Chapter 1: Dawning Day Dawn broke through the darkness of Aslan on a Saturday morning. The birds twittered, the breeze blew gently and the people slowly awoke for their daily routines. One individual in specific seemed to love the day. A young girl named Freya about to perform her duties to Katina, the goddess.
Freya walked down the road of Aslan silently by herself. She dodged carts, traders and children. When the white marble of the temple appeared, she broke into a run. Her white gown and veil fluttered in the breeze but nearing the temple she slowed. Many people nodded towards her. Freya was a Katira, She tended the sacred temple of Katina. She was one of the goddess’s daughters and was a respected one. Today the royal family was coming and she was to help them with whatever they needed. Freya walked inside the dim temple. Only the sacred flame glowed. The flame had been the gift from Katina herself.
Freya went to the flame with a small cloth of bark. She delicately set the oak bark in place. Everything had to be right for the family’s arrival food, praying and rituals. The heir was to be blessed that day and Freya’s job was to be in charge of the ceremony. After tending the flame, Freya went to the statue.
The statue was of Katina standing with a piece of cherry tree twig in hand. Freya knelt on her knees and prayed “Great Goddess Katina, I, Freya your most loyal Katira ask that you bless the land of Aslan, bring joy to the people and give the king the child he wishes.” She said. Freya was about to place down her stone but stopped. She spoke softly “If this is selfish? Forgive me Goddess but I wish for love and for myself to have a daughter. Even if it is against law of you.” She said. Then got up and placed a rose and stone.
With a quick laugh the temple brightened in the mid morning sun. Slowly within the hour other Katira’s arrived. Freya counted that there were 14 for the day to begin with for the day. Freya went to work preparing. It would be an hour before the Family would arrive. Freya busily set to work cleaning the chapel without complaint The other Katira’s followed by doing their own assigned duties.
After several long hard chores Freya was ready. Horse’s cantering filled the air of outside the temple. The royals were here for praying. Freya stood outside near the stone pillars. The king mounted off his horse with a smile of joy, Queen Gillian took a hand of a knight and the young prince followed his father. He turned his eyes to Freya as the family stopped in front of her. Freya looked into his deep brown eyes and him, into her green eyes. She then came back to reality “Sorry you majesties, Follow me please “ She said. They entered the temple in a line.Freya nervously walked to the statue of Katina. The king nodded to her “Shall we begin?” He asked. Freya nodded feeling faint and small. Taking a small tub of water with, jasmine petals, she relaxed.
Freya set the bowl in front of the king as he knelt before Katina. She smiled “ Now you must wash you hands and eat some holy bread before praying.” And Freya went to get the things for blessing. Freya took the Pearl ring and Katina’s charm.
When she returned, the King and his family were eating the bread that she had laid out along with the bowl of water. They sat happily eating the bread. The prince glanced at Freya and she blushed. After the small but normal routine Freya was to bless the Prince in the eyes of Katina. The boy stood before Freya with his eyes down to the floor while kneeling . Freya lifted the symbol of Katina out of the pool and held it high. She walked down the isle of the temples blessing area. She walked as other Katiras danced around him while spreading white rose petals. She stopped in front of the prince.
With a magical look she looked to the sky “White Rose of Winter! Please allow this boy to become a man.Allow him to rule peacefully like his fathers before him.” Freya called. The gem chain glowed at Katina blessing and Freya placed the chain around the prince’s neck. He looked dazed and then came back to reality. The family laughed and cheered at the sons ceremony performance. The family left Freya standing but the prince glanced back.
Chapter 2: A Nightmare come True
Freya stood on the temple steps the next day in the afternoon. She had been sweeping for an hour or so. The sun was gleaming higher for no reason. It seemed something strange was going to happen at that time of day. Then a royal carriage came up to the temple. The prince with his escort walked out of it. Freya blinked at them “What are they doing?” She thought to herself. The escort came up and bowed “Freya of the temple, the king wishes for you to be his mistress” He said. The broom dropped from Freya’s hand to the ground. Was this the truth or imaginative, childish dream? Freya stood stone still staring at the face of the young king. He seemed pleased with himself but his gaze avoided hers. This had happened so fast. Only yesterday she had been serving him and now, even though she knew there had been something, he had asked her to be forever his.
Freya smiled sweetly but felt her heart screeched in worry. She was unsure of what to do because if she left without Katina’s blessing all would be lost but if she disobeyed the prince. What would happen? With a sigh Freya took the escorts hand and he gave her hand to the prince. They walked down the steps of Freya at his side. She looked back at her beloved temple smiling at the other Katira’s
The carriage had no one else inside besides the prince and Freya. The escort was also a driver and sat in his normal seat. They drove swiftly without a word even but Freya wanted to talk. She was sweatier then a pig on slaughter day and as nervous as a hen. Finally the prince broke the silence “Sorry to shock you but when I looked at you I felt something.” He said. The prince looked like a normal person and not a royal when he said this and that made Freya soften. She looked at his eyes “You shocked me and the feelings are the same, my prince but why me? Many Katira and women would fall for you.” Freya asked.
The prince stared at the floor silently and then looked at Freya’s eyes “Your face and your movement. I looked at your sad face and how beautiful it looked. Your eyes are forest green with a playful tint and your lips were small. They seemed to shimmer as you talk. Your movements quick but graceful. It was just you. Nothing but you. No noblewomen, duchess or Katira could compare to you.” The prince was red all over his face.
Freya had never seen anyone look so in love “Instantly for me as well.” She said. He relaxed slightly and they kept talking till they reached the palace. The prince stared out at the palace with a grimace on his face “Ugh, Their here.” He said. Freya was confused. Who was here and why did her prince look so upset? Prince Alaric got out of the carriage and offered his hand to Freya. She took it and walked out lifting her gown slightly so she wouldn’t trip. Freya followed the prince who was still holding her hand.
He walked to 3 boys that all seemed to be the same age. One was short with mud, brown hair and deep soulless amber eyes. His skin was pale and he wore a page outfit that seemed too loose on him. He seemed to be quiet but clever. The second brother was a bit taller with grey eyes, silver hair and normal colored skin. He seemed cold hearted and evil just by his look. His outfit was comfortable around him. The eldest looking had jet black hair a dark, evil eyes and a smirk to match. His clothing fit too perfectly around him. He looked exactly like a bad boy.
Freya stopped in her tracks gasping for air. Something was foul about those boys. Suddenly Freya was on the ground suffocating with shadows surrounding her. Then a faint, gold light surrounded her. It was Katina’s power of protection. Freya’s sight became clear again
