this is just the beginning for the Quest for Immortality... well actually, it's the Abstract for our thesis (my groups mates and i have worked on this for 2 semesters smile ) for every thesis proposals there should be the abstract. in books it's probably like the prologue...
ABSTRACT In the research of how effective folk media could be in the transfer of ones culture from one generation to another, the researchers formulated the research study, ?QUEST FOR IMMORTALITY: A Case Study on the Effectivity of Folk Media in the Transfer of Ba-diw, Madmad and Mummification Burial Practices of the Ibaloi Ethnolinguistic Group in Kabayan, Benguet? to unfurl the raison d’être of some of these practices? intransience and to others? extermination. The researchers started the study on how people from all over the world to the Filipinos? ways in particular, on how they give importance to their dead. It is widely known that the Philippines has a numerous ethnic groups in its territory and one of which, is the Ibaloi Ethnolinguistic group which the researchers found interesting to focus on. Due to the Ibaloi?s remarkable culture, the researchers dealt with the effectivity of the oral tradition of the Ibaloi group that have helped them maintain one of its precious custom, mummification, which have helped it reach the knowledge of the generation next to their ancestors who have started such indigenism even upto the present. In accordance with this practice, some rituals done prior to it specifically Ba-diw and Madmad were left untouched. Though already extinct, Mummification remained in the hearts and minds of some of the natives until the modern era because of the stories told by the elders to their daughters, sons, and grandchildren. This has justified the effectivity of folk media, though the researchers find one that is the unintended alteration of the process due to its transfer from one generation to another. Spaniards have caused some changes among the natives? culture. With the absence of mummification, Christianity was then introduced that has left the ethnic practices as paganism. Colonization period indeed has left the Filipino people with so many innovations. To explain further the goal of this study, the researchers included a Communication Theory from Gerbner, which gives substantial information on the process of oral communication. It also elaborated further the communication perse and the effects and feedbacks that a certain stimulus has brought about. This gave more light on how oral communication worked with the transfer of these given burial practices. On the other hand, Fernandez?s concept on folk media have helped the researchers to be aware of the cycle of this tradition that repeatedly takes place among Ibaloi natives, which will also help the researchers relate on what the study is all about. To support the researchers with more substantial information regarding these burial practices and how these customs have been transferred from one generation to another, the researchers conducted an interview with the natives during their data gathering. This way, the researchers have not only heard the stories regarding their customs but also had the chance to visit where these burial practices took place and personally interacted with the very people involved in its history, which books could never give color to, than the place and people captured by the researchers' own eyes.
