{Broken.}
--
I awoke very suddenly to the nearly deafening sound of a fly buzzing by. I hadn't even the slightest idea of what had taken place last night, it was all such a blur. All I could recall was the fact that Louis had stood me up for the third time in a row. By now I had finally gotten the hint that he didn't feel the same way for me as I felt for him.
My head spun as I quickly leapt to my feet with strength that I didn't know I had. Odd. Since when had I become this agile? I shrugged it off, suddenly realizing that I was probably worrying my family sick after being out in the woods all night. I had to get back home before they started panicking and requiring a detective to find me.
I turned onto the narrow path leading back into the small town where I lived. It seemed to be a busy day, for I could smell a large assortment of pastries from the local bakery and hear raucous voices from even this distance. I skipped along the path, humming a tune; even though the skies were cloudy today, it was still a very beautiful day. Nearly every head turned in my direction as I sauntered down the cobblestone road. Great, my parents had probably told everyone that I hadn't come home last night. One such gawking girl whispered something to her friend, who giggled in response. That pretty much confirmed my suspicions.
I decided that I was probably hungry since I never had dinner last night. I didn't exactly feel hungry, but I would grab something to eat anyway. I stopped by my favorite diner.
"Good morning, Thomas," I eagerly greeted the man behind the counter, interrupting him from wiping out some glasses. He turned in utter surprise, for I had unintentionally snuck up on him.
"Oh, um, hi," he answered awkwardly, "I haven't seen you here before," he added, taking in my appearance with confusion.
"Very funny," I replied sarcastically, "I leave for one night and the whole town treats me as though I'm some naughty new girl who doesn't know the rules."
"Umm... seriously, do I know you?" I could tell from his face that he really meant what he said. Furthermore it was really starting to irritate me.
"Never mind," I avoided his question, "just get me some tea please." I didn't understand, I certainly wasn't acting any different than I usually did, and I was positive I looked the same as usual. What was wrong with everyone? Did they all mysteriously get amnesia? Thomas returned with a glass of hot tea, temporarily distracting me from my train of thought. I hastily thrust some money toward him without a word. Even when he left I still could sense him peer over at me every so often.
I just quietly sipped my tea, pretending to be preoccupied with my lace napkin that was stained in several places. I couldn't taste a thing, the tea was excruciatingly bland and it completely ruined the good mood I had been in earlier. Upon finishing the disturbing tea, I realized I must be a complete mess from my night among nature. I pulled the door to the Ladies' room open just as a fairly pretty girl rushed past me, glanced up at me, and silently fumed with jealous longing as she resumed her mad dash. Everyone was officially pissing me off today.
I immediately walked over to the long mirror in the corner of the room only to find that the person in the mirror wasn't me, but someone entirely different! Her long silver hair was pulled into a messy, yet somehow still elegant, ponytail held together by a faded pink bow. Her pale skin shone with a radiance that was almost unreal. Overall she was insanely and dangerously beautiful. The only way I was able to decipher that the person I was staring at was myself were the strange girl's eyes. They were pale blue, as were mine.
All of the things that had happened to me last night came back to me with such force that I found myself cringing. I was a monster, a damned beast who deserved to die. I clenched my fist and swiftly shattered the reflection of the broken girl in the mirror.
I could never risk going home now, there was no telling what my mother would do to herself if she ever found out her daughter was a night-leech. I wandered back into the street, unsure of what I was going to do with myself. After passing a few blocks, I found a dismal alley mostly concealed with darkness. I could at least stay here for awhile uninterrupted. I huddled into a far corner, contemplating my existance and growing more and more thirsty by the hour.
