Assassin bugs are predators, much like the mantises, and usually lie in wait for their prey. It was probably waiting to ambush a bee or hornet.
There are spiders that live on flowers that change their colors to match where they hunt. On a single wild rose bush I found yellow spiders in the centers, pink and white ones on the petals, green ones on the leaves, and grey and brown ones on the stems. I'm thinking that the assassin bugs I found were much the same. The assassin bugs I found on the flower centers of the zinnias were cream and orange, the ones on the black-eyed susans were a much darker orange, and the ones on the tree trunks were grayer or nearly black.
