Nate stared at the ceiling of his room for a long time after she had broken the connection before her shower. He could still sense her moods and right now she was feeling like she was falling in love. He turned on his side and continued to stare, but at his wall now.
His mind was racing on how he could still win her over. He just needed to talk to her more, but if he interrupted her, she might get mad at him. After all, he was the one who had gotten her into this mess. On the other hand, she did feel like she belonged here.
More than you know, Winry.
Just thinking her name brought a lopsided grin to his face. It had been so long... It was pure luck that she had hit him with her car. All of the pieces were coming together and Nate could see the beginnings of the picture.

We walked back to the castle after the sun fully rose. Actually we waited a little longer than that, but it was close enough.
I was starting to get weary of the relationship we shared. There was just too much shoved into a short amount of time. It would be enough to make any girl weary. Now this will sound cliche or cheesy, but hear me out: My heart wanted me to keep with the pace that we were setting, it felt as if we were old friends, well more than that, playing catch-up after a long time apart from each other. As if we were making up for lost time.
But my head was screaming for me to slow down and take everything in. Like I said before, it was too much crammed into, what, three or four days? I was starting to lose count. I felt that Cian was in the same dilemma as I was. He was forcing himself to take it slow even though he just wanted to be where we were before we were separated, figuratively speaking.
It was beginning to get awkward between us and neither of us wanted that to happen, but we didn’t know what to do otherwise.
Our thoughts were shattered as the castle came into view and I stopped in my tracks. I knew it had been big, but holy sh*t...
It looked as if it took up twenty acres of land, and that was just the floor plan. There had to be at least fifteen floors to the palace as well. Cian stopped next to me and looked at the castle, amused.
“Yes it is quite big, isn’t it?”
I looked at him with the best “duh” expression I could muster. He laughed and slid his arm around my waist, walking me back to the main hall of the palace.
I hadn’t gotten any word from Nate yet on the reminiscent feeling I had. Even thought he had been a smart-a** to me, the guy didn’t hurt me...a lot.
Cian led me to the dining hall that I had forgotten was there. I stopped again and he looked back at me.
“Again?” He had fake exasperation in his tone. I looked at him and narrowed my eyes playfully, sticking my tongue out and squealing when he chased after me. His smile was on his face until a teenager walked into the room.
“Uh...sir?” Cian stopped in his tracks and looked at the guy for a moment before nodding at him.
“Go ahead.”
The boy looked at me with a little confusion evident on his face.
“She’s okay.” Cian’s voice rang out and re-caught the teenager’s attention.
Another pang of guilt filled me as Cian winked at me.
I am so going to hell for this...
“Well, sir, the vampires have started to move in on the western territory and we need your go-ahead to clean out the,” he glanced at me again, “‘infection.’”
There was a slight pause and I tried to tune this out. Hey, if I didn’t hear it, then I didn’t know any plans. Therefore, I didn’t have to betray Cian to Nate. Wow, I’m good.
But sadly that didn’t work because I saw Cian give a curt nod. Great. Now I had to tell Nate. Remember, he could kill me and my family if I didn’t cooperate. And I wasn’t so cold-hearted that I would let him kill my no good, goddamn– well, you get the picture. There had to be a way around this.
Just as I was thinking of a solution that had to do with a toothpick and a pencil sharpener, the maids came bustling in with food and set it on the table. Ava came bouncing in and flung herself into a chair, pulling a mountain of mashed potatoes towards herself. I sat to the left of the head of the table, Ava sat across from me, and Cian took the head of the table between us.
“So do I get to go to the Western Territory?” she asked through a mouthful of rolls.
Cian rolled his eyes. “Only if you behave yourself. Remember last time...”
“But it only took out a city block!” I choked on some green bean casserole, which I love by the way, and hit my chest with my hand.
“What do you mean a city block?”
Cian sighed heavily and glared at Ava as he explained. “Miss Smart One over here, thought that the best and most efficient way to get rid of an infestation of vamps was to bomb the place. Someone was stupid enough to let her," he jabbed his thumb at Ava, which she bit at, “set up the explosives. Long story, short: She took out a block. Luckily no civilians were hurt, but it got a few of them shaken up. Literally.”
“But it was so pretty...” her voice trailed off.
Okay, rule numero uno: Don’t let Ava play with matches. Got it.
We finished eating and Cian and Ava excused themselves to get ready for the fight. I laid on my bed, staring at the ceiling, in thought. What should I do? I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Soon I fell asleep, hoping to God that my dreams would hold the answer.
A sharp pain awoke me the next morning. I sat up slowly and held my head.
Oh, boy. Who spiked the gravy?
No one...
Why hello, Nate. Nice of you to get back to me so quic–
DON’T ACT INNOCENT!
I flinched at the force of the thought and found that the sharp pain was coming from the place where he had pricked me with his fangs.
Oh sh*t.
We were attacked tonight and your lover showed up.
I bristled at the word lover. Nice of him to assume things.
You knew he was leaving, but you decided not to warn me, didn’t you?
I sat there on my bed frozen. What could I say? I couldn’t lie. He would look into my thoughts. I was up sh*t creek without a scrub brush. I just made that up....
All of the sudden, a lightheaded feeling came over me and he next thing I knew I was sitting across from Nate, back in the parlor. My bite mark burned now. I tried to ignore it, to keep the pain off of my face. It failed when a gut wrenching pain erupted in my head. I slammed my hands onto the table along with my head.
The pain jolted me out of the connection with Nate, but it left me with a huge headache. I had to fight this.
Nate looked at me with surprise.
“Why did you–”
“Because I don’t want your dirty presence in my mind,” I spat out.
Again, surprise. Then he laughed. And then all hell broke loose.
The whole building shook from an explosion downstairs.
“s**t. We’ll continue this later.” And with that I found myself back on my bed. But not before I heard someone yell, “Damnnit! Who put Ava in charge of ballistics again?!”
