the answer was. If he didn't get an answer, surely he would ask the Law professor to see if he knew, more because his curiosity has peaked at the subject. "and you can't see it if you refuse to face the possibility."

Lexine walked into N.E.W.T level History of Magic a little anxious. She wasn't sure why, she'd passed her O.W.L. with flying colours, and history had always interested Lexine, she'd always done well in the class regardless...maybe it was just the pressure of her sixth year that was making her nervous, she wasn't sure, but she was quite sure of the fact that she was, not only anxious, but excited. History had always been her forte, it seemed. As soon as she looked to the board, Lexine was glad to see they'd be focusing on the First Wizarding War for the beginning of the year. Now, the Wizarding Wars weren't all that interesting to Lexine, she wasn't one who care much about war, but she understood the importance of them learning it. She sat down quietly between Iñigo and Jasper a bit before class started. Lexine took notes diligently as class went on. At the end, Lexine sat back a bit and listened to the questions Iñigo and Jasper had, turning a bit to Professor Powell for an answer.
