The white walls in the small room seemed to be pressing in on him as he pulled himself farther back into the corner on his bed. It was the only thing in the room, but it was just as impersonal as the walls. There was no color or normal accessories to separate him from the others. William hugs his legs to his chest and stares vacantly at the observation window across the room, wondering if he was in fact being watched this very minute. Paranoia grips his chest and his heart starts hammering loudly in his ears. William tries to make the place disappear by singing softly to himself.
"Early one morning just as the sun was rising... I heard a maid sing in the valley down below... Oh, don’t deceive me... Oh, never leave me... How could you use a poor maiden so?"
William jumps as the door unlocks and gets pushed open by a chubby woman in a white gown. "Come on, William.Time to stretch." His eyes widened slightly and he tightens his arms around his legs even more. "Don't do this again, William. You don't want me to bring Sam and Don back in, do you?"
I want you to leave me alone...
He shakes his head furiously and remains seated. His plan was to fight with what little strength he had, as long as it kept him away from them. The lady sighs and looks off to the side in the direction of someone who was apparently standing nearby. "Sam, Don, if you please?" Two men in white outfits enter the room and stride over to the bed. They each take a hold of his arms and pull him off the bed.
"Get the bloody hell off me!" William shouted and started kicking and writhing about to get out of their grasp. He breaks one arm loose and swings it around, coming in contact with Don's jaw. "Grab that arm, Sam!" Sam makes an attempt to get a hold of his arm, but William swings his leg and kicks him in the stomach. Not exactly where he was aiming, but it knocked the wind out of him all the same. Don jerks his arm behind his back and pushes him down onto his knees. William winces and whimpers slightly as a sharp pain makes its way up his twisted arm. Sam gets up and takes a hold of his arm again. "Has the doc checked him out yet?"
"Not yet. They can have their reunion after play time. Let’s go, tiger."They push him out the door and down the hall to a large room where other people in white outfits are sitting at tables lost in their own worlds or standing up cackling like a mad man. William tries to back up, but he just collides with Don and Sam.” Play nice, tiger. We don't want to have to sedate you.” They release him and go back through the door, shutting it and locking it in the process. William spins towards the door with panic etched into his face. He tries fruitlessly to get it open without success. Turning slowly, he gazes at the others in the room with him.
An old man roamed around the room cackling like an old hag and muttering unhearable words. A woman in her mid to late thirties watched him and would shriek shrilly every time he'd came near hear cackling,” Come here, my pretty! I’ll treat you right!” William inched his way slowly into a corner and slid to the ground, interlacing his fingers in his blonde hair, pulling at it slightly. He attempted to block out the rising noise surrounding him, but the shrieking lady jumps runs over to him and grabs him, shaking him roughly. “Save me! He's going to kill me!Save me!!!"William's baby blue eyes widen in terror and he tries to get out of her clenched fingers. She digs her nails into his shoulders painfully and keeps shrieking at him, “Save me!He's coming! He's coming!!!"
His mouth opens slightly in horror and he stares wide-eyed at her as she releases him and starts ripping at her own skin. He scrambles sideways away from her, nearly getting trampled by Sam and Don in the process."Dolores!Calm down! No one's coming after you!” They struggle with her to put the straight jacket on, finally managing to get it on then they carry her out, still screaming.
Why am I here...?What did I do wrong...?
The old coot makes his way over to him, grinning from ear to ear. “Pretty lady, she was,eh?"William avoids eye contact, hoping he'll just go away. “Look at me when I'm talking to you, son! You better damn well respect your elders!” The old man slapped him across his face and pointed his finger at him. “Now answer me!” William scrambles backwards into the corner again with his hand against the side of his face."Y-Yeah...S-Sure..."The man smiles crookedly at him. “That’s a good lad.” He pats him on the head then turns and limps off, muttering ceaselessly again. Trembling and shaking terribly, William eyes everyone warily and frightened.
It's because I was bad...I'm a baaaaad man...
"Come on,sport. It's time to see your old pal.” Don pulls him to his feet and guides him towards the door. “I’m sure you remember Dr.Charles, right?"William tries withdrawing back into his mind as images start flashing before his eyes. Don makes him sit in a chair across from Dr.Charles then makes his exit.
"Hello,William.I thought I was done seeing you."Dr.Charles smiles at him warmly. William stares unseeingly at the ground, remaining silent. “Still won't talk to me,huh? It'll help. I promise. I’m your friend.I'm here to help."Dr.Charles watches as he shifts farther away from him, still silent. “I’m not going to hurt you. Is that why you keep ending up here? Does someone keep hurting you?"
He slams his head against the wall over and over again. Blood runs down his face, mingling with the rain.
"Make the image go away..."William whispered it quietly to himself, not realizing that he's even in the same room as Dr.Charles."Make what images go away,William?"He asks gently. “Did you do something? Did you see something?” William digs his fingers into the back of his neck. Blood starts running unfeeling down his neck from him digging them too hard into it. “Don’t do that."Dr. Charles walks over to him and goes to wipe the blood off. William jolts out of the chair and darts across the floor into a corner, staring wildly at him. “Stay away from me..."
"Easy, William...I was just going to wipe the blood off your neck."
"Stay away from me..."
"I won't come near you. Just come sit back down."
"I want to leave..."
"I can't let you leave until we know how stable you are."
"I want to leave now..."William's head starts swimming and he sways badly.Dr.Charles takes a cautious step towards him. “Are you going to sit down now? You’re looking a little weak in the knees and pale.” William shakes his head, causing the room to spin. “I...w-want..."His eyes slide closed and he collapses to the ground.
A woman seems to glide towards him as she walks. Her brown hair blowing behind her by an invisible wind. William gazes up at her in awe and relief washes over him. “Am I going to be ok?"She smiles warmly at him and goes down onto her knees, sitting on her legs. She places her hand against his cheek lightly. He closes his eyes and just feels her touch. Not wanting it to ever go away.
"Everything will be just fine..."
William opens his eyes slowly and stares unfocusedly at the ceiling. His head starts throbbing painfully and his arm feels numb. A different woman from the chubby lady walks in."Oh,good, you're awake. You gave us such a fright. You’ve been out for nearly a week.” He lay still, imagining the woman's touch from his dream. It was so familiar...Had it been just a dream? “Can you try to eat something for me,sweetie?I know you haven't eaten since you've been here.” The sensation of the woman's touch was gone. He turned his head slightly to look at the woman who was talking to him now. She was right, he hadn't eaten. He didn't want to eat.
She sits him up and holds out a forkful of food. “Come on, just a little bit. You’ve got to be starving.” He presses his lips together and tries to move away. “Either eat some of this or I'll get them to feed you through a feeding tube. It’s your choice.” Letting out a soft sigh he takes small bites of what she's giving him and forces it down."There.That wasn't so bad, was-?"William gets out of bed quickly and dashes to the bathroom. Barely making it to the toilet in time he starts vomiting everything he just ate up. After he throws that up he starts throwing up some blood and stomach acid. After about five minutes he stops. His chest feels like it's going to explode and his throat burns. A nasty metallic taste fills his mouth. He lays his head against the side of the toilet with his eyes closed.
The woman walks in and touches his forehead. “I think you're sick, sweetie.Let's get you back into bed so you can rest. We’ll try eating again later.” When she tries to assist him he pulls away shaking his head slowly. She finally forces him to get up and lays him back in bed. “I’ll have them bring in some medicine for you.” Before she finishes her sentence he's knocked out cold.
She kisses him lightly on the lips. He stares at her wonderingly. “You look so familiar...Do I know you...?"His voice sounds distant even to himself."Yes,you know me. You’ve been locked in that room for too long.” He tilts his head slightly, giving her a questioning look. “I must know...Who are you...?"She smiles gently and kisses him lightly again. “I can't tell you, William...You have to remember yourself..."She stands up and turns away from him. He attempts to get up, but his legs give away beneath him and he falls to his knees. She walks away slowly.
"Please...I need to know your name..."
William stirs slightly, but keeps his eyes closed. A loud ringing buzzes in his ears annoyingly. Thinks to himself, “Who are you...?"Voices are talking in the room, but they're to fuzzy for him to make out. He slips back into unconsciousness.
Screams echo around him. He grabs the girl by her hair and drags her along behind himself."Please!I want my mommy!” He grins wickedly at her. “You’ll be seeing your mum soon, pet."
His eyes slowly open. “How do you feel,William?"He gazes unfocusedly up at Dr.Charles.Turns his head away slightly and stares at the wall.Dr.Charles sighs.” He doesn't look good at all...I don't think anything will help him now..."
She will...She said everything will be ok...
"Come. Let’s leave him to his rest."Dr.Charles walks out with whoever else was assisting him. The shrieking lady's screams can be heard through the walls. William winces slightly at the sound and covers his ears. Past voices start screaming inside his head, taunting him, teasing him, forcing him to face past memories. “Go away..."He whispers. “Leave me alone..."The cries just grow louder though, causing him to jerk slightly in the bed. “Stop it...I can't do this anymore...I c-can't take it anymore..."He gets out of bed and lifts up the mattress, pulling out a pocketknife he'd snuck out of Dr.Charles office. Flips open the blade and stares at the smoothness of it. He drags the sharp edge slowly along the upper part of his arm to see how smoothly it will cut. A trail of blood follows the blade as his skin splits. He glances at his wrist and starts pulling the blade downwards on his wrist then starts digging it deeper and deeper into it. Blood starts pouring out of it and runs down his arm, dripping onto the floor and staining his white outfit. His little strength starts to deplate.Switches the knife to his other hand, but can't get it to operate because his nerves are dead in it now. Falls back in what feel like slow motion so he's lying twisted on the floor.
"Doctor! We need a doctor in here!” The chubby lady comes running in and applies pressure to the bleeding, but fails to stop the blood flow. Other people start running in to assist. They’re voice start fading as his eyes slide shut. He sees the woman from his dreams again. The tormented screams rise in his head again as he remembers who she was. His breath slowly seeps out and he mouths noiselessly to her image.
I'm sorry...
