Adventures in Insanity

Chapter 6: Loneliness

“Hurry up, cat!” Shark yelled back at Lion who was slowly starting to fall behind.
“Huh? I’m coming…” he murmured, running after Shark.
Shark rolled his eyes a bit at him and continued walked. Lion just followed after him quietly, keeping his head down. “This… this is all my fault…” he murmured softly.
Shark blinked at him. “Huh?” he sighed. “It wasn’t your fault. You didn’t know that would happen.”
Lion sighed. “I guess…” he murmured.
Shark sighed, wrapping an arm around his shoulders. “Come on, man. Ease up a little.” He said, glancing at him. Lion was a bit surprised by this friendly gesture as Shark continued. “It’s water under the bridge. All that matters is that we save Lunei and Pohkii. So stop being emo about this.”
Lion twitched. “I’m not emo!” he growled, pouting. “Anyway, you were the one that nearly strangled me!”
Shark chuckled. “Come on, I didn’t hurt you that bad, did I?”
Lion pointed at his neck were a bruise had formed.
Shark frowned. “Sorry…”
Lion shrugged. “No problem. Things like this always happen to kings. Can’t be liked by everybody, after all.” He grinned lightly.
Shark smiled a bit. “Well, we’re not getting anywhere by talking about the past. We don’t have much time as it is.”
Lion blinked, then nodded. “Right.”

“Sir, the bad people are coming closer…” the girl warned Ben who was still gazing upon his sister.
“I know… I know…” he murmured. “Let them come. I won’t be handing over Lizzy…”
Lunei, who was the one in the bubble, let her blank eyes peer at him.
“Be…n…” she whispered, making Ben look up and smile.
“Don’t worry, sister. I will protect you.” He said softly with a grain grin. Insanity (the bad kind) was brimming in his eyes.
“Sir! They’ve broken through the gate!” His servant warned. “We won’t be able to hold them off! The guards are—“
“SILENCE!” the servant jumped in surprise, trembling as her master continued. “I said let them come… so let them come, they’ll never take Lizzy away from me!”
The girl nodded quickly. “Y-yes sir…”
Ben snorted and looked back up at Lunei. “We’ll never be alone again, sister…”
Lunei just stared blankly into space. “Li…on…-ku…n…” she whispered.
Ben shuddered. “What? He was a… bad person after all…?”
Suddenly the doors to the room flung open and Lion and Shark ran in.
“You sadistic kid! What did you do to Lunei?!” Lion roared, his eyes blazing from behind his mask.
Ben stared at them, then sighed. “I was wrong, mister…” he said softly. “You’re one of the bad people after all…” he murmured.
Lion growled. “Just give Lunei to me! And give back Pohkii’s soul!”
Ben glanced at Shark. “Hm… your soul should be gone too…” he murmured, holding up a gourd. An eye opened at its center. “This should have your soul in it… How are you still moving…?”
Shark held out his hand where burns were visible. “The embers from the cigarette kept me conscious so I’m still of my own will…” he explained.
Ben chuckled. “Oh well… The girl is probably having a tough time in the world in the gourd…” he said, smirking.
Lion growled, pulling out his club. “b*****d!!” he roared, charging at Ben.
Ben merely smirked and glided out of the way. Before Ben could react, Shark swooped in next to him, swinging his katana at Ben.
Ben blinked in surprise and jumped back and out of the way. “Lion!” Shark called over to him. “Get Lunei’s gun! We’re gonna need it!”
Lion quickly ran over to where Lunei’s gun lay and grabbed it. “Got it!” he called. Shark was still attacking Ben. “The gourd! Get the—“
BANG!!
The gourd shattered into pieces. All three of them stared in shock. Shark slowly turned towards Lion, glaring.
Lion smiled nervously. “Eh heh heh … whoops…”
Ben fell to his knees. “No, no, no…” he murmured softly to himself.
“Kid, what’s wrong?” Shark asked, seeming a little annoyed.
Ben snarled, whirling around to face him. “No! You’re not taking my sister away again!!” he cried.
Lion blinked. “Your sister?”
“How dare you two ditch me!!” Shark and Lion blinked and glanced over their shoulders at Pohkii who had just stormed in. “Just leave me there to rot why don’t ya?!” she paused, looking at the sphere structure that held Lunei, then back at the guys. “What’s going on…?”
Lion rolled his eyes and turned back to Ben. “You’re Ben, right?” he asked. “You’re Lunei’s brother…”
Ben glared at him. “That’s right! I’m not gonna me left alone! Not again!” he yelled, tears streaming down his face.
Lion’s face softened and he walked over to him. “Ben, does Lunei want to go through with this?” he asked.
Ben blinked. “Huh…?”
“Well… She doesn’t want you to be alone…” he said softly. ‘But don’t you want her to be happy…?”Ben remained silent as he continued. “And… if you take her away from me… I’ll…” he let his voice trail off.
“Ben…” They blinked, looking at the sphere. Lunei wasn’t there anymore. Instead, the sphere had been cracked open and Lunei was lying in front of the broken mass, covered in glass, liquid from the sphere she was in, and blood.
“Lunei-chan!” Lion quickly ran over to her and picked her up.
“No! Don’t take her away!” Ben cried, running over to them and trying to grab Lunei back.
Lion held her close to him. “But… I…”
“Lion, let me talk to him…” Lunei said weakly.
Ben looked at Lunei curiously. “Lizzy…?”
Lunei smiled sadly, reaching out and gently ruffling his hair. “I’m sorry, Ben… But I have to stay here…”
Ben whined. “But I’m all alone…”
Lunei frowned. “I know… but don’t worry… I’ll be with you again… you’ll just have to wait for me…” she said softly, smiling reassuringly.
Ben paused for a moment, then nodded with a smile. “Right…” As he spoke, a portal of light appeared behind him. ” Come along, Benjamin. It’s time…” a heavenly voice called.
Ben nodded and headed towards the portal. Before he stepped through, he turned to them. “You. Lion. If you make my sister cry, then you’ll have to answer to me!” he said, trying to sound older then he really was. “Got it??”
Lion chuckled and nodded. “Right…”
Ben grinned, then quickly ran through the portal.

“Shaaaark!!” Pohkii whined, tugging on his sleeve.
Shark sighed. “What is it, Pohkii?” he asked quietly.
“I’m hungry!” she said on the top of her lungs.
Shark sighed again. “Alright, alright…” he murmured, going into the kitchen. “Lion! Lunei! What do you want for dinner?!” he called. He blinked when there was no answer.
“Lion?”
No answer.
“Lunei??”
Still no answer.
“Uh…” Pohkii spoke up when he went into the other room. “Lion’s asleep…”
Shark slapped his forehead. “What about Lunei?”
Pohkii looked back at Shark with a nervous smile. “She’s not there anymore…” she said quietly.
“…” Shark fumed for a few seconds before he screamed. “WHAAAAAAAAAT?!”
Lion yelped and sat up, looking around. “Eh? Wha??” he asked sleepily.
“You were supposed to be watching her!!” Shark growled, smacking Lion upside the head.
“Ow! What are you talking a—“ he cut himself off, noticing that Lunei was gone. “Uh… oops… I’ll go find her.” He said quickly, getting up and running out of the room.
“Lunei! Lunei!” he called, running outside. He then blinked, spotting Lunei on the roof of the hotel and jumped up to her. “There you are.”
Lunei jumped a bit, then smiled. “Hello.” She said softly.
Lion sat down next to her. “Is something wrong?” he asked.
Lunei shrugged. “I guess…”
“You guess…?”
“I’m not sure…” Lunei murmured. “I guess I’m a little worried that Ben’ll be alone… and scared…”
Lion wrapped an arm around her shoulders gently and pecked her forehead. “Your brother’s a strong kid. He’ll be okay…” he said softly, brushing a lock of hair out of her face.
Lunei looked away a little. “I guess…” she murmured quietly.
Lion frowned, then hesitantly leaned forward and pecked her lips.
Lunei blushed bright red as Lion pulled away. “I’m positive your brother will be alright.” He said gently, caressing her cheek gently.
Lunei continued blushing bright red, unsure of what to say. Lion smiled sweetly, wrapping his arms around her. “I will help you in any way I can…” he promised. “…Lunei…?”
Lunei rested against Lion quietly, sniffling lightly. “Eh?? Lunei, what’s wrong??” he asked worriedly. “Did I do something wrong? I’m sorry!”
Lunei shook her head. “It’s fine… really. I’m just… I’m just happy…” she said quietly. “I haven’t had anyone to talk to about this in a long while… I wish I had met you sooner. Just… promise you won’t leave…”
Lion smiled and hugged her tightly. “I will always be by your side… I promise…” he murmured softly. “As long as you’re by my side too…”
Lunei nodded. “Of course…” her voice was softer then it was before.
They sat there for a couple moments in silence before Lion spoke again.
“Lunei…?”
“Mm?”
“Can I ask you something?” Once again there was silence. “Lunei?” He looked down at her curiously, then chuckled when he saw that she was asleep.
“Heh… never mind…” he said to himself, pecking Lunei on her forehead. “May you sleep well, Lunei-chan…”
