It was April 16, 2003 when I joined Gaia Online, then known to all as go-gaia, actually. The site was little more than a forum with a cute anime avatar system that allowed you to gain gold by spending time in the site, which you could use to purchase clothing for said cute avi.
And here it is - fourteen years later, and I still find myself returning from time to time, if only to play dress-up for a few minutes, pondering all of the wonderful things that have happened, places I've been, and people I've met only because of this website. Yes, it's true, I would not be where I am (or in fact, WHO I am) to this day without Gaia Online.
Who am I now, anyway?
It's been such a long time, and on the off chance that some old friends happen to stumble upon this entry, I'd like to let you know what my life is like now, since SO much has changed.
In 2008, I moved to Oregon and got married. The husband ended up in prison (very long story), and our relationship fell apart due to the fact that we rushed into marriage without spending enough time building a solid bond that could withstand something like that... Now, I've moved to Wisconsin, and I'm in a different relationship (since 2011) that has been just amazing. Words can't begin to express my happiness and contentment here. And I -never- thought I'd wind up in Wisconsin, but life is funny like that, and I am quite satisfied with how things are going.
I'm working at a company called Precision Metrology, which was bought out in September 2016 by a much larger company called Trescal. We do calibration and repair for ALL kinds of tools, electronics, etc. It's mind-boggling, honestly. When I started, I came home every day for months with my head literally aching in pain from all the information I was trying to absorb.
Now, I've been in this position (Administrative Assistant is my title, technically) for well over 2 years, and am quite proud to say that I've more than got the hang of things - I've actually performed the duties of the Facility Manager for months at a time due to her being out on back surgery, so I'm getting some quite excellent work experience. On top of all of that, I have actually begun in the last several months to actually do calibrations myself, though I turned down the opportunity to officially become a calibration technician because I really enjoy the office aspect to my job.
Right now, things are strange at the company because things are starting to change due to our new owners. Things seem to be looking up, and I'm excited to see what happens when the old owner's contract ends this September.
I do the Facebook thing, I chat with a few close friends in a chat group on Hangouts daily, and on weekends I play Minecraft (I have my own server), and sometimes other games on Steam, or watch stuff on Netflix. There's always something I'm behind on. I joined the YMCA in March, and have been losing weight pretty steadily (it's been a struggle all my life), but going regularly keeps me pretty busy on weekdays. Work/gym/eat/sleep/repeat.
That's pretty much my life in a nutshell right now. That, and spending time with my kitties. There are other hobbies, but they don't get a whole lot of time right now, which I'm hoping will change in the future, once Chris (the boyfriend) and I move hopefully somewhere closer to where I work. Oh, that's another thing - my drive to work is a long 45 minutes in good weather. Never thought I'd be one to actually have to 'commute,' but there it is. I'm old.
