Earth News: It's hard to look for a job when your stomach is rumbling. Walter Thomas started skipping meals when his savings were running out and his cabinets were almost empty. He didn't want to turn to food stamps, but eventually applied for aid. With the economy in meltdown, Thomas is not alone. In October, more than one in 10 people -- about 31 million -- were using food stamps, according to the government.
