Richard Trent was first real connection to the magical world and until recently he was the closest thing I had to a family. There are no words to explain how much he meant to me. But Richard wasn’t perfect. He was far too trusting and yet at the same time he was a pathological liar. He was horrible at being on time and keeping his promises. He was lazy; he smoked, drank and didn’t have the world’s highest IQ. But he had a lot of good qualities too. He was brave and honorable, a strong fighter with a very good heart. That heart was his greatest strength and most terrible weakness.
He was filled with an overwhelming desire to love. It burned him up inside and I learned how to love from him. This kind of all consuming love is hard to put into words but I can tell you that it’s not easy to feel that way even for a little bit let alone all the time, which is why we were both driven to try to kill ourselves. But when Richie found me he found someone that could not only withstand the focus of all his love but also wanted it. When you give out so much love not getting any back can hurt a great deal.
Richard had some strange ways of showing his affection. He loved to brush my hair for one thing. He was one of two people who were ever allowed to touch my hair, the other was Samuel Williams. He loved taking me shopping, buying me clothes. For the most part it was dresses, ones that I was not overly fond of wearing but if Richie called me cute it was totally worth it. He liked to give me other presents too and he took me to parties. I’d do anything to please him and so I grew my hair out the way he liked it.
I enjoyed the way he treated me. When I was with Richard I got to be a kid, I got to be cute and relax. It was the only time in my life I got to be that way. When I killed that first vampire I lost my childhood. I could never be a kid again after I found out about my magic. But then Richie came along and suddenly I got a chance to be normal kid and I took it and never looked back. However when I lost Richie I lost that for a second time.
But our attachment to each other did cause a lot of problems. For one thing he could never be objective in my training. We were too close for him to teach me how to fight properly. He did try though - he just failed. But I needed to learn so I begged him to find a way. So he sent me to the man who taught him how to fight, Master Kyonshi. Master was an angry, horrible old man. I hated him and I couldn’t stand to be around him for too long.
I used to complain about Master’s training; it was so much harder than Richie’s. But he quickly beat that out of me. I trained with him for two years, going through living hell with him only ever pilling more on, right up to the week I took my GMT exams. AS much as he was a horrid b*****d of a man he was a magnificent teacher. I despised and adored my training with him at the same time. I loved learning how to fight and from Master I learned a great deal. And Master never treated me like I was anything special and honestly I liked that. I preferred being treated like a piece of s**t instead of a prodigy, a great hero or a princess.
