Puppy Mills: and why they need to be stopped NOW |

Hi everyone, my name is Marchie, and if you’re a common face, then you know i usually write about fantasy stuff about my characters. Well, today I’m not writing fiction, but facts, and i hope you will still read and listen to what i have to say. Most of my information comes from what i saw on Oprah.
I just watched Oprah (don’t laugh, cause you probably watch it in secret) and today's program was about the puppy mills. Sure you've heard of them before, there were baby puppies come from. But maybe you have or haven’t heard about this: Puppy Mills aren’t just places where puppies are born. They're places where dogs are used as "cash crops" to put it in the words from the program. I’m sure that’s not what first comes to mind when you think of a dog. To you, and most people; dogs are canine companions, family, man's best friend. But at the puppy mills, they’re not considered anything more than a product to be sold. The conditions these dogs live in is horrifying; to say the least. They keep dogs in cages that, in some cases, are too small for them to stand up or turn around. There is no protection for them from the elements; they stay in their cages outside in the blistering heat and the freezing cold. When a dog is injured, they don’t take him to the vet. When a dog is diseased, or sick; they don’t care to nurse him to health. When the dog is old, weak, or is no longer fertile, the breeders shoot him down. Most of these dogs, if not all, are in cages all their lives, standing on wire, never learning how to walk, their chained collars that dig into their necks, making wounds, and then the skin grows over the chains, fusing them to the dogs. The breeders force females to mate every time they're in heat; this causes females a lot of problems, their nipples start to stretch down to their feet, and can become infected. After watching the program, I was enraged, and in tears. What I saw of those mills, dogs that could easily be my basset Abby, are going "cage crazy" in their tiny prisons, and will forced to live that way for the rest of their lives. Now, to all the dog owners reading this, stop a moment and look at your dog, he or she might be sleeping at your feet, or on the floor, or in a dog bed or couch. Now imagine them, your sweet dog that you love with all your heart; in a cage too small for them, diseased and dirty, smelling of feces and urine. Now imagine them outside, bugs flying around them, the burning sun or the frosty snow, battering away at them. Now surround them with hundreds of other dogs of different breeds, all looking the exact same way, a few with their hair falling out and some females with tired faces and nipples that are black and swollen, hitting the floor of their wired cages. These dogs all barking at once, their paws on the cages, scratching at the walls to try and get out. This is what a puppy mill looks like. It's dog's hell on earth. And the worst part: all of this is perfectly Legal Sorry if that was harsh, but it's the truth, and you can see for yourselves at this site puppymills.com/what_you_can_do.html when you go here, click on the 'Inside a Puppy Mill" link and watch the video. There’s also information beyond what i have told you there.
Now let me just state this: Not all breeders are this bad. There are few, but there are breeders who are responsible to their dogs, and they’re the ones you want to get your dogs from. Also, if you were angered by the Puppy mills thing going on, there is a way you can help. There are some attempts to bring about a law that will cease this cruel treatment. The link above will also help you find your legislature representatives in your state, if you’re an American citizen, and you can press for change from there. Want one surefire way to help stop puppy mills? DO NOT BUY A PUPPY AT THE PET STORE! Where do you think they came from? PUPPY MILLS! The puppies may seem cute and clean, but they have mental scars from being in puppy mills from the day they were born. You'll be better off finding a dog at a shelter, or rescue. I know it doesn’t sound attractive, but it's more convenient as well. Your can call up any rescue or shelter and find the exact breed age and size of the dog you want. And it will shut down puppy mills at the same time! If no one is buying their puppies, then they won’t have any reason to keep breeding their dogs. So if you really want to give puppy mill breeders a painful bite on the butt, then don’t get your puppies from pet stores. My mission is to get the word out about what’s going on at puppy mills, then once the word is out, to shut them down for good. If this passage has affected you, and has changed the way you see puppy mills, leave a comment.

Your effort can change the lives of dogs in puppy mills across America. So let this be your mission as a dog lover, and as a person who knows they deserve better. I will also be posting this in various places, so this will hopefully, not be the last time you see this message, but be the beginning of change. I thank you for your time and listening. Your dog will thank you, and so will they:
