"Ergh!"
"Ah, another failure..." he mumbled, closing the door.
Kyoumi looked at the door with her paws awkwardly folded in front of her, her hind legs sprawled on either side of her. She made a sour face before panning her head towards her behind.
Everyone was sleeping; well, all the females were. The white-blue floor looked like a sea of fur, except for the hold in the walls for the bigger cats. They had dens to sleep in. But the sea and dens looked comforting and warm. It looked very welcoming too, since the lab was incredibly cold.
She maunuvered her way through, dodging the sleeping - apparently all female - cats. Her green eyes glanced at the dens with a suspicious look. Why the hell would they placed an ocean of females with exactly six dens, in which were filled with one male each?
Kyoumi shook her head, and found an open spot in the center. Curling in a small ball, the female dove into sleep.
"Hey... wake up."
"...huh?"
In front of Kyoumi was another female cat, but a Persian one, not a Tabby. The cat was staring intently at her when she spoke quietly, "You're new here, and no one is willing to help, so I'll tell you."
"But if no one is willing to help, why are you?"
The question seemed to hit a nerve. Flinching slightly, she said, "...because I have no chance here. The least I can do is help you." Kyoumi wasn't satisfied, but shut her mouth, and listened.
"First of all, do you know why you're here?" She shook her head. "Of course, you don't. They never tell anymore." Kyoumi leaned in expectantly.
"You see, there are only six males in a room with hundreds of females... and there are about ten of these rooms apparently."
"Yeah, so?" Kyoumio asked, "Females are more common than males because males always turn into big cats, and half of them die at genetic injection at birth."
"Exactly. And since females always turn into house cats, and since almost 100% live, the scientist need to get rid of some. And thus... they assign us rooms."
"...and?"
"And they place six males in each, and place about 150 female cats inside that would guarantee each male a healthy litter."
After thinking, Kyoumi said, "So basically they're playing matchmaker for us so that they can get more experiments."
"Exactly," she said, "My name is Toko Toko, by the way. Call me Toko."
"Okay, Toko, why don't we just NOT choose a mate? I mean, it's easy, right-"
"No," Toko said, "you should know by now that males are almost driven by instinct to find that one cat as soon as she comes along. Scent is almost God to us. These guys are no exception." Her hazel eyes scanned the room's dens.
"... so when do they choose?"
"They wake up only for about four hours a day, at around noon for lunch, and at three for an early dinner. Anywhere between there."
"Then why is he awake?" Kyoumi pointed to the second to the last den. Inside, large yellow eyes dug into the mass of females. Toko almost gasped out loud. She shoved her paw down.
"Don't ever point at him!" Toko hissed. She sitffened when she felt his gaze pass over the two. She lowered her voice to the point Kyoumi couldn't hear unless she was less than an inch away from her mouth. "His name is Raibu. He's a tiger." Kyoumi sat still, as if waiting for more. "And he only sleeps at night, never in broad daylight."
Kyoumi looked at her strange. "So? Tigers are common. Why are so scared?"
Toko bit her tongue, and mumbled something incoherent.
"Why?"
"Because he's been here for over a year."
"Is that a long time?"
Toko nodded. "WAY too long. Most are in and out within a week!" She looked at him from over her shoulder. "But he... hasn't even picked out a single candidate! And there's no way that he doesn't have a drive to-"
"Toko."
"Huh?" This time, Kyoumi whispered something unsensible. "What?"
"Raibu is..." more nonsense.
"Repeat that?"
"He's looking at me! And now he's coming this way!"
Toko froze, and thought, Raibu is coming...? She looked at Kyoumi. For a Tabby like her?
Suddenly, a soft, but low growl was heard. "Please move." Toko stayed frozen, but her head moved to see a pair of very large yellow eyes. Raibu.
"Raibu-san..."
"I said, please move," he repeated, a bit more impatiently this time. And this time, Toko moved away from his path to Kyoumi. As she looked up at him, he said, "Your name."
"K-K-Kyoumi."
"Kyoumi..." he said slowly, reaffirming her name. Slowly, but surely, he swooped down, and gently bit the skin between her should blades.
"Kyaa!" She struggled slightly. "Let me go!"
The females made an opening for the two, and as they enetered his den, the cloth that usually kept the light coming in at day swung closed.
