You've been acting awful tough lately
Smoking a lot of cigarettes lately
But inside, you're just a little baby, oh.
It's okay to say you've got a weak spot
You don't always have to be on top
Better to be hated than loved, loved, loved for what you're not

»Tesni was collecting any stray papers that might've fallen from her student's bags when she was approached by one. Ye was one of her more quietly attentive students which of course made him one of her favorites (if she had favorites obviously). She turned to give him her full attention and raised both eyebrows in surprise at his request to study Mermish in order to communicate with the Merpeople next week. Well this was certainly a first. "There aren't many books in the library, restricted or otherwise that could help actually learn the language. More help interpret certain shriek frequencies in case you find yourself accidentally treading in Merpeople territory. That said, there is a book, I'm pretty sure, you could mail order from Flourish and Blotts that could help you with what you want to accomplish. I'm forewarning you though, Mermish is an exact and taxing language. You may not achieve all that you set out to by our next meeting. However, if you can successfully imitate a customary greeting without getting gutted I might be able to slide some extra credit your way." Tesni smirked at her last words. "Was that all or did you have something more?"«

"Oh," Rhett said when Professor Yates stated there was no books in the library to help. He was under the impression (probably thanks to his sister) that there should be a book for everything to help. Soon though, Professor Yates explained that there was one he could order from Flourish and Blotts. He would have to send an owl right away with the request then. Professor Yates warned him though that Mermish was not an easy language but the carrot and challenge was held out in front of him. If he could learn a proper greeting he could get bonus points. Smiling he said confidently, "I think I can manage a greeting at the very least. I have a knack for music and language is basically just music especially tonal languages." He was sure that was one of the things his Mum and Dad connected over. Wood nymphs made whatever language they spoke sound tonal and Dad's first language Mandarin was definitely a tonal language. If a wood nymph could learn Mandarin without a book, he was sure he could learn a Mermish greeting with a book. Smiling he added, "That was it, for now, Professor. Thanks for all your help! I'm really looking forward to learning all I can."

»Tesni walked out early that day to the Black Lake to make sure the merpeople had gotten her last message and knew that this was the day. She didn't speak fluent mermish, she doubted anyone that didn't live underwater and have a fish tail did, but she knew enough to get that yes, they'd gotten her message, and that she looked positively delicious that day. She wasn't sure if that was a joke seeing as they don't actually eat humans but she treated it as one and merely responded to their own sharp smiles with a sharper grin of her own. She waited patiently at the edge of the lake skipping stones and playing keep away with the Giant Squid. Of course, the squid kept winning. The fun and games came to an end unfortunately as she spotted her students coming over and gave the squid an "until next time" shiny pebble.

"Afternoon kiddies. Those that haven't already please place their homework underneath that tree over there and we'll get started. Today, as you can probably guess, is our merpeople interaction. We have a few that have volunteered to interact with you students, so treat them with respect. While they are technically classified as 'beasts' they are of high intelligence and even higher propensity for violence if they think they've been wronged. Do not attempt to go into the water with them, standing at the water's edge is fine but if you go too close you may be considered intruding. You may talk to them and if you're lucky they will respond back, though not in English. If you are truly lucky and respectful, they might give you a token, nothing extravagant possibly something like a shiny bauble. If there are no questions you may begin." No sooner had the words left Tesni's mouth did heads start popping from beneath the water and come swimming as close to the students as they could without leaving the water.«

»Tesni was waiting for her students this time with mild interest. She thought her students might enjoy this lecture even if they wouldn't enjoy the note-taking. "Good afternoon kiddies, today we'll be learning about a very magical species of creature: the phoenix. The phoenix is a large swan-sized scarlet bird with red and gold plumage, along with a golden beak and talons, black eyes, and a tail as long as a peacock's. Its scarlet feathers glow faintly in darkness, while its golden tail feathers are hot to the touch.

Phoenixes will usually nest on mountain peaks and are gentle herbivores that are not known for fighting. As phoenixes approach their Burning Day they resemble a half-plucked turkey. Their eyes become dull, their feathers start to fall out, and it begins to make gagging noises. Then the bird suddenly bursts into flames only to rise from the ashes shortly after. In a number of days, they grow back to full size. Thanks to this ability, phoenixes live to an immense age.

The most startling of the phoenix's abilities is its ability to regenerate itself. It periodically bursts into flames when its body becomes old, and rises from the ashes as a newborn chick. This event is called Burning Day, and gives these birds a great life span, as well as the ability to take the full force of a Killing Curse and still be reborn. Phoenixes are immune to the gaze of a basilisk, which would normally kill anyone who has direct eye to eye contact, or petrify through indirect eye contact, such as seeing a glimpse of the massive serpent or its reflection.

The phoenix can also disappear and reappear at will in bursts of flames and take whoever is holding them along, similar to Apparition (though like house-elf magic, they cannot be restricted like wizards are), and boasts magical tears and song. Their tears have potent healing capabilities; for instance, phoenix tears are the only known antidote to basilisk venom. They're also able to bring a person back even from the brink of death, while the phoenix song will increase the courage of the good and strike fear into the hearts of the evil. Phoenixes are capable of lifting a great weight with their tails, such as being able to effortlessly fly up a distance with four people holding on to its tail. They can also leave messages by bursting into flame to reappear elsewhere, leaving behind a single golden tail feather.

Phoenixes are very difficult to domesticate, as Newton Scamander says in his book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which I'm very sure you all have in class at this very moment,: 'The phoenix gains an XXXX rating not because it is aggressive, but because very few wizards have ever succeeded in domesticating it.' There are two known domesticated phoenixes, one Albus Dumbledore's pet phoenix Fawkes, and the other Sparky the team mascot for the New Zealand Quidditch team the Moutohora Macaws. Phoenixes that have been domesticated are extremely loyal to their owners, and would depart to find their own paths if their owners die, rather than finding a new master.

Well, that's enough to get your started right?"
Tesni ended with one of her trademark sharp grins. "Homework, I want at the very least two and a half feet on the phoenix. Everything from what I've said already in class and from the fruition of your own research. Not too difficult right, yes? If there are no questions, class is dismissed." Tesni told them with a short shooing wave.«

»Tesni was currently having a staring contest with the star of the day's lesson and she was positive she'd win this time. The phoenix cocked it's head to the side slightly and she was sure he or she were amused by this as they were every time they did this. It was more tradition than anything plus it did make the time go by quicker. Finally she broke and blinked scowling slightly (more like a pout if she had to be honest) but still offered them a peach half for them to happily tear into. When she turned she saw that her students had snuck in while she was previously preoccupied and cleared her throat to gather their attention. "Afternoon kiddies, as usual place your homework on the stump and let's get started. Today you'll be interacting with a phoenix, this one in particular coming from a conservatory located in the Purple Mountains of Ireland. As such it is a wild phoenix and shall remain so unless they find someone they deem worthy. Which I can almost assure you won't happen today. Try not to crowd around them, just because they're docile does not mean you can crowd and touch it willy nilly. Use the knowledge I'm assuming you have and interact respectfully. Once you've had your turn you're free to leave." «

»Tesni, as per usual, spent her time before class in the Forest gathering herbs for a more casual use than just cooking. When it was time for class to start she parted from the forest casting a scourgify here or there for any dirt that might have stuck to her clothing while using her fingers to comb out any spiders or leaves that might've gotten caught in the curly mane she called hair. As she was tying it up she spotted the tell-tale signs of students walking out to her and straightened up as to present a strong front. If she didn't these little pubescent wankers would walk all over her. After a while when she was sure everyone that was supposed to be there was present she gave an internal sigh and decided that the time had come, the Walrus said.

"Good morning all, and congratulations on passing your OWL's and as you are all now NEWT students I don't have to moddy-coddle you." The Welsh woman gave her customary shark-like grin at her words before the flew back into her blank facade. "Today we will be learning about Merpeople, a class XXXX beast. And yes, their classification is very important. They had the chance to be called 'being' but refused because they couldn't stand being in the same category as Hags and Vampires. Merpeople are sentient beasts that live underwater, and are found all over the world. Their customs and habits are mysterious and unless you've gained the explicit trust of one they will stay this way. They, reportedly, can breathe above the waves for a time, but it is unclear if they can ever truly leave their habitat. Merpeople are creatures resembling half-human, half-fish hybrids, though they are most certainly not half-breeds. Like humans, merpeople come in a variety of appearances, though colours uncommon in humans appear to be widespread in merpeople. For instance, the majority of the Black Lake Merpeople colony have green hair, yellow eyes, and grey skin, all traits that would be very uncommon, if not impossible, for a human to naturally possess. Merpeople also seem to be taller than humans, with seven feet appearing to not be an unusual height, at least for a selkie. Merpeople are divided up into various sub-species or races, depending on where they live. The earliest merpeople lived in Greece, and were known as sirens. In modern times, those merpeople living in warmer waters take on a more beautiful appearance, while those in colder waters, such as the selkies of Scotland and the Merrows of Ireland, are less attractive.

Their exact level of intelligence as compared to humans is unknown, however, they possess many traits beyond those of mere animals. Merpeople have a developed language, Mermish, and have even created music, which they are known, as a whole, to be fond of. On land their singing sounds like a cross between a piercing shriek and a banshee wail while underwater it is one of the most beautiful sounds known. Probably why one such group is known as a siren since they can only be heard underwater while they drown the poor seamen. Anyway. evidence that the Merpeople have a thriving culture is that they live in highly organised communities, some containing elaborate dwellings made of stone, and have been known to domesticate creatures such as the Grindylow, Hippocampus, and Lobalug, the latter being used as makeshift weaponry. Other signs of their intelligence include jewelry and weapon making, production of art (both paintings and statues), and an ability to understand basic communication via gestures.

The merpeople date back to ancient Greece, where they were first known as sirens. By the modern era, however, merpeople have spread worldwide. The history of merpeople's relations with wizardkind, or at least the wizarding British government, are somewhat rocky. Chief Elfrida Clagg refused to accept merpeople as beings under her definition of the term as those who could "speak the human tongue", with Mermish not being considered adequate as it could not be understood above water. This decision upset both the merpeople and their allies the centaurs. Though they were allowed being status under Minister Grogan Stump revised 1811 definition of the term, they would eventually request to be treated as beasts once more, objecting to the fact that such Dark creatures as hags and vampires also claimed that status. Despite being considered beasts at the time, a delegation of merpeople was persuaded to attend the 1692 summit of the International Confederation of Wizards, where they would help decide what to do on the matter of hiding the existence of various magical creatures from Muggle comprehension.

As you may or may not know, there is a colony of merpeople that currently resides in the Black Lake. Next week we will meet by the lake so you may interact with the few who have volunteered. For your homework, I want two and a half feet on merpeople. Include in it what you've learned today as well additional information from your text and any text in the magical creature of the library. You may drop it off to my box in the office or personally at our next meeting. If there are no questions, class is dismissed."
Tesni told them with a nod wondering if there was any way Fanchon would let her chill in her classroom for a bit until her next class. Preferably with her company.«

You've been acting awful tough lately
Smoking a lot of cigarettes lately
But inside, you're just a little baby, oh.
It's okay to say you've got a weak spot
You don't always have to be on top
Better to be hated than loved, loved, loved for what you're not

»Tesni walked out early that day to the Black Lake to make sure the merpeople had gotten her last message and knew that this was the day. She didn't speak fluent mermish, she doubted anyone that didn't live underwater and have a fish tail did, but she knew enough to get that yes, they'd gotten her message, and that she looked positively delicious that day. She wasn't sure if that was a joke seeing as they don't actually eat humans but she treated it as one and merely responded to their own sharp grins with a version of her own.

The merpeople date back to ancient Greece, where they were first known as sirens. By the modern era, however, merpeople have spread worldwide. The history of merpeople's relations with wizardkind, or at least the wizarding British government, are somewhat rocky. Chief Elfrida Clagg refused to accept merpeople as beings under her definition of the term as those who could 'speak the human tongue', with Mermish not being considered adequate as it could not be understood above water.

Tesni told them with a nod wondering if there was any way she had time to firecall Fanchon before her next class.«

You're vulnerable, you're vulnerable
You are not a robot
You're lovable, so lovable
But you're just troubled
Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot
