"Hey."
She turned. "Hey."
"What are you doing out here? Fredrick told me you came outside."
"Curse you, Fredrick, curse you!" Mimi swore under her breath. Thomas continued to stare - patiently, longingly, and lovingly - at her. When she realized he wasn't going to stop without an answer, she sighed. "I just needed some air, that's all, my Prince." Her eyes saw his hands curl into fists.
"Mimi, you know I hate that name. Call me what you always do," he said, "Tanner."
Mimi stared at this time, and smiled. "Oh, all right, my Pri- I mean, Tanner."
Tanner frowned, taking a step closer to the lightly colored brunette. She took a step back from the masked boy. He took another step, and she mirrored his actions backwards. His frown deep deeper, and he asked quietly, "Did I change or something?" When she gave him a look, and responded with a, "huh?" he added, "Did I change from the last time you saw me?"
"No... why?" “Because you’re not acting like you usually do.”
“What? Yes I am!” She looked away.
“No you’re not,” Thomas snapped.
“Tanner, I’m acting like I usually do-!”
Suddenly, strong hands surrounded her face, and forced large reddish-brown eyes to face him. It didn’t hurt when he turned her head, albeit the look in her eyes made it seem like he hit her with a sledgehammer. He then removed his mask. “Then look me in the eye.”
His eyes were a pretty honey-yellow color, Mimi mused. Beautifully highlighted with browns, and golds, and small amounts of orange, the stars reflected themselves in the gloss of those eyes. His pupils were practically invisible, they were so small. Long black lashes, matching his hair, framed these gorgeous things. And the feeling conveyed in these eyes were so strong, and so raw, that no matter how hard she tried to tear away from his gentle grip, she couldn’t look away from him. “T-Tanner…”
“Mimi, I’m no different from when I have glasses on, to when I have my mask on,” he began backing her up towards the end of the balcony. “I’m still the same, ol’ Tanner.”
Looking down. Mimi nodded. “I know you are. But it’s not you, really! It’s just… look at this place, Tanner!” She looked up from where they were, the secret balcony attached to the ball room, and let her gaze linger on the grand stone castle. Tanner’s eyes followed hers unwillingly. The castle had been carved out of a mountain by thousands of people, thousands of years ago. It was a bit gloomy on the outside but it was really nice inside. But the way it loomed over the land gave it the most intimidating feeling. Tanner had been raised here, so he had no problem with it, but when he looked at it through her eyes, he thought that, yeah, this place is pretty harsh on the eyes. “It’s beautiful, and it’s grand, and it’s just… not meant for a country girl like me. I belong down there; where there are oak trees, and apple groves, and clear starry nights, and the sound of that annoying banjo, and fresh soil, and chickens, and well,” Mimi led her hand towards the town below, its lights shining, “where my family is. I’m not meant for this castle, no matter how much I just want to be here - with you!
“Sure, I do want to be here. I want to be able to know what it’s like in this place like you know what my life is like down there. But you know how I am. I already know I wouldn’t be able to stay here, no matter how much I love you.
“You know what I’m saying, right? I’m not just rambling, am I?”
Tanner continued to look down at the town for a moment before looking back at her. “I understand. But that won’t stop me from trying.”
“Tanner-”
“I can give you anything you want. You want a ruby the size of your eye? I’ll have it shipped in from the mines of Lergzion.”
“Huh? A ruby? I-”
“If you wanted a diamond for your ring, I would personally bring you the world’s supply for you to choose from.”
“Tanner, you know I don’t like diamonds or rubies! Hell, I don‘t even like metal-”
“Damn it, Mimi, if you wanted a mountain range, I would have a thousand men build you a castle like this one in front of one just so you could view it. I would make sure that you would have the best view over the entire population of this country, and that no one else would be able to view but you.” At this, Mimi could argue no more. He remembered her birthday wish. When Mimi fell silent, Tanner was slightly out of breath, and he was beginning to blush. “If you wanted, Mimi, I will conquer the world for you.”
“Tanner…” her whisper said, “You idiot.” Taking one large step, she rammed her forehead into his collarbone, and said again, “You idiot.” The boy, almost a man, took his hand, and ran it through her hair. “Are you really serious? The world? Tanner, you couldn‘t even win a game of goldfish against me! How do you expect to win a war?”
“Hey, I let you win. If we went at it now, I would totally kick your little butt!”
“Don’t make fun of my butt!” Mimi backed up, and covered her behind with both hands. “Just because you’re jealous…”
And at that, the royal burst out into laughter. Surprised, but relieved of the previous tension, she began to laugh as well.
-
Thomas Dawn was the prince of the Dawn Kingdom: one of the most powerful countries of their time. And for the past hundred years, this kingdom has had a series of mysterious princes or princesses. Their entire life, they would wear a mask in front of visitors or in public. By the time they turned eleven, they would suddenly acquire a job in another county other than the one that their home was in. There, they would change their name, remove their mask, and blend in with everyone else.
Now his home, Dawn Castle, was in the center of the country, and also of the county of Skiridge, and the town of Madien. Now the town of Madien knew they would never receive the prince or princess of Dawn Castle. They were never chosen because it would be too easy to figure out the royal child was in their town. But out of a stroke of luck, they were chosen by the current heir of the throne, Thomas. But the county that is chosen is never notified, and thus Thomas was free to be anyone he wanted in the town of Madien.
The purpose of these, “jobs,” was for the heir of the throne to learn about the common life of a commoner. And so far, it had worked. The people were usually very happy with their royal family because they pleased every need they had. Every child had from the age of eleven to the age of nineteen to learn as much as they can in the area of their choosing. Some chose business, others chose orphanages, and some just got bored and chose worker. But Thomas didn’t want to do something easy like that, and he decided he would run a farm. It had never been done before successfully.
So Thomas, along with his personal servant, Fredrick, ran into the world of a peasant. There he changed his name to, “Tanner,” without really what a tanner was. He exchanged his mask for a pair of glasses. He purchased a small plot of land next to a farm named, “Starry Apples.” And on that farm, he met Miahla Gordon, a commoner whose family farmed for a life. And for the first year, because of Tanner’s attitude/point of view on the simple, yet needed things in life, the twosome hated each other with a passion. That is, until the semi-annual census. There, Miahla, Mimi for short, saw Tanner turning into the prince every girl raved about.
From then on out, Tanner was forced to keep an eye on Mimi, for fear that he would be discovered. But over the course of watching, “against his will,” he found himself wanted to know more. They spent a lot of time together, and eventually, Tanner realized that he was beginning to like the girl known as Mimi. Mimi also felt the same as she realized that Tanner wasn’t a snob, he was just honestly trying to learn her way of living. But blinded by friendship, the twosome kept their feelings a secret.
As they grew up, they spent most of their time with the other. Whether it was watching a butterfly come out of its shell, napping in an ageless oak, or if it was learning to waltz under the stars, most were able to tell they were head over heels. The rest of their time was spent, in his case, learning about the life of a farmer, or in her case, doing chores. Time moved on, and eventually the pair fell in love.
When the two turned nineteen, though, Tanner was reluctant to leave. Leaving the town of Madien forever for the gloomy castle of Dawn meant leaving Mimi and their memories. It was custom for a Dawn royal to chose his/her spouse in a ball immediately after they leave their county. All nobles, or eligible, women/men were to attend. The person of honor, or Tanner, was given one personal invite so he/she could choose one person out of the eligibility to attend the ball. Obviously, the boy chose Mimi.
A bit heartbroken, Mimi tried to tell Fredrick to tell Tanner she couldn’t attend. Her family had been having problems with the farm, she had lied. (Little did she know, Tanner passed a law that would limit the amount of food brought to market, thus helping her family live.) Fredrick had relayed the message, much to Tanner’s disappointment. Seeing this, the loyal servant personally brought the girl to the ball, though he would be punished. He spent money out of his own pocket to get her dressed up.
Then the story above happened, and thus they lived happily ever after. THE END.
