Hogwarts Chess Association

User Image
Founded in 2061 by Kasamir Aloysius Patrovna, a Second Year from House Slytherin, and sponsored by Professor Azalea, this club is dedicated to the learning, study and appreciation of the game of chess. Primarily, the focus is upon Wizard Chess, although other variants can be explored, with an eye towards staging tournaments. There are no requirements in terms of knowledge and experience, as the game’s basics are to be taught to those whom wish to learn.

The club meets twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7:30-8:30AM in the empty classroom outside the Third Floor Landing.

Kasamir was surprised when he got word that his petition to start a chess club got the official nod from his Head of House, and he started getting ready for the first meeting. Once he had a location secured, he made sure there were enough boards and chess sets available for him to set up matches immediately and to start teaching the game to any neophytes whom might choose to check the club out. Kasamir asked the House Elves if they could make something for the first meeting, and they obliged him with a nice tray of cookies and a carafe of pumpkin juice for the occasion.

With today being the first meeting of the club, he took the oppourtunity to bring his Wizard Chess set up from his dorm room, and set it up. While he was waiting for potential members to appear, he set up his board and started working out a chess problem published in the most recent copy of the newspaper. As he was working on a solution to the problem, he became aware of somebody’s presence. Looking up from the board, he saw Brianna was standing on the other side of the table from him.

The Sixth Year heard about the formation of the Chess Club second-hand, surprised she’d not heard it from Kasamir first. Then again, she supposed she shouldn’t be so, Kasamir was not one whom engaged in idle chatter usually. She decided to pack up her own board and pieces and go up to the room where the inaugural meeting was to be held, and she made it up there fairly early; enough so she and Kasamir were literally the only ones who were present. She rather hoped this didn’t bode ill for the nascent club.

She stood there, across the table from her Housemate, watching as he moved a piece, and then an opposing piece would make a countermove of its own volition. He made a couple more moves, and the other pieces reciprocated, and Brianna was about to clear her throat to let him she was there, when he looked up at her. “Keptyin, what brings you here?” Brianna replied, “Heard you formed a chess club, wanted to check it out for myself.”

Looking to learn the game, or have been playing a while?” asked Kasamir, as he focused his blue eyes upon the Sixth Year. Brianna replied, “My great-grandfather taught me to play when I was in primary school. He gifted me with the Wizard Chess set that I brought to club. You?” Kasamir said, “Was working on earning my Master points before… before coming here.” The young man caught himself in time to avoid mentioning the accident which changed the trajectory of his life. ‘Better not to walk down a path best not trod upon,’ he told himself. ‘Today is a day where I move beyond my past.’ He added, “Usually, if I can’t find an opponent, I have to settle on playing against the pieces. My set belonged to my grandfather, and he was a very good player, and so are the pieces as a result.”

Brianna said, “Same, however, when I’m home, I play online against an Artificial Intelligence. So, good enough for the club?” The Second Year gave her a nod , and answered, “I’m hoping to have players of all levels, from beginners on up.” Brianna nodded, and she replied, “Well, at least you know, I’m not a patzer. Care to play a game while we’re waiting for other prospective members?”

Kasamir nodded, and said, “Why not. Let me make a few notes, before setting up the board.” With that, he took a small notebook from a pocket and made a series of notations detailing the moves already made, and the final positions of all the pieces still in play. It was his intention to pick up where he left off at some point and finish the problem. After putting the notebook away, he started setting the board up for a regular game, and then began positioning the board so Brianna would play the white pieces. “When playing living opponents, I always choose Black,” he explained.

As he did this, Brianna held out a hand to stop him, and she said politely, “As do I. Flip a coin instead?” Kasamir nodded solemnly, as Brianna fished a shiny new Galleon from a pocket. She flicked it into the air, and Kasamir said, “Heads.” The coin landed upon the table and spun a couple times before landing with tails facing upwards. Brianna grunted appreciatively, and spun the board round so the black pieces were set before her. “White leads as always.”

Kasamir selected a piece, advancing a pawn, and saw Brianna’s answering move a moment later. After a couple of further moves and counters, Kasamir looked up from the board, and saw Brianna looking straight back at him. “Closed Ruy Lopez opening, I see,” she commented, as she studied her opponent. Kasamir replied, “And you’ve responded with the Chigorin Variation, nice.” Brianna shrugged and commented, “ The AI has used it on occasion, and I’ve learned how to counter. Your move.”

After several more moves, and hearing the protests of the pieces being sacrificed, Kasamir positioned one of his bishops and said quietly, “Mate in five.” One smooth cheek on Brianna’s face twitched, and she made her next move as though she hadn’t heard her opponent’s declarative. “Countered; mate in five,” as she looked up to meet Kasamir’s gaze. The Russian asked, “Draw?” Brianna nodded, and answered, “Draw. Well played, Patrovna.” Kasamir nodded, and replied solemnly, “Well played, Quinn-Smith.”

The two of them shook hands, and Kasamir said quietly, “I should like to discuss with you some matters in regard to Quidditch.” Brianna nodded, and said, “My door is open, as always. However, that can wait. You have a club to open.”

Csuri wasn't normally one for clubs. They were always full of loud, squawking people on about whatever nonsense was happening in their lives. That said, when Brianna mentioned the new chess club, the third year had to admit (not out loud, of course, but still) that it sounded... not awful. The day of the first meeting, she woke up early and got dressed. Her curls frizzed out after she brushed them, earning a sigh of frustration. After getting dressed, she stomped up to the club room.

So far the only people there were Brianna... and Kasamir. Csuri knew the younger boy didn't like her, but honestly, she couldn't be bothered. Everyone knew he was a pessimist too, but apparently "assuming a loss" was too much. What a butthead. Rolling silvery-grey eyes, Csuri walked in and leaned against the wall. They were in the middle of a match. Csuri was decent enough, but they were using weird technical names and she had no idea what they were doing. But they ended in a draw. So no winners. That was dumb. Ugh. Why was she even here? The blonde glanced sidelong at the door, already debating on leaving while the two were talking in hushed tones. Wouldn't be long before she was spotted.

Kasamir Aloysius Patrovna
SlytherinThird YearThirteen Years OldSingleChess Club Captain

As much as he wished he’d attended Durmstrang with the rest of his Wizarding friends, Kasamir was glad to be back at Hogwarts. In addition to being able to start his third year of playing Quidditch for his House (they didn’t let First Years even tryout, let alone fly for a match), he set up the Hogwarts Chess Association, something which gave him a feeling of real pride. Today, he was opening the club for its second year in existence, and he was looking forward to having a good turnout. As much changed as he’d seen over the summer, he was glad that he had some normalcy to look forward to.

Things at home changed for him, and he knew something was up when his Aunt Katya (he knew she went by ‘Kitty Quinlan’ these days, but it just didn’t feel right calling her ‘Tyotya Kitti’, especially now she was a fully vested Healer at St. Mungo’s) came to the station to collect him. No, he wouldn’t be summering in London this year, as his guardian, Aunt Faina earned a promotion, and now she was the Deputy-Chief Auror for the Ministry’s station in St. Petersburg. This meant she had a place in the old city, one large enough for both of them to live comfortably, and her position was one where the hazards of life as an Auror were experienced to a lesser degree than when she was younger, and she had a coterie of younger Aurors under her supervision.

Summer in St. Petersburg was more fun than being in London, as he could be with his cousins, and it was easier to meet up with old friends. In addition to working on improving his Quidditch skills, he was attending chess tournaments. At an international tournament in Moscova, he accrued sufficient points to earn the rank of Junior Chess Master, giving his position as Club Captain a measure of gravitas as he now had the certification to back him up.

His grandparents gifted him with a Moscow Watchdog they’d gotten from a magical breeder, whom he named ‘Medved’, which translated to ‘Bear’. Though he was a puppy, he was already a handful, figuratively and literally, and given the size of the paws he’d yet to grow into, he was likely to be quite large when he grew up. Medved was trained to take his commands in Russian, and he greatly resembled a St. Bernard puppy. Aunt Faina’s eyes widened at the sight of Medved when she met him, and Kasamir was glad that he would snuggle up with him at night.

After arranging to have notices posted in all the Common Rooms and other common areas of the school advertising the club’s opening, the young Chess Master arrived for the first meeting early enough to make sure all was in order in the club room. He set out a number of chess boards for anyone else who showed up. Kasamir prevailed upon the House Elves to cater his first meeting, and they produced a nice tray of cookies and brownies and a carafe of pumpkin juice. Once all was in readiness, he sat down at the enchanted Three-Dimensional Chess set he’d gotten over the summer, and started working out a chess problem while he waited for players to wander in.

Savino knew a thing or two about chess, so it made sense for him to join the chess club. It would keep him mentally prepped for the next game he’d play at home. The club usually got together two times a week. Tuesday and Thursday morning, due to the early nature, Savi made sure to get up early and make his way to the great hall. Eating breakfast promptly at seven in the morning before heading to the third floor. He wasn’t about to start the day without food.

Arriving at the third floor, Savi made his way to the vacant classroom where the club was scheduled to meet. Once there he noted Kasamir a boy in his house one year older than himself. He knew him more so from Quidditch than anywhere else. “Hey Kasamir,” He greeted his housemate as he entered the room. “What are you working on?” He asked casually as he made his way over to the chess set.

This morning was a return to Kasamir’s pride and joy: the Hogwarts Chess Association. Going into its third year of existence, he was pleased to learn he could keep the club running, and the club gained a fair amount of exposure as being part of the Club Carnivale last spring. It was his hope the results of the events he organized would equate to an expansion of the membership rolls.

He got to the club early, as Kasamir wanted to make sure all was in readiness for the club’s opening. For the opening he was dressed as he usually was for a chess match at a tournament, wearing a black suitcoat and tie, in recognition of the great Russian chess players of old, who dressed like gentlemen for events. Medved trotted along with him up to the classroom, as it wasn’t fair to keep him cooped up down in the catacombs of the castle all the time, and he didn’t take him to club meetings unless he was sure the adolescent Moscow Watchdog would be welcome.

The young chess master assembled a display of pictures from the international tournament he was involved in over the summer, where he was among the finalists, and copies of chess journals. He prevailed upon the House Elves for assistance, and they produced plates of snacks for the event, along with a carafe of iced pumpkin juice for the occasion. Kasamir had several chess boards set up, before sitting down with a chess journal, and waiting for folk to stroll in.

First up on her list was chess club, which meant interacting with Kasamir. She knew he wasn't particularly fond of her, especially since she hadn't chosen him as vice captain for quidditch, but maybe it wouldn't be horrible. Dressing in her usual pleated skirt and a slouchy sweater, Csuri zipped up her short boots and hurried to the room where chess club was held.

Oh great. It was just Kasamir here... Damn her and her need to be early everywhere. "Um... hey." Csuri offered a small, yet awkward wave toward the younger Slytherin, then sat at one of the furthest away chairs and hid behind a thick book of master-level chess strategies. She'd found it at a neat bookstore when on vacation over the summer, and she hoped that soon enough she'd be leveled up. There was a chess tournament near her house over winter break, but she was still debating on actually signing up. It would be cool, but it would also mean being around a lot of people on one of her few breaks...

Hesperia had been meaning to join the chess club since her first year, but it had slipped her mind, but this year, she had an extra reason to join the club. This year she was joining because it meant she got to spend more time with Kasamir who had formed the club. She did enjoy chess, particularly Wizard's Chess, even if she wasn't the greatest at it. It wasn't like she was ever going to become a master chess player, but the game was fun and the strategy behind it helped her mind exercise. With her to the club she was bringing the gift she had gotten for Kasamir while in Greece. It was a heavy box wrapped in green paper, which happened to not only be their House color, but also her favorite color as well. When she got to the room, she pushed open the door and entered. Csuri was already here, which made sense because she was always punctual, but also she had seen her leaving the dorm earlier. Hesperia waved to Csuri, who was nose deep in a book as usual. When she saw Kasamir though, the teen smiled widely. Her heart did that flutter thing it had been doing recently. She said, "Hey Kas, I brought you the gift I was telling you about." She set the heavy box down on a table and waited for him to open it. She had looked far and wide for a gift that would make him happy and she had settled for a hand carved Greek gods chess set, carved from olive wood and stained/sealed in lacquer. She'd even gotten his name carved into the side of it. It had cost her a lot, but she wanted to give him something he'd really remember.

                                                                Quote:

It came as little surprise to see Csuri arrive in the club room, as she was attending meetings since the club was founded. There were times he wondered if it was because Brianna would come with her, but now their old Captain was off to the pros, he was pleased to see her show up on her own. After returning her acknowledgement, he watched as she picked a spot away from where most members might be and tucked up into a book on master strategies. He was about to try his luck and engage Csuri in human interaction, at least on some level, when he was distracted.

Seeing Hes walk in caused the young man to stand a bit straighter, start breathing a little funny, and he could feel a smile spreading across his usually serious countenance. He’d never seen her at Chess Club previously, and he was glad to see her today. She also had the gift she’d mentioned to him previously with her, and she presented him with a large box. “This is beautiful, Hes, I love it. Can’t wait to play a game with it with you,” he said breathlessly, as he looked at the chess set and then at Hes.

I…um, brought a gift for you as well,” he said, a bit nervously, as he stepped over to where Medved was parked next to his schoolbag. “I’ve had it with me, and…I was looking for the best oppourtunity to give it to you,” he confessed, as he presented her with a box wrapped in a blue cloth and kept shut with a white silk ribbon. Pulling the ribbon would cause the cloth to fall open revealing the box beneath.

The box was plain white in colour, with embossed Cyrillic lettering embossed upon its top. Inside the box was a handmade patterned shawl from the Caucuses, along with a long white silk scarf. Those served as a nest for another smaller box, inside of which was a silver pendent depicting mountains on a long silver chain. With a sigh, he lamented, “Had I known, I would have given you the pendent to wear with your blue dress.”

She giggled, knowing he'd absolutely destroy her in the game since he was a grandmaster and she was... basically a novice. She liked the strategy, but she wasn't the best at it and often made beginner blunders. Then he said he had a gift for her as well and she smiled again. Unwrapping the box, she opened it curiously and saw the shawl first. "Oh my, it's pretty," she said, then noticed the scarf as well. The shawl had a pretty pattern on it and felt very warm and the scarf was a silky white that looked like fresh snow. As she was examining them, a small box fell out of the scarf and landed on the table. She gasped as the smaller box fell out, picking it up from the table. The teen opened the box and saw the pendant inside it. Kas said if he'd known about the dress she was going to wear for the ride back to school, he'd had given it to her then. She blushed deeply and said, "Oh, Kasamir, it's so pretty. I want to wear it now." She reached up and took off the star necklace she usually wore, then carefully wrapped it up to put in her pocket. She replaced it with the mountain pendant, then smiled at Kas. "How does it look?"

Kasamir Aloysius Patrovna
SlytherinFourth YearFourteen Years OldSingleChessmaster & Chess Club Captain

Kas smiled as he watched Hes open the package, he’d been saving it for the best time to give to her. He needed his Baba Patrovna to help him pick out a gift, as he wasn’t really sure, and he no longer had the people in his life whom he would otherwise have likely consulted first. Baba, of course, knew the perfect things for a young man to gift a young lady who he was serious about. There was a fresh tingling sensation when she saw the pretty shawl, and he knew he wanted to see her wear it when the cold winter winds started rushing down from the mountains.

The light in her warm eyes caused his heart to race, and when the smaller box tumbled out onto the table, he watched with fascination as he opened it and revealed the pendant therein. When she blushed, he felt a rise of warmth in his own face, and when she said she wanted to try it on there and then, he was afraid he’d open his mouth and have something utterly stupid come pouring out to ruin the moment. Instead, he focused his attention upon Hes as she arranged the chain and closed the clasp, so the pendant hung freely. Asking him how she looked, he held out his hands so he might take hers, and said simply, “Beautiful.”

It was time for chess club, yet again. And despite not being very good at the game, Dad had encouraged him to stick with it and get better, rather than just leave and stick to the other clubs he was in. Astronomy Club... he was really only there because he loved the photography of the sky, but he wasn't usually allowed to take the pictures during class. And news, well.... he could take all the pictures he could ever want! But apparently it was something seen as more normal to also have clubs outside one's special interests... so, for now, he would continue.

Walking into the room, he noticed Kasamir and Hesperia being romantic and such, and Csuri hiding behind a book. Oh great. Eddie wasn't sure if he was supposed to interrupt the conversation, or maybe just go sit at one of the chess boards. He wasn't good enough at chess to play against himself as he occasionally saw the others do, but he also wasn't confident enough to break conversation. For now, he opted to just sit in one of the chairs, looking at the pieces.... y'know, he could get some really neat pictures in this lighting...
