Prologue wip

Catherine Fischer

The slam sounded from the car door as it was closed shut. A pair of soft, sea-green eyes followed the man who shut her door to the other side of the black Jaguar, in which he quickly took the driver's seat.

Cat said nothing, contenting herself with staring transfixed at the side-view mirror, watching with grim satisfaction the building she so despised fade into the distance.

Once it was completely out of sight, she visibly began to relax, finally feeling some semblance of freedom. Cat softly sighed, the action tousling her honey-blonde bangs before settling to frame her face. It wasn't likely that she was ever going to have the luxury of leaving, until the curious circumstance happened.

The dark-haired man escorting her from her prison sat at the wheel. Calm as can be, showing no emotion one way or the other. Cat tilted her head slightly in a curious fashion. The man's name was Mr. Crawford or other. For some reason, all she could think of was seafood.

The afternoon light made his glasses flash menacingly. He was regarding the windshield with a smug satisfaction, though she couldn't quite fathom why. Cat shook her head, returning to stare at the passing scenery alongside the road in the middle of nowhere.

"Cathrine,"

If the sudden break in silence startled her, it didn't show. Cat shot the driver a side-way glance, it being her only response to acknowledge him at first. Her gaze returned to the windshield after a pause.

"It's Cat." she corrected.

"Catherine." The amendment went unnoticed, however. "I trust you have been briefed on why you are being placed under the orders of Schwarz?"

She thought or a moment before responding in the same tone that gave a sense of professional composure. She nodded slightly, recalling the moment distractedly in her mind.

"Mm. Not much was said other than I was just being transferred, with Schwarz being in need of my 'talent'." The very idea that she was handpicked to be put into a team already was mind-boggling. She was never even sure if what she had was a very useful aspect for anything. "They" hadn't been expecting much from her, either.

Crawford cast a glance to Cat with an expression of mild boredom, before returning his gaze to the road ahead. "It was preferred you knew as little as possible. Which is why it's called a briefing."

He didn't have to smirk at his own sordid amusement, Cat could feel it just from his tone of voice. The humor wasn't appreciated. "More information will be issued when the time is deemed appropriate. You will just have to trust our judgment."

"Trust?" She snorted, "You came from Rozenkreuz, you should know how 'trust' is seen there. There isn't any." Cat left it at that, pointedly bringing her body closer to herself and turning to the door. She leered at the blurred scenery that passed outside the car.

No further words were exchanged during the trip.

-----

Crawford led the way down the hall to the adorned apartment where supposedly Cat's new team awaited her. She carried nothing but a small handbag and what looked to be a straight walking cane. Crawford carried her only suitcase, his reasons for doing so being the extra weight would have slowed Cat down, and punctuality was something he favored. Cat just shook her head and let him carry it. Hey, she wasn't complaining. But he'd make well not to underestimate her. Control over talents wasn't the only thing They taught.

Cat came to an abrupt halt, nearly running into a stand-still Crawford. She realized they must have reached the apartment. What surprised her however was that the door open almost immediately after pausing at the entrance. She hadn't noticed him toying with a key or anything.

He stood aside, motioning for her to enter. She quickly swept past him and stared at her new accommodation. It wasn't much in the way of fancy decor, but she could tell it cost a pretty penny. Schwarz must have good pay, she reasoned.

She registered the door closing behind her, Crawford striding past. Her attention was finally drawn from the room. Grimly, she wondered if the man would ever seem to lighten up. Living with a stiffy such as that was not looking appealing.

"Sorry honey, Brad's always like that. Only thing that could get that man to loosen up would either be a really good lay, or world domination. Unfortunately, the latter would be more probable."

Cat's head whipped around toward the unfamiliar voice, blinking when the owner of it came sauntering into the living room. The first thing that greeted her was a mane of bright orange hair, and piercingly blue eyes. Not to mention that lazy smirk that plastered his face. Only for a moment she wondered what the hell he was talking about and if he was even addressing her. She immediately made the assumption that is was a telepath.

"Schuldig." Crawford's voice cut into her thoughts almost as sharply as this new acquaintance's did. So Schuldig was his name. The corners of her mouth twitched in recognition. It was obvious he was a German, but the name gave the assumption there was more that met the eye. And Cat was certainly getting an eyeful.

The slam from the car door sounded, making Cat wince slightly. She never liked loud noises. Her soft sea-green eyes followed the dark-haired man around to the car until he took his place in the driver's seat. She said nothing even as they left, although she stared curiously at the driver, noting the solid grim expression as he pulled away from the cold, dark buildings.

She redirected her attention to the side-view mirror, watching her prison fade into the distance. She still wasn't free, but at least she was out of there. Being back with some sort fo normal civilization was going to be nice, she thought. Too long had she been in a cold place like that, even though the emotional turmoil never seemed to be stable. It was rare, if not impossible to find stabilitry in a place like that...

"Catherine."

She was abruptly brought out of her reverie, glancing toward her companion. She sighed, the action disrupting the stillness of her honey-colored bangs, causing them to lift from her face before settling them to frame her cheeks.

"It's Cat," she corrected.

"Catherine," The amendment went unnoticed, however. "I trust you have been briefed on you being placed under the orders of Schwarz?"

Absently recalling the events from a short time ago, she nodded. Her brow drew in slight confusion. "They told me I was being transferred under certain circumstances with the need of my Gift. They told me a pregoc had arranged I be put in that specific team. Never went into much detail than that."

It had surprised Cat when They approached her, telling her she was going to get to leave so soon. She hadn't been expecting this, not being very high in her classes on using her talents. She was far from being able to leave on normal circumstsances, gaining complete control of herself.

The driver nodded. "My name is Mr. Crawford. I am the precog that requested you be put into the team I lead. I have Seen that you will be useful in future plans." He stole a quick glance at her, as though evaluating how useful she'd be. "It was preferred you knew as little as possible, which is why it's called a 'briefing'."

He didn't have to be smirk at his own sordid amusement, Cat could feel it from just his tone of voice. The teasing humor wasn't appreciated.
