The Tales of Zegwar
I can go anywhere I want to do just by imagining it, if you'd like to join me all you have to do is believe. So read what I write, even those few that aren't about my make-believe world of Zegwar. I promise, fun awaits those who dare enter my mind...
Introducing the Lookout Guard: PART FOUR
It had been over a month since Josh had had his fateful and horribly memorable encounter with the Great Kit Thompson. And he couldn’t get it out of his mind. He wasn’t the only one talking about it and that didn’t make it any easier. People wanted to know about his connection with her, not that he saw that he even had one. He thought about her constantly. He couldn’t figure out why she’d even come to their town. Had it been for the demon that had impersonated Holly? He doubted that. From what he’d heard about her, which had increased exponentially since her visit, she would’ve known that there was a team there that could handle it.
He was spending more time alone lately. All anyone ever talked about lately was Kit Thompson. He was getting sick of it, people asked him about her. In truth he didn’t know much about her and he didn’t real like her all that much. They hadn’t really talked, she hadn’t even told him her name, Holly had. Until he’d heard her name she’d rather annoyed him. But he got why she didn’t tell him. Her name alone carried power. He wondered briefly how she’d managed to do the things she was famous for.
“Hey, Josh,” said Andy.
“Huh?”
“Were you even listening to me?”
“No.” He sighed and leaned back in his chair, watching his crew in their natural habitat. They were almost like animals in some ways, as were all humans. Andy kept talking and Josh kept not listening for the rest of the day. Late in the afternoon Ethan and Connor came in. Ethan was teasing him for being knocked out so easily by a girl, even if she was Kit Thompson.
“She knocked you out with a light tap man,” said Ethan, “And then threw you across a room. That’s just embarrassing.”
“Leave him alone,” said Caitlin.
“But the girl was a little pipsqueak.”
“You wouldn’t be saying that if she was here right now, would you?”
“Probably not, but she isn’t.”
“You’re an idiot.” Josh sighed and stood up. He walked right out. No one bothered him about it. He supposed that he’d been moody for a while, ever since Kit, and now they were used to it. He walked outside. It was already night out and he leaned on a tree and looked at the stars, wondering where she was. They were so different, her whole world was about magic and he really couldn’t care much about it. She was motivated to be the best; he just wanted to survive. He didn’t really like his magic all that much and he avoided using it as often as he could. He just didn’t understand her.
“Kit?” whispered Josh as he stared up lazily.
“Yeah?” asked a voice, he recognized it instantly and jumped with a scream. She was standing, very relaxed-looking, right next to him. He hadn’t sensed her at all.
“Oh my god, you’re – you’re.”
“Here?”
“Yep.”
“So what’s up?” asked Kit.
“Why are you here?”
“You invited me.”
“What?”
“You said I could join your team.”
“But you said you didn’t want to.”
“Yeah I don’t.”
“Huh?”
“I don’t really have a choice. They got kind of mad when I said no.”
“They?”
“Them,” said Kit and she looked up with a slight moan, “The higher powers.”
“Why?”
“You’re one of the notebook people.” While he didn’t know what that meant he realized that that was what she’d almost let slip in The Diner over a month ago.
“I’m a what?” She stuck her hand inside her jacket and pulled out a small, raggedy old sketchbook.
“What’s that?”
“You should feel lucky, I don’t show it to most people.” She handed it over to him. He opened it and flipped through it. Inside it was contained endless sketches of faces of people that he didn’t know, until he hit his own. It was him but he was older, unshaven and angry looking.
“You drew me?”
“Yes.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Keep going.” He did as he was told. The next couple of pages were filled with his crew. It was his crew but just like his own sketch they seamed older and changed.
“What? Have you been stalking me or something?”
“No. I filled up that entire notebook in two days. I was eight at the time.”
“What?”
“I was eight when I first sketched you.”
“I don’t understand.”
“I sketch people who will be important.”
“Important? How?”
“Not sure. So can I join your team?”
“I’ll have to ask.” He handed the notebook back to her. He thought perhaps he’d been wrong about Kit he rather liked her.
“I feel I must warn you though.”
“Warn me? What about?”
“It won’t end well between us, it never does. It’s how I know to move.”
“Do you move a lot?”
“Yes, but can we not talk about my past? While I am here I will help you. I might hurt you but I won’t mean to. And then I will leave and then some day many years later I will ask for your help. Do you agree to these terms?”
“On one condition.”
“Which would be?”
“You need help. The Seer said that I didn’t have to protect your body, I think she meant your soul. So you have to let me help you.” She looked at him for a while.
“Fine.”
“I have a question.”
“Shoot.”
“Did you really memorize the dictionary when you were six?”
“No.”
“Oh.”
“I was five.” He looked at her and they both smiled. He got the feeling there were more surprises in store for him.

I know what you mean, my cats do that all the time. I only have two cats, I'm not like a crazy cat person or anything. In real life my name's Kitty, but I'm not a crazy cat lady. (Sorry, that's a running joke with my friends, but my name is Kitty)
