"Don't hide from the world, face it with a hidden smile."
Ashley played with the white orb inside her jacket pocket.
The thing wasn't that big. As a matter of fact, it was only about the size of a large marble, and it was enough for Ashley to twiddle with it with her fingers.
Vladimir's exact words echoed in her mind: "You must find the other three that must join you on your quest."
"But... what about my mom?"
"As of the current moment, your mother is far beyond your reach. Go to school tomorrow, my child. It is there, where you will find the ones who share your fate."
Ashley still couldn't believe that Vladimir -playful, wacky, and unpredictable Vladdi- wasn't human. He seemed human to her. But he had to transform into the ugly, 84 year old, white-haired, ogre he really was to convince the brown-haired girl of her destiny.
And yet, I still don't believe it, Ashley thought sourly, making a face for the world to stare at.
The girl known as Ashley Smith made her way into her school -Clear Waters High School- with even strides, trying to look like she wasn't hiding anything. Even though orbs weren't too big of a deal at schools, Ashley was pretty sure at least one of the students at Clear Waters would want her orb. She couldn't trust anyone.
Trisha walked up to her, a smile on her face as usual. "Hey, Ashley! What's with the weird walk?"
Damn. Found out already. "Nothing. I just felt like walking weird. Got a problem with that?"
"No. But, okay. My best friend is a weirdo," Trisha, Trish, teased, poking her with one of her long fingers.
Ashley chuckled. "Haha. Very funny." Ashley removed her hands from her pockets. "Anyways, what's up?"
"Nothing. Hey, what do you have in your pocket?" Trish asked, nodding her head towards Ashley's right hand pocket. Ashley resisted the urge to narrow her eyes. She was wearing a really thick jacket since was cold in the morning. How could Trish have known there was something there?
Trish, noticing her tenseness, held both hands up in defense. "Woah, no need to get defensive. I saw your hand playing with something on your way in, so I was just wondering."
Ashley relaxed her tense shoulders. She hadn't even felt them tighten.
"So, what do you have in there?"
Right as her body began to tighten, the bell rang. Trish looked up from Ashley to the bells, and sighed. "Well, later. You better tell me at snack!" And Trish was off.
Snack was in three hours. Ashley inwardly shivered. She wanted to tell her closest friend everything. But she knew it would be best if she kept quiet.
She had to find an excuse to stay in at snack.
"Hey, Ashley!"
Said girl looked up, and smiled. "Hey, Ryan. What's up?"
"Nothing much, besides the ceiling. You?"
"The same," she nodded, and grinned.
Ryan was a nice guy. He was trustworthy, smart, and he could run. (Ashley loved to run, so of course the guy she liked had to run too.) That, and Ryan was pretty handsome: decently tall, wore glasses that broke on occasion, and he had the clearest eyes. Easy to find out what he was thinking. The two had known each other since freshmen year, and now that they were juniors, her feelings for him had grown. And apparently he had grown too, since he was a lot shorter than she was three years ago.
Ryan coughed, bringing Ashley out of her reverie. "So, Ashley, what are you doing this Satur-"
The bell rang throughout the room, stopping Ryan.
"All right class, the bell has rung!"
Ryan faced her again, and smiled. "Talk to you later, all right? Snack okay?"
The color of Ashley's blush increased profusely. But she inwardly sighed in relief; she had an excuse to stay away from Trish at snack. Though Ryan wasn't the best excuse (Trish teased her all the time about him), but it was an understandable one.
The next two periods were filled with anxious energy, and the fingering of her orb.
