Chase sighed in relief. Finally, sorting for him was over. Only the feast was left, and he could get some quiet afterwards. Perhaps he would sneak to the library later, though he was sure he would get into trouble. Tomorrow, he would go to the library first thing in the morning.

He searched around the Ravenclaw table to find an empty seat. Once he's found it, he awkwardly sat down, trying to block out the noisy surroundings. His endeavors had been futile so far, so what was different at the Ravenclaw table? He sighed and looked at the Hufflepuff table, where Ariana was happily chatting with other fellow Hufflepuffs.

He turned his attention to the sorting, but lost interest soon after. He decided to stare at a crack in the wall behind the professors' table. It was a crack with a thousand stories to tell. Or at least, that was what Chase kept telling himself.

RAVENCLAW 1st Year

Current Mood: Overwhelmed xxx Location: Ravenclaw Table

Rona wasn't entirely sure what it meant to be a Ravenclaw.

Her parents never received invitations to Hogwarts and their own parents, being so ashamed of this testament to poor magical lineage, hid away in the Muggle world for fear of backlash from their tight pure-blood circles. As was to be expected, attending Hogwarts would be her only link to the magical world... until her 18th birthday, when she could relocate from her stuffy village in London.

The hat pointed out her wit and severity without sounding demonizing, which the first-year greatly appreciated, and called out her house appropriately. The cacophonous roars from "her" table were enough to make the child blush and dig her chin deep into her chest. There were hundreds of students, the majority of them much older than she.

Finding an open seat and disappearing into the collage of black and blue robes was easier said than done, but she managed.

【The Grey Lady】
◢Ghost of Ravenclaw Tower◣

╔══════════════════╗

The Grey Lady glided up the table "Greetings Students" she said as she sat in an open seat. "I am the Grey Lady, Ghost of Ravenclaw Tower" she said. She smiled at the students, a smile that seemed to show that she was studying them all intensely, which indeed she was. "I hope you do your best to keep the House Cup in our hands this year." she said.

"Oh my." Well, that was amazing enough. The first thing Elliot saw when he came to the table was a ghost floating along talking to the students, speaking about a 'house cup'. His mind started skipping along - how on earth did the ghost speak the modern language? From what he had learned so far ghosts were just imprints of deceased witches and wizards, locked in certain patterns. But if she could speak the modern language, that implied that either she died recently, or she was able to learn new languages - and if she could learn, that meant that she could grow, which implied that they were more than just imprints. But... He sat down next to Shina, not quite paying attention to what was going on.

Chase turned his head to see who just talked. It was the Grey Lady, the House Ghost. He only stared at her, dead yet fully present. How lonely was it, to see her loved ones while she couldn't do anything? Chase shook that thought, because he was judging her without knowing anything.

Suddenly, a sense of panic hit him out of nowhere. What has he been doing for the past couple hours? He quickly slapped his arm where the armband gently rested. He felt the embroidery, smooth and flawless, and traced one of the petals. He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply. He was at Hogwarts, sitting at the Ravenclaw table. He exhaled. A new start.

Shina smiled as Elliot sat next to her. She raised an eyebrow as his eyes seemed to glide right over her, distracted by the ghost. She tapped him lightly on the arm. "Elliot, Earth to Elliot. I can hear the wheels turning in your head," she teased lightly. It was great that one of her new friends was in her house. It was too bad that Rue wasn't as well, but the loyalty and family oriented nature of Hufflepuff would be good support if the girl really was a Seer.

Closing her eyes so hard and so often had made Rona terribly gifted at it. It was second nature - when something was seen as frightening or confusing, the girl would close her eyes, count to ten and breath. A clear head made everything a bit easier to understand. This practice did not work as well as she had hoped against the Grey Lady. A warm, gooey feeling arose within her, something comfortably wedged between fear and wonder. This place had not yet ceased to amaze her, from the floating candlesticks just above her head to the row of curious teachers, staunch and smiling beyond the tattered old hat who continued shouting his judgements to the room of expectant upperclassmen.

Hands found one another and clasped themselves just over Rona's lap. She was hungry, but the idea of food appearing out of nowhere wasn't easy to grasp. How was it even real? Where did it come from, anyway? Wizards were capable of teleportation, right? Not one to throw caution to the wind without first considering the consequences, Rona decided it would be silly to sit here and starve and gave her nibbled bottom lip a rest to try a roll.

It was quite real.

Resting her eyes on the children and practical adults at her table, Rona felt a kinship rising. Even if she didn't have any interest in them now, these people -- these witches and wizards -- were like family. The Grey Lady had made that perfectly clear.

Elliot blinked twice before looking at Shina.

"Oh. Right sorry, ghost new thing and whatnot." He grinned weakly at her before picking up his fork and lifting it to the table. "To new boundaries to explore, and knowledge to seek. May we never get distra-oh, this looks good." He shot Shina another grin, stronger this time, as he took some of the nearest piece of food and started eating heartily.

Riley took sure strides as she headed quickly to the Ravenclaw table, her robes flowing behind her. She was excited to see the sorting but more so about the feast. The Great Hall looked just as magnificent as last year. She wondered what the first years thought of it. "Hey, Rosie. Hey, Clare." she said smiling as she sat near her fellow Ravenclaws. She was excited to see them again. "How's it going? Good summers I hope."

A short haired girl sitting nearby looked a bit uncomfortable. Shina suspected she was a muggleborn, overwhelmed by all the blatant magic use. "Hello, I'm Shina Kiremono. Are you excited to be here? Did you know the kitchens are supposedly directly below us, set with tables just like these ones? According to a book I read, the food is prepared, placed on the kitchen tables, and then appears here. Our dirty plates will appear down on the kitchen tables at the end of the meal," Shina chattered lightly as she filled her own plate.

First Year Ravenclaw

A new excited Ravenclaw stepped down from the front of the Great hall. Joseph was overwhelmed about the result of the sorting. He smiled and walked down towards the table. Too bad Eretria wasn't there. But, that was okay, because Joseph would make new friends. He saw a short brown haired girl sitting at the table. It was Rona Patlow. Joseph approached her to greet her and introduce himself.
"Hello there, my name is Joseph, what may yours be?" he asked her politely and gestured a hand shake.

Seeing Riley approach Clare and Rosie, Clare put on a smile. She hadn't talked to Riley much, but she knew that she was nice.
"Hey Riley. My summer was good, just relaxed and read my books. What about yours?" She said to her fellow Ravenclaw and smiled.

Chase overheard Shina's explanation of how the food appears and disappears. It made sense to him, since matter can neither be created nor destroyed. It was one of the fundamental laws of science, the conservation of mass.

He suddenly remembered the spell, Fera Verto, which transfigures animals into water goblets. Magic seemed to have no boundaries, because an animal, composed of carbon, oxygen, and other elements, can be turned into a metal. Rearranging and decomposing the atoms would be detrimental, since the rays emitted during such process would kill anyone within days or weeks, depending on how much radiation a person was exposed to. Not to mention the amount of heat released could evaporate a human within seconds.

How magic does it, Chase did not know. But the simple thought of the impossible being possible was enough to get him curious to come up with multiple hypotheses to explain such miracles. Did the cores of the wand supply the means for such a nuclear reaction to happen? Or rather, was it even a nuclear reaction? He sighed. Chase would look into it later.

He watched as two First Years went to introduce themselves to a short-haired girl. He couldn't bring himself to do what he did with Ariana. That is, making conversation. For some reason, he felt a bit overwhelmed and lost. He went ahead to take a sip of his water, but the water went down the wrong path. He threw a coughing fit, his body's attempt at getting the liquid out of his air passages. You would think that a Ravenclaw knew how to drink water.

((Sorry for the nuclear chemistry rant. X: ))

The anxiety that Cressida had felt upon stepping up to the stool was released with a sigh when she heard the hat whisper in her ear. "Ravenclaw", the sorting hat announced aloud. She certainly wasn't disappointed. Her mother had often commented that it took a brain to look for the loopholes in rules Cressi was so adept at finding. She wondered what her housemates would be like? Would they like her? The questions spun in her mind and she worried how to sort through them a walk at the same time. Her knees shook just a bit as she stood from the stool. Strange, she thought. She had been more nervous than she realized.

Making her way over the the Ravenclaw table, she took an empty seat and looked around. Taking a breath to steady herself, she wondered just what this turn of events held in store for her future. Yes, she realized, she did analyze things quite a bit. Perhaps this would be the right house for her. Well, it was, the hat was never wrong. That much she knew. But, then again, she wasn't quite in the habit of taking the meaning of words too literally, nor was she in the habit of blindly trusting authority. She wondered if her days in Hogwarts would change that.

Interestingly enough, she noticed some of the other First Years looking just as lost as she felt. She wondered how long that feeling would last. She couldn;t remember a time she had felt so out of place. Suddenly one of the boy's started coughing.

"Everything okay?" she questioned, concern replacing anxiety.

Rona was so surprised at being addressed that she nearly dropped her sweet roll. That's not to say that traces of crumb weren't left smeared across her hands by all the juggling, but she held fast none the less. Her dark eyes shot up immediately and fell upon Joseph with little expression. A boy. She'd always gotten along well with boys. They weren't nearly as fussy or curious as the girls at her school - well, her old school, as it were. Anxiety melted, forcing her waxen face into calm half-smile. Or perhaps it was a scowl. After swallowing another mouthful of food, it was apparent that it was more of a scowl.

Perhaps it wasn't intentional, as Rona then abandoned her meal, wiped her hands on the knees of her robes and offered her hand to the boy.

"It most certainly is Rona... Patlow." Throwing on her surname for good measure, Rona suddenly felt far more confident. Motioning to the empty seat beside her with her ruefully empty hands, the tiny girl sighed. "Sit if you like, Joseph."

With that stark and seemingly uninterested first impression, Rona went back to her mouse-like nibbling, eyes wandering from her plate to her fellow Ravenclaw. She did a terribly job of hiding her childish curiosity. He must have known so much more than she did about magic and such and, as one would guess, keeping her mouth shut proved nearly impossible given the circumstances.

How embarrassing.

"I'm not at all excited to be in Ravenclaw. Are you?" Of course her lack of excitement was only because she had no idea what it meant to be in any particular house. She sounded a bit snotty, Joseph would have to find out for himself if she meant anything by her tone.
