Heaving the heavy wooden board under his arm, Dom slipped inside of the great hall as most students were filing out the door and to their respective common rooms. It was late, he was honestly surprised there was even any people at the Slytherin table, but most of them seemed huddled together with their textbooks, studying for OWLS and NEWTS.
He probably wouldn't find Damien among them, honestly, he didn't expect to find his serpentine friend for a while. Whatever it was he wanted to say, Dom knew he wanted it kept secret. Out in the open, nothing was suspicious, but, in the Slytherin common room, well, who knows where an eavesdropping ear could be hiding. At least this way, they could see who might be trying to do so...
Maybe he was just being paranoid..?
Regardless, he set up the game of wizards chess and began to eat while he waited. Spearing a piece of bloody red meat onto his fork, he popped it in his mouth and glanced around.

He typically didn't leave the Common Room after the last of the day's lessons and supper, but tonight, something had told him to come here. As he made his way to the Slytherin Table, he saw Dom sitting there, setting up a Wizard's Chess board and eating. He made his way over to the boy, taking a seat across from him, eyeing him with a strange look. He knew they'd been planning to meet sometime this week, but he didn't think they'd set an actual night to do so. Perhaps they had, though, and his little push to come here had been his mind reminding him that he had an obligation he was forgetting. It was more than possible, he supposed, but he hated to think that he was slipping up and forgetting things. He'd always had an excellent memory, until the attack, and the year afterwards. Instead, he chalked it up to luck that they were both here, choosing to ignore the fact that Dominic was clearly waiting on someone. "Evening, mate," he said, making himself a small plate. He was rather hungry himself. He never found much of an appetite at supper; too many people bumping elbows and talking. Perhaps he should start coming here for a late supper every night.

Dominic glanced upwards, though, never really looking as he noticed his only friend had joined him at the Slytherin table. In the back of his mind, he knew he had never set a time for when they should meet, but, it was at that moment that he made the proposed deal did he realize just how bloody terrible he was at chess. Sure, he loved the game for its reckless wild abandonment—or at least, the violence, in any case— but he certainly didn’t want his only friend to see him as just a ‘sports’ or ‘athletic’ type. He was deep, he was smart… When he tried… ”Good to see you mate, I just about thought you were eaten alive by your books,” Dominic chuckled all in good humor. He was already midway through a game of chess, though, going against himself wasn’t nearly so challenging, so, with the wave of his wand, the game cleared away. The broken pieces resettled into their former glory and each piece slid back to its original stance. ”Care to play?”

He did tend to keep his nose rather buried in them. It was just... easier. Than anything. He glanced at the chess board. He eyed it warily. He'd never been overly fond of the game. His father was damned good at it, and he'd never been able to match the man. He supposed it was intimidation. But, a game between the two of them couldn't be so awful, right? He took a quick sip of his drink and gave a nod. "Sure. Although, I won't be able to talk much if I'm trying to keep up with the game." He glanced around. The Hall was all but deserted. He could talk freely here. He doubted very much if anyone would hear. Or care to try and eavesdrop. It wasn't as though any of the few people around would care to hear anything the two of them had to say.

Dominic shrugged admittedly; he wrinkled his nose at the thought of the game as he toyed with a sliver of meat that was still left on his plate. ”Ah, this all jus’ for fun mate, an’ don’t worry, you won’ need too much concentration—I’m bloody dreadful at this, love the game, but can never win to save my life.” He chuckled, an earnest smile dawned on his lips as his crystalline blue eyes glanced down at the game. ”Pawn to rooks three,” he ordered the piece and it slid across the chess board with a loud grind of stone against stone. ”So what’s up mate?” Dom wondered curiously as he leaned forward closer to the game; he knew he’d lose but, he wanted to at least try. During all of this, he hadn’t even noticed the silent presence of Michelle ghosting to the table.
”Blimey, lately…. You just always seem out of it….” Dominic sort of frowned at this and tore his eyes away from the game to glance up at Damien, a swirl of concern behind crystal blue eyes.

His dad usually made much more... intimidating opening moves. He relaxed a bit. Suppose he wouldn't have to be quite so stressed after all. "Pawn to E6," he murmured, watching the small black piece move. Being a chess piece had to be bloody awful. He glanced up at Dom, frowning. "I find it hard to focus on much of anything, honestly. Or, I did, last year. This year hasn't been so bad." He tilted his head a bit, a gesture he hadn't even realized he'd retained from when he'd been friends with Adalaide as a child. He honestly had no idea how to go about explaining what had happened first year. No idea where to start. "You know, first year, it rather bothered me that Adalaide Blythe was doing so well in Charms. I mean, she took right to it, and I couldn't get most of the basic spells right." He paused there. It seemed so stupid now, to have been so very angry at that. He'd just needed practice. She'd been better than him at one bloody thing. And it was something he hadn't even been really trying at! And because of that... he'd almost died. But then, if he hadn't almost died, he wouldn't be friends with Marina. They'd still hate each other. And... he didn't think he liked that thought. Although why was still beyond him.

Crystalline eyes darted back and forth between the game and Damien, occasionally veering off to the side long enough to gather a small helping of fish and chips before popping one in his mouth. His fingers moved forward to slide a white knight across the board silently before those lazy blue eyes of his flicked upwards at Damien. ”Yeah, I kinda know what you mean, mate.” He agreed with a nod, but he’d never truly understand, not really. He’d never been so close to death that he could almost taste it, he’d never seen it right before his eyes. He’d always have the grief of death in his heart, even so young, from losing his favorite aunt.
It wasn’t until Damien had begun talk on their first year did Dominic offer a confused look with a brow rising to the heights of his forehead. He nodded though, never voicing his worry. ”Yeah, I’ve got to say, that was bloody annoying,” Dominic had had just as much trouble in Charms as Damien did, if not more, he was just a bit more clever at hiding it, was all. ”But….
“What’s it matter now?”

Damien Warren EdgeworthSlytherin // Third Year // Slytherin Table // WearingCURRENTLY WITH // DominicCURRENTLY FEELING // WeirdCURRENTLY THINKING // 'How utterly odd that I felt the need to come here... and here Dominic is...'CURRENTLY// single // crushing // loving═════════════════════════════════ Damien shook his head when Dom tried to bring the conversation to a more current spot, moving another piece before he spoke. "I don't think I can... explain now, without you knowing what happened. I mean... I never told you about... what happened to me. Why I was in the Hospital Wing. And... what happened to put me there... it's where the current... issues, came from." He closed his eyes, thinking. Even though he'd managed to mostly move past how traumatized he'd been, it was hard to talk about it. His father had wanted to hear all about it, to the last detail, after he'd come out of the Pensieve. At first, Damien hadn't understood why. He knew his father had watched everything from the Professor's office. But, he later realized Wesley had wanted to hear how his son spoke of it. That was important to him for some reason. Damien didn't quite understand why, but he knew it was. He opened his eyes and looked back at Dominic. "One night, toward the end of the term, I'd snuck out after hours to practice. I didn't want to do it indoors during the day, where someone could see me. It was embarrassing that I couldn't seem to manage what is supposed to be the simplest form of magic. Especially since Adalaide had it so easy. We... we have history, you know that. It was annoying that she was doing so well. I think... I think it also made me feel guilty, for letting my mother tell me she was worthless, and would never be a proper witch." He paused. He'd never actually said, or even thought, those exact words, but it was true. His mother had poisoned him against a girl who'd been his friend, his only friend, and it had made him angry that he'd hurt Ada over something that wasn't true. He had to make himself feel like he wasn't wrong. So he'd gotten angry at her for being good at something he struggled with. And he'd fought to show her up so that he could feel justified in siding with his mother, even though he'd only been a child at the time. "Anyway, I went out to the gardens to practice. I managed to get up to Locomotor, and accidentally sent my book flying across the gardens. When I went to get it, there was a man there. He... he was... terrifying. Something was really wrong with him. He had a cat, and it was meowing at him, and... he... he just snapped all of a sudden. I watched as he cast some spell... the cat was mutilated. Like it'd been slashed into bits by swords or something. I... I made a noise, and he found me. I tried to play it off. He was a professor, and as soon as he saw me, it was like he put on a mask, asking what I was doing out of bed, telling me that I was breaking curfew. He asked me if I would let him take me to the dorms, and then... Marina came out of nowhere. I hadn't even known she was there, and suddenly... She was so stupid. She could have just taken off, kept quiet. I don't know... I guess she was trying to help. It was stupid. But... I tried to tell him we could go back ourselves, that there was no need for him to come with us. I asked him not to give us detention, because of my father. I was ignoring what I'd seen, or trying to, but I couldn't talk straight, I kept stuttering, and he... he said he would have to escort us, but his voice... I knew he wouldn't just take us back. He was going to hurt us, or kill us. He was crazy. And I told Marina to run, and I grabbed her hand and took off. I was trying... I wanted to protect her. She's a girl, it was my responsibility, even if she was bloody stupid. I had to take care of her. It was my job..." He trailed off then. Damien glanced down at his hand. His knuckles were white, and he was gripping the edge of the table hard. The rest of his body was shaking slightly. His voice had stayed low, but he sounded a bit hysterical, he knew. Once he'd started to talk about it, the rest had just poured out. This wasn't like when he'd told his father, when he was trying to explain the what. This was about how he'd felt. About why he was so traumatized. And he hadn't even gotten to the bad part yet. He suppressed a shudder. "I... just give me a minute. I... I need to stop for a second." He glanced at the chess board. "Your turn, yeah?"

Cold, it pierced through his flesh and burned in his bones as he stared down at the chess board, barely, ever so slightly, ever raising his gaze upwards at Damien to confirm he was listening—but he didn’t want to stare at him. A grim, stern line was woven on his features as his gaze hardened the further his friend’s tale continued, but he couldn’t ignore it any longer. After a moment, livid pools of gentle blues rose to catch Damien’s eyes, just for a second, to express the fear circling there. He could feel his muscles tense because the boy across from him had grown tense, and Dominic couldn’t control it, how he felt the emotions coming off of Damien in waves. ”I—uh—yeah,” Dominic mumbled just before he called another move, and the piece slid into an opening, susceptible to a kill.
He didn’t know what to say as his eyes lingered on the chessboard but couldn’t really see a thing, only the replaying horror that he’d just been told… And how hard it must have been to say it all aloud, he didn’t know what to say, so he said the only thing he could—what he would have wanted to hear if he was in his friend’s position. ”….you did the right thing… saving her, standing up to him.” He whispered with his eyes fixed hard on his queen chess piece.

"Yeah. Not exactly the smart thing though, huh? He cast fiendfyre. I shoved her out of the way and it hit me. I don't really remember much after that. The Mythology Professor, she found us, put the fire out. I guess she chased him off? And took us to the hospital wing. And... well, obviously, I was traumatized. I was... I was trapped in my own mind, tortured. I got better, slowly. But, when I went home for the summer... my mother and father... I guess more my mother than my father, really, she locked me up and wouldn't let me out of my room. She said it was for my own good, so that I could get better. But she was ashamed of me. She couldn't believe that I'd risked my life for a halfblood, and that I was so wrecked. I should've let Marina die, and I should've... I should've been perfectly normal after, like it didn't happen. And I wasn't, and it was embarrassing, and shameful. That's why things at home are so weird now. My father... he's proud of me. I always thought he was the strict one, you know? And... I thought he was the reason that things went like they did between me and Adalaide. That he was the one who hated halfbloods and muggleborns and muggles. But... he doesn't. I mean, he doesn't want to mix with them personally, but it's... it's because he feels obligated to keep the bloodline pure, not because he thinks they're worthless or something. But... my mom... she's... she hates the fact that they even exist, I think. Since what happened, she's gotten... awful. My father is proud, but she is so ashamed that she won't even look at me. I don't know what to think of it all. It's... it's kind of horrible." He looked down at the chessboard and made a move, his eyes hard. His mother... he was honestly starting to hate her.

The reflection of false hope we kept the secrets in the dark and the values of our brothers inside the shadows I can see, see me perfectly RUI MARINE OWEN |||Slytherin|||Half-Blood|||First Year||| Rui walked silently into the great hall. Her brother split away from her side as they entered, him heading off to his table, while she wandered silently to the Slytherin table. She had no patience to deal with the imbecile students right now. The year had been basically pointless. She had learned nothing that would help her in her true objective and she hadn't even learned anything that would be fun to use on other students. Nothing good for tormenting those around her, unless you count setting them on fire, which, to be fair, could be amusing, but not nearly amusing enough for her to do it and face the annoying consequences.
