There's nothing worse than a flashback of ones pain. Sadness, anger, grief... that and much more returns as if the very thing one remembers was happening at that moment. It's unescapable and can not be ignored because it's embedded in one's memories and into one's very core of there existance. Good or bad, it is what makes one what it is today. How foolish of I to think that I could easily throw away and forget. My flashbacks came to me viciously through my subconcious for a while now. When I close my eyes to put myself to rest, the images of my past are shown vividly on my eyelids.
It had been only a day in a half since I was found half dead by a girl named Mami. He was dressed in rags that covered her small body. Her hands, as well as other parts of her body, were flithy from apparent labor through out the village. From the point of my recovery, she stayed at my side as I came to realize something starting. The ran down area was a slave village. This I learned during the afternoon the day after my awakening.
The arid heat took no justice to those it sufficated. Mami was showing me around the village; doing so gave me more of an unexpected reaction. The expressions on the peasants faces where startled in fear as the took notice of me. I would often turn to Mami to find a smile drawn on her face and just as cheerful, despite the terrifing tension that arose every step I had taken. Suddenly, there was a voice that broke through the suspense of fear out to us. "Mami! Come here quickly." A woman ran out into the dirt road and lefted Mami off the ground. Before I had any time to react to this, I felt a firm grip around my wrist and then my body was pulled foward. As I tried to run to keep up, I was being pulled by the woman, we fled into a old wooden house and she spoke to us again. There was fright in her voice, I could remember clearly the cracking in her voice and shortness of air as she forced us to retreat. "Listen to me, the master is coming. Mami, take your friend and hide quickly. Do no leave this house intil tonight."
With those words in mind, Mami and I fled into the back room and into the closet. I don't remember how she got the force, but Mami pushed me in a corner and placed her head on my shoulders. Though I couldn't hear her doing so, it was obvious that she lost her happy-go-lucky behavior and was crying. "What's going on? Who's this master?" I whispered to her trying not to speak loadly. I knew better than to speak normalling when I was told to hide. In reply, she wispered only a few words."I'm scared Rei. Mommy said that you'll protect me. I don't want to be taken away."
Meanwhile, outside I could hear faint voices, but one stood out. I could never forget the that load, obnoxious voice that seemed to sneer every time the person had spoken. "I'm looking for a child. A young girl about ten years old. Tell me where I can find her and I will award the person their freedom." Silence seemed to reek unnervingly outside but then thunderous knocks at the wooden door echoed into the back room. With each knock, Mami grasp on my shirt began to tighten. I felt that there was nothing I could do, no.. there wasn't any thing I could do. Then I heard the screams of the woman that told use to hide. "That's not true! I've been here alone all day. There no body-" A thud to the ground had followed a loud slap as the woman had cease to speak. Again the sneering voice was heard once again. "Wretched infedel. You there, make sure she doesn't make a move. And you, search this flithy place. I have a meeting with the Count." And in unison, two others that came with the man replied. "Yes sir!"
My heart raced and fear began to envelope me as well. Mami only added more tension to my own tembles as she buried her head into my shoulder, just about ready to bawl out into tears. "No... I don't wanna go. Mommy, Rei, please help me." The steps on the old wooden floor grew louder as some one had entered into the room. Only moments later, the closet door was yanked from it's hinges and a hand reached down and pulled Mami away from me. I watched in shock helplessly as she struggled desperately. "Nooo lemme go!" "Let her go!" The screams were unbareble for me to take. I found myself rushing up from the darkness of the closet and charging into the the one that was holding Mami. But I failed. His foot rose and I ran straight into it. I fell out to the floor and my body began to shut down on me. I heard Mami scream out to me, but she was silenced as well. My vision blurred and I was only half concious, but enough to hear what happen afterward.
"Sir, I found the girl and another child here as well." "Another child? Good. Toss them into the hole until the Count arrives." "Sir, what about this woman?" "Kill the b***h. She is of no use to us."
A gunshot rang into my ear. Sortly after, something else was heard. The peasant that gave away our hiding spot had appearently approached us. "Ah... Let me guess. You want your freedom now, eh. I will keep my promise and keep my word. I hearby grant you freedom." No sooner after thoses words were spoken, another gunshot echoed into my ears again. This time, loud enough where I had completely fell unconcious.
