“Wow,” I gasped, staring out into the crowd of people from behind the metal support beams for the stage, “Big crowd.”
Jazzy poked her head out too, and stacked hers on mine. I felt her hum. “Eh, don’t worry about it Lynn. You’ll do fine, just do what we’ve practiced, and everything’ll be okay.”
I drew my head back, and placed a hand on my chest.
Badum. Badum.
“Cherylynn?”
I opened my eyes to see Pearl staring at me worriedly. I could tell she was nervous too - she always shakes violently when she becomes high strung; her beautiful, classy dress did not hide this fact too well - but her eyes held genuine concern for me.
“I’m fine, Pearly. Just nervous.”
She gave me one of her comforting and understanding smiles.
“Just remember this: everyone of us at AMA had a first time on stage too. We all did, and that’s why, no matter what, no one will blame you for a mess up. So just relax.” Gina came up to the rest of, decked out in her usual punk-rock attire, similar to Jazzy’s casual dress shirt and black skirt.
“Hey, Kiana, get over here!”
“Hm? What?”
Jazzy gestured towards me. Kiana looked at me and nodded her head.
“Good luck, Cherylynn. May the best singer win.”
I gave her a small smile in return. My eyes trailed back to the crowd and loud cheering. Even if I could relax, I don’t think I would, I told myself.
The high this was giving me was too wonderful to pass up.

Cherylynn is the new girl on the block to the small Academy of the Musical Arts. After years of switching from school to school, she decided she was making her final transfer to AMA, and she was determined not to make a total idiot out of herself like she on so many occasions.
She can’t play an instrument. She can’t disc jockey. Can’t be a producer. Has never written lyrics in her life, and forget writing or reading notes!
So how did she get in? Better yet, how did she get to the top of AMA’s musical curriculum when she has no musical talent whatsoever?
Her voice, obviously. Ever since she was young, Lynn has had the most captivating singing voice, not to mention the widest range any of her vocal teachers have ever heard. Because she absorbed every single song her teachers gave to her (even the most advanced they could give) and played them beautifully with her first try with ease, teacher after teacher sent her across the world to hundreds of different music school.
But no school ever challenged her like this. Not only was AMA small (it took up about four blocks at the most), it pushed its students farther than any other musical school. Not only did the students learn there, they WORKED there.
That’s right. At AMA, if you manage to get an invitation or actually pay your way in, the school will pay you to be a student. That’s not all. All students have a contract with the school, and every test that is taken is are turned into professional tracks. By the end of their senior year, most students are already pretty well-to-do, and have three CDs out. Also, there are no finals that threaten your grade… but if you don’t come up with an original, award-winning song by yourself by the time you graduate, you’re toast.
Lynn absolutely fell in love with this idea.
But seeing as she was only vocals, (and nothing else) she knew she would have to find someone to help her understand the sheet music. That’s when Kiana Park came in, and taught her the basics during their shared first period. Lynn was instantly the gossip of the day, everything whispering, “Oh my God! Kiana actually talked to her! That must mean she’s talented!”
Because of the attention, several girls approached her: Jaze, Pearl, and Gia. Each girl had a different genre of music, and each asked her to play in the school’s annual Winter Bliss concert. Wanting to please, she agreed to all of them.
With Lynn’s insane addiction to music, will her love of the song pull her through?
