MELODY SONG “Kick-butt Extraordinaire.”
There’s this girl that I know.
Some call me her best friend. Some call me her stalker. Others call me her pet dog. Well, either way, I’m stuck with her because of my parent’s debt - they owe her family a lot of money. So in exchange for cleaning their home and for me to accompany her wherever she goes, my family has been working off this debt.
Anyway, her name is Melody: Melody Song. She has always found her name amusing. She tells me her parents, no matter how stoic and superior they may act around others, they do have some sort of sense of humor… thus her name. “Then again, Melody is better than Lilly, personally,” she tells me. She’s about five two in height. Because of her family’s status (no matter how much they try to keep this status a secret) and old-fashioned ways, Melody’s family makes her keep her “princess-length long” hair. She says she hates how long her black hair is and how she wish she could wear her ponytail higher without looking like a total idiot. Her eyes a lovely shade of golden brown. No, I am not kidding, this chick’s eyes are almost HAZEL and freaking Asian.
She’s really nice. Doesn’t like violence too much and has a strong hatred for anything hospital-related. She’s caring, especially for her brother even if he doesn’t appreciate it at all. He doesn’t like being doted on. Melody also hates pollution. She’s somewhat simple-minded albeit she’s a complete and utter genius. At first glance, you would think she was a bit ditzy and clumsy.
Melody has always been a bit strange. But then again, anything from being rich to dying your hair the wrong color is strange in a small town. Winters, California is no exception. Nevertheless, the people here are still very nice people and though word gets around, it’s only a bit of small town gossip - no harm in that, right? That is, until the Song's decided to move in from L.A., bringing the four year old Melody and her twin brother, Dillon, with them.
From the beginning, rumors went around this one family. They bought four properties on the outskirts of town in one go and none of them seemed to mind spending so much money. Many jaws dropped when they saw what was being built onto the property: a huge house. The home was at least twice the size of the biggest house in Winters at the time. And when confronted about the home, Mrs. Song had only looked at the home then back at the reporter and said, “Oh, my husband and I just wanted to settle down into a smaller home with less people around. Your town is quite lovely.” Everyone was speechless. Even though the entire family denies it, everyone knows the Song's are filthy rich. From what, no one ever dared to ask.
The rumors intensified when the twins got into school. Despite the fact they were both relatively friendly to everyone (Melody more than Dillon by far) most kids were afraid to even approach them. Maybe it was Melody’s ridiculously long hair, her large vocabulary, her amazing physical abilities, or her incredible reading/writing/mathematical skills. Or maybe it was Dillon’s long hair (or long for a boy’s standard’s) that always covered his eyes so that no one knew what color they were, his crazy amounts of energy, his always correct answers to hard questions, or even how he wore a mask to cover his mouth. Parents were constantly complaining about them, saying how they were too advanced in both mental and physical abilities to be around their kids.
All complaints and rumors were ignored and the twins soared through school like a knife through melted butter.
I didn’t actually get to know Mel until we were in seventh grade when I had to start working under her. By then, it had become more and more apparent that the Song children were not normal. Melody loved wearing bright colors and neons. Dillon loved wearing gray and blacks and decorating his mask. They were complete opposites, yet their complimented each other… a little too well. Not only could Dillon sprint a mile without stopping, he would still have plenty of energy to finish a forty question test within fifteen minutes. Melody easily defeated people twice her size in basketball by a twenty point lead, while also defeating men thrice her age in solving complex equations. Both had the best grades and athletic prowess.
But there is something only I know about these two that could easily destroy the two that I found out when I accidentally stumbled across them both after school. Melody has a weakness, as does Dillon, but the difference is this: Dillon is sick with some type of lung disease and Melody’s weakness is Dillon. The boy’s sickness is the reason why the Song's had moved in the first place. Apparently L.A.’s pollution had been causing problems, so they moved to where it might be cleaner.
And after years of being her servant (slash best friend), we’re both eighteen. She has told me a lot about her self… one of the things she told me was that her worst nightmare and hardship would be being unable to save the people she said she would protect, despite being, “epically amazing and freaking kick butt awesome” and being unable to master something after a few tries (she not used to being imperfect). I think she’s a little slow though; with her computer-like mind, perfectly fit body, magical immunity to pain, and strange moves, nothing could stop her from protecting her precious people.
