A Day out of life
Story by Sandra Louise Benedict*
Kana's ears twitched as she walked down the hallway in her school. Her brown hair was pulled back and tied into a loose messy bun. It made her Cat-Like ears stick out.
"Hello Michelle!"
"Hello Kana! How are you doing?" Michelle stopped and smiled at Kana who was trying to keep all her books from falling.
"Well. I am doing great! I better be off to class, you know how Shizumi is." Kana rolled her eyes then giggled. She started walking off as Michelle said her good byes. When Kana got to the doorway of her History class. She dropped all of her books by accident. Hurriedly; she picked them up and walked into her class not knowing her hair tie had fallen out.
"Kana, why are you wearing your school uniform like that?" her Teacher Mrs. Shizumi asked with a commanding voice. Kana looked her clothes over and realized what the teacher was going on about. Her shirt was not completely tucked in.
Mrs. Shizumi was an extreme perfectionist and liked everything and everyone in perfect order. Her hair was a light pink color and was always pulled back into a neat bun, making her look professional. Her eyes were of a purple color making them stand out from her face.
"Well... I was in a hurry this morning! If you adults didn't make us kids get up so early for school we would have a little more time for self appearance." She smirked at her teacher and walked off to her seat, she tried to tuck in the shirt. The kids quietly cheered as she walked past them.
Kana was a smart girl. Popular, sweet and not the least bit preppy, she also had a streak of bad girl in her.
She sat in her seat and put her stuff on her desk. She realized she forgot her pencil case; she turned to the boy next to her.
"Hey, Ha'ri, Do you have an extra pencil?" Ha’ri looked at her for a moment and smiled.
"Well, Let me look." he turned away from her and dug through his bag. "Oh here!" he handed the perfectly sharpened pencil to her.
"Thanks!" She smiled and went back to her book.
Ha'ri continued to stare at her ears.
"So... odd." he said aloud. Kana’s ears twitched.
"Huh? What did you say?" Kana looked at him with a slightly angry face. She knew he was looking at her ears; she hated it when people would stare.
"Do you have a problem with my ears?" she said in a more demanding voice; her voice was quiet enough that her teacher had not heard her.
"I-it's just your ears... I'm sorry. I just think they are cute!" Ha'ri's cheeks turned a slight pink color, as did Kana's.
"O-oh..." her ears twitched excitedly. She did not know Ha'ri well; she just knew he was a quiet kid that always wore a baseball cap.
"I'm Kana...,” she said with a stupid look on her face. She was never good with guys even though they all liked her. A piece of her glossy brown hair fell in her face as they stared at each other.
Mrs. Shizumi looked at them for a moment then walked toward them. They were too busy staring at each other to notice her. Shizumi slammed a ruler down on Kana’s desk and made all the kids jump, even Kana and Ha’ri.
“Yes Shizumi! What do you want?” Kana’s eyes darted from Ha’ri to the teacher.
“Uh, I was getting a pencil from Ha’ri… Sorry, I had forgotten my Pencil case.” Kana’s ears were flat against her head; she was scared of her teacher. Ha’ri quickly looked at Kana.
“Oh, and I’m sorry too. I just needed to ask her a question. If anyone gets in trouble, it should be me.” The teacher looked at Ha’ri and smiled.
Kana smiled slightly, but her ears stayed flat.
“Kana, there is no reason to be scared of me!” the teacher laughed then walked off. She must have been in a really good mood, because normally she would send kids like them to detention.
Kana’s ears slowly rose up as she cocked her head to the side.
“What the heck? Did Shizumi get bashed in the head when she was sleeping?” she whispered to Ha’ri. By then she realized she had a hold on Ha’ri’s hand.
“Oh, um, I’m sorry!” Kana let go of his hand and turned back to her desk, her face turning three shades of red. For the rest of the class she kept looking over at Ha’ri.
Then soon, it was lunchtime.
“Kana! Kana!” Ha’ri called as he ran up behind Kana. She turned around to be face to face with him. He was slightly taller than she was and pretty muscular with bright yellow eyes.
“Oh…” Kana looked up and met his gaze; she gave him a goofy smile.
“Hello Ha’ri… Do you need something?” Kana said then looked down at her hands. She still had the pencil he had given her during their History class.
“Lets go sit outside to eat lunch today… that is, if you want to.” Ha’ri watched her with anticipation. Kana thought for a while and nodded a yes.
“I could use some fresh air.” She put on a bright smile and turned. Ha’ri stared after her for a moment. “I’ve got to tell her something,” he thought to himself. He ran up to her and pulled her back by her shoulders pulling her into an empty class room.
“Ha’ri! What was that for?” she turned and faced him once again. Ha’ri looked her in the eyes then gave her a warm hug. His baseball hat fell off of his head. Kana, not knowing why he was doing this, stood there silent for a few moments.
“Ha’ri? What's wrong?” Kana pulled back and looked him in his eyes. He looked so different without his hat on. Why was he so different? Was it because no one ever saw him without his hat? Or was he hiding something under it?
Kana felt a light brush of fur on her arm making her jump and scream. She looked down and saw a white tail swaying to and fro. Her head shot back up to Ha’ri’s eyes.
“What? Why do you keep it a Secret?” Her ears were laid back showing her emotions; she was sad, mad, confused.
“Is this why you never take your hat off?” Ha’ri nodded to her words.
“I didn’t want everyone to know, I was afraid of what they would see and say. After I met you, I wasn’t afraid. You are strong. I am weak.” He stepped into the light showing his ears. They were white, like his tail and hair.
He walked to Kana and wrapped his slender arms around her body.
“Don’t tell anyone…” He let go of her and looked at her for a moment then kissed her lips softly.
Kana stood there for a moment, shocked! His kiss was so intoxicating, making her feel ever so helpless. She soon pushed him, suddenly feeling dread.
“Ha’ri, I barely even know you! What are you doing kissing me?” She took a step back while staring at Ha’ri. He looked at her with an evil look plastered on his pale face. Kana put her hand up to her lips as she began to feel faint and light.
The next day an alert of missing girls went out. The list consisted of three girls, all having cat ears: Kana Ichinawa, Kisa Usawaki and Utada Hikaru. Last seen with a male student about sixteen years of age named Ha’ri.
Kana shook the cage she was in; there were two other girls with her that just sat there quietly.
“It’s helpless,” the girl with purple hair said.
“Yes, we have tried for the past week…” the other said. Kana looked at them with tears streaming down her face; her hands were bleeding from punching and pulling on the cage bars.
“I can’t die here now!” Kana’s stomach growled loudly. One of the girls crawled to kana and hugged her gently.
“The hunger will fade after you have been here for a while; it’s a cat’s thing. Oh, and by the way, I’m Utada and this. Her name is Kisa. She has been here the longest…” She pointed to the other girl who looked rather weak. Kisa waved her bony hand at Kana. Kana looked at her with sorrowful eyes then Utada hugged her again, holding her against her breast, trying to comfort her. Kana let her tears flow and stain Utada’s shirt.
Just then, They all heard a loud slam; Ha’ri was back.
“Girls! I’m home!” Ha’ri walked to the cage and opened it and the three girls backed as far as they could from the cage door.
“Now, now, Girls, no need for that.” Ha’ri grabbed Kisa’s leg and pulled her to him. He wrapped his arms around her sickly, bony body.
“You’re tasty, you’re fine for right now.” Ha’ri dragged her from the cage and into a different room. The girls could still hear her screaming until they heard the sound of duct-tape being ripped off of its spool.
About an hour later he came back out. This time, dragging Kisa by the arm. Her clothes were ripped almost completely off of her body, her hands were bound together behind her back. Her body was weaker than before, He threw her into the cage and slammed the door shut.
“Come on Kisa, you should have known better, after all, you’re the one that has been here the longest.” He turned and walked away from the cage.
Kana hurriedly crawled to Kisa’s torn-up body.
“Kisa! What happened?” Kana lifted her head onto her lap and then took off her shirt to cover Kisa’s naked body as much as she could, soaking her shirt with Kisa’s blood.
“Ha’ri… he is a bad, bad boy… watch out for him. He says you’re next.” Kana held onto Kisa’s body, holding her close because her body began to become limp.
“Kisa! Stay with me!” By this time Utada was next to Kana trying to keep Kisa awake.
“Kisa, Can you hear me? It’s me, Utada. Can you stay with me sweetie?” Utada’s eyes filled to the brim with tears and soon they were to flow. Kisa’s hand fell from her chest to the floor making the two girls scream and cry.
Kana laid Kisa’s head lightly on the ground and crawled over the cage door. She began shaking it violently.
“Ha’ri! Get out here! I’m going to wipe the floor with your filthily existence!” Kana broke one of the rusted bars off of the door. She climbed through and unlocked the door from the outside.
“Hurry Utada, we need to go now!” Kana grabbed Utada’s hand and pulled her out of the cage. The two girls held onto each other as they walked through the house. The feeling of death swept over them as they walked into a room.
“This is the one Ha’ri dragged Kisa into....” They gasped at the sight of blood all over the walls.
Ha’ri walked in from the kitchen and spotted the young girls.
“Hey! How did you two get out?” He said as his eyes changed to an evil dark color. Kana grasped a knife that was covered in blood, She was guessing it was Kisa’s blood. Utada stepped behind Kana as she raised the knife above her head.
“Ha’ri, stay away from us, let us out!” Kana tried pleading with him, but it failed.
“If I go and do that, I won’t have any toys.” Ha’ri said teasingly. He started walking towards Kana and Utada with the evil smirk on his face. He got into her range to strike and she swung, splattering his blood down the front of her. She fell backwards shaking violently as Utada sat next to her trying to keep her from fainting.
Kana opened her eyes and rubbed them, she looked up and Mrs. Shizumi was standing over her.
“Kana! Why were you sleeping in my class? You have Detention right after school lets out!” Mrs. Shizumi said while walking away from her desk. Kana looked over at Ha’ri and sighed in relief. But just before she looked away Ha’ri smiled his evil smirk with a sparkle in his eye.
As soon as class was over, she headed to the detention class room. She looked into the dark room and heard someone.
“Hello.”
