Serras-Kai was not always a mage. In fact, he was at first a swordsman.
He and his teacher, Atrum unum, were wandering the world when the found a castle under siege. Kai went to help, just as the castle was stormed and overrun. Kai fought his way to the top just in time to rescue two young women that he assumed were princesses. As it turns out, one was an assassin who had a change of heart and decided to rescue the princess instead. The monster that pursued them, however, did not change sides before blasting the three off of the tower.
None of them could do anything....
Kai found himself in a bright place, staring at a man in a long, elegent black cloak holding a staff. He didn't introduce hinself, but instead gave him instructions on how to open his mind to the leylines of magic.
This action allowed Serras-Kai to save the three of them, and ever since, he has been a mage.
