Shadows of Doubt
For those people who want to finish up my story because they've read it but never got to finish it. Dedicated to Sarah M.
Shadows of Doubt~ Part 1 (Krystal)
K.R.Y.S.T.A.L.
…I’d tell you my biggest secret…
Footsteps padded through the rain.
“You’d better make a run for it!” A voice called.
“Yeah, they’re gaining on you!” Another said.
“Okay, okay! I get it! Why don’t you help me out?” I called back.
“Good point. Hey, Cheese-for-brains!”

…but then it’d no longer be a secret…

The monster stopped and turned around. Its followers continued running. “Crap.” I muttered, making sure that no one would hear me. “Alright, I’m in section CS8!” I called.
“As usual, I’m always one step ahead of you.” A voice called. I looked up. I saw a dark figure on the ceiling. Nessa, of course. “Lightning Lash!” FWAP! The yellow whip caught the followers by surprise.
“I’ll help! Frostbite Blade!” I called. With the blade to my side, I raced through the line of monsters, hitting the last of the monsters.
“Hey, I need some help here, too! You remember Cheese-for-brains?” A voice called.
“Oh, sorry!” I called as I did a running jump into the air, soaring over the buildings. I was born with hollow bones, allowing me to soar through the air, according to the wind speed and direction.
“Hey! Duck!” A voice called from behind me. I landed, just as the Lightning Lash struck the monster.
“Frostbite Blade: Ice Aura!” I called as a blue aura swept the monster off its feet.
“Too easy.” A girl murmured as the monster faded away, into the dawn’s light.

Hi, my name is Krystal. My friends and I are a special group of alien-busting girls.
The one with the Lightning Lash is my friend Nessa.
The two facing the real monster were Abigail and Tanya.
In the era of darkness, the four of us were assigned to bust aliens by this weird psychic dude named Calle. But, as always, there’s a catch. The four of us are still ordinary schoolgirls. It’s hard to bust aliens and keep up with all of our seventh-grade homework, too. It’s also hard for us to maintain alien-busting without the others knowing. To make it even worse, most monsters attack us during school hours.
During school hours, we wear watch-like communicators to talk to others. But, most of the time, we just use it to goof off and gossip.
After school hours, we use the Com. It’s sorta like headphones, except that it has a well-hidden piece that we use to talk through. It’s custom made to fit only our heads and to blend in with our hair colour.
Each of us has a weapon in addition to our communicators.
My Frostbite Blade, well, it’s a blade made of the coldest ice, with the coldest spirit. No ordinary person can adapt to its aura, just ones that the wielder can trust.

Nessa’s Lightning Lash is a lash but can also straighten itself out into a sword. Its blade is shaped like lightning and has a yellow-brown colour.

Abigail’s Heartbreaker is huge, I repeat, HUGE hammer that’s red and black with spikes all over it. It’s gigantic, I find it amazing that she could hold it, much less wield it with one hand!

Tanya’s Angelbow is pretty small, but it sure is strong! A normal human couldn’t see the arrow, because it’s so fast.

Today was the greatest day of my life! Not. It was Valentine’s Day, and as intermediates, we had a dance. It was recess, and the four of us were talking about the dance. Turns out they all had dates. There weren’t many girls in the intermediate grades, and so many guys were missing dates. But then most of the girls were wallflowers, as did a couple of guys, which meant that I was the only popular girl without a proper date! I moaned.
“Krystal, there’s a couple of guys eyeing you, you know?” Abigail said.
I moaned again, knowing that most of the guys in this school were missing dates. Most knew that I was their only chance. The bell rang, shaking me from my thoughts of misery. Walking back to the door, a hand was placed on my shoulder.
“Krystal! I’m glad I found you.” A low voice rang from behind me.
I spun around. Blake! “So…what is it?” I asked.
“Can we talk for a sec? In private?” Blake asked.
I nodded, walking slowly away from the door. “Okay, what is it?”
“You know how most of the guys are missing dates?”
“Yes?” I murmured, already knowing where this conversation was going.
“Well, I’m one of them, and I thought maybe you didn’t have one.”
“And?” I prompted. Just say it! I hissed in my head.
“So...uhhh…would you like to go to the dance with me?” he asked, twiddling his fingers.
“Of course I will!” I smiled.
He smiled back. “Okay, see yah there!” He called as he headed inside.
I hope I haven’t made a bad choice! I thought in my head as I dropped off my things in my locker and headed into class.
“So…how’d it go?” Nessa asked, just as I took my first step into the classroom.
“How’d what go?” I asked, confused.
“Don’t play stupid with me, we saw you with Blake. What’s going on between you two?”
I sighed. There was no way that I could’ve told her what had happened. “Nothing, you see us playing together all the time. What’s wrong with that? I mean, Tanya plays with the guys all the time, do you accuse her of hanging out with so many guys?” I asked.
“But on Valentine’s Day?”
Argh! I hissed in my head, knowing that she wouldn’t give up until I finally admitted the truth. “So? This is the third year that you’ve seen us together, talking. What’s the big difference?” I asked.
“Alright, class. Time to go to the gym for the dance!” Our teacher, Ms. Snowball said. The class quickly lined up and we headed down.

Down at the gym, I found Blake waiting for me. “Hi.”
“I didn’t tell anyone, but the others don’t give up easily.” I warned.
“I understand. But it’s not like, a big surprise or anything, right? I mean, we’ve been friends for all these years, no one’s noticed anything for so long, why now?” He asked.
“I don’t know. But they’ve been trying to get us together for all these years, they might be smug about it. That’s how I lost Hakama.” I sighed.
“It’s alright. I’ll make sure that they’ll leave us alone.” He growled. Was that a threat?
“So?” Abby asked as soon as I walked up to them.
“So what?”
“You were with Blake again. What’s up with that?” Nessa demanded.
“Nothing! Seriously! Don’t you think that I’d tell you if something was up?” I hate lying to my friends! Why do I have to lie so much?
“But he’s all over you? Are you just going to ditch him like that?” Abby persisted.
“Well, you guys said that, and you guys keep trying to get us together!” I snarled. “Couldn’t you just leave me alone for once?” I asked, looking up, I caught Blake’s eye. He nodded and I turned around to see the grade 8 boys asking Ms. Somerville, the DJ, to turn it up. Ms. Somerville nodded and turned the music down.
“Would anyone like to request a song? Anything appropriate?” She called.
“How ‘bout Broken Strings?” A voice called. I whipped around, seeing Blake. “You know you love this song. Leave whatever they think of you behind.”
After asking Ms. Somerville for permission to sing, we leapt up on stage and each grabbed a mic. We belted out the lyrics to the song, still under the watchful eyes of Nessa and Abby.
“Let me hold you, for the last time, it’s the last chance, to feel again…”

When all is gone
When all hope fades
When the last memory fades
All that remains
Is the Silenced Echoes of my life.
