I agree with Lireal, I think Garth Nix was just tossing balls up in the air for a while before he finally decided which character would be doing what. Don't get me wrong I love description but I think he wrote too many chapters just trying to deal with one scenario before moving onto another one.

I also read his books Shades Children, the keys to the kingdom, along with the dark towers [or whatever its called] and started reading The Rag Witch but I really disliked The Rag Witch and couldn't get myself to finish it.
