Revenge of the Sith
I just got back from the new Star Wars movie. The action was good, the effects were nice. I liked the evolution of the ships to look more and more like ones from IV, V, and VI. The dialogue was bad every other emotional scene, but despite that, the story... The story was actually good. There is something appealing about a protagonist clouded and confused with what is good and what evil. And with the dualistic theology of the Jedi and Sith, it's easy to sympathize. The one thing about the story that bothers me the most though is Anakin's reason for turning to evil. His motivation is supposedly his self-sacrificing love for Padme, but I fail to see how that could lead to murdering kids the next moment. I guess they were aiming for a sort of tragic hero with a higher motive, but it just doesn't match up. Pure love does not lead to evil. It would have to be twisted first, like all evil is a twisted form of good. Now if it was more emphasized that his love turned into a lustful possessiveness and combined with his suspicion and anger, I don't think this would be as much a stumbling block. So, all in all, I enjoyed the movie, but the dualism behind the force I think will prevent me from ever obsessing over it. The portrayal of good and evil as equal opposites is more far fetched than fiery explosions and noise in space.
