Kamala flung herself backwards, stunned at what she had said. "But, but...aren't you an elf though? Your grandparents wouldn't be to happy." She said, scratching her chin.
Shirrai smiled. "I have studied elves thoroughly. They value magical strength and knowledge. As an elven female, even a halfling, I have more magical strength than the males, but I have barely any knowledge. If I am to be the heir of Caer Mallos, I must have that knowledge and becoming a Sage is the best way to do that. No one I have met has had more teachable magical knowledge than Sages." This wasn't a careless decision on her part; she had thought it through carefully.
Kamala leaned backwards a bit and smiled, giving her a thumbs-up. "Sages aren't as strong at Elves in magic but we are the smartest things out there when it comes to knowledge and knowing what to do." She said, putting her hands behind her back she rocked her head.
"Exactly," Shirrai said. "Sometimes, brute force strength in magic isn't enough. You also need to know your opponent's weaknesses and tactics to exploit those weaknesses. Sages are unmatched when it comes to that. Will you help me?"
Kamala nodded happily, grabbing her hand she ran to the front of the academy. "Do you have money on you? You'll need quite a bit to enter." She said, coming back to the man who they talked to.
He lifted his head and tipped it in wonder. "What would you like now?" He said, resting his chin on the hand.
Shirrai nodded to Kamala. "I have money." Turning to the man, she said firmly, "I would like to start on the path to becoming a Sage, if I may."
The man smacked his hand on his book, getting up. He smiled. "Good going! The cost to enter is 70,000 gold." He said, sitting back down.
Shirrai pulled a velvet bag out from under her cloak and placed it on the counter. It clinked, the sound of coins-on-coins. "This should be enough," she said.
He took the bag and looked at it, putting it away. He smiled and handed her a scroll. "Go to Kaiser. He will give you the written exam to start with, and hand him this scroll. I was wanting to give it to him but I'm too busy." He said, turning back to his work, scribbling with his pencil.
Shirrai took the scroll carefully, with the feeling that it was important for some reason. "Thank you," she said, and turned down the hall, pleased that she remembered the right way to go.
Kamala bowed to him, and followed after Shirrai. "When you graduate, they will give you a pair of clothes like mine. Unless you don't want them, you don't need to." She said, hopping through the portal once again, only to appear in another room they where in earlier.
Shirrai nodded to her, to show that she had heard her, and walked up to Kaiser. "Hello again sir," she said. "I would like to study to become a Sage. I was told to give this scroll to you." She offered the scroll to him.
Kaiser looked at them. Fixing his glasses he took the scroll and read through it in what seemed like fifteen seconds. "Interesting." He said, putting the scroll in one the large pockets he had.
Shirrai waited silently, hands clasped behind her back.
Kaiser looked at them, then just at Shirrai. "Well...let's begin then." He said slowly, handing Kamala a large book. She fell over under the book's weight. She struggled and brought it up, making it float in front of her so it wasn't heavy. She looked at it.
"Ohh..this." She said, floating it over in front of Shirrai.
"You must study this knowledge. When you have, come back to me and take the test." He said, turning to the scroll again.
Shirrai looked at the book, then back at Kaiser. "Thank you sir," she said with a curtsy.
Kaiser nodded and didn't even pay attention. Kamala walked over to a desk and sat down in a large chair on her knees, one hand on her lap. Her red strands lay beside her and she smiled.
"Let's get started. I'll help you if you don't understand something." She said, taking out a book from the shelf behind her and starting to read it very fast.
Shirrai also took a seat and placed the book on her lap. She started to read it, very intrigued by what it contained.
Kamala scratched the back of her head, her hand in the book to keep it open and her bright blue eyes following the words.
