In which Jen ponders the mysteries that are birthdays...
Straying from my random and otherwise pointless ramblings i've decided to delve into something a little more thought about by me. By a little more i mean i actually spent a whole minute thinking about it....the birthday cake superstition has always been somewhat of a dissapointment to me. It has also been vauge if not even a little confusing. If you blow out all of the candles you get a wish?!? If you leave some lit you have multiple boyfriends depending on the number remaining?!? How exactly does this all work? Is there some magical cake fairy? Are people just dumb? Where did this tradition spring from? In the confusion of my birthday this past Friday in which i have aged another year in my existance of life which now totals 17 i came up with my own theory. This year marks the first in a number of years in which i have not successfully extinguished all of the candles placed upon my cake. To try and determine the meaning of this i looked back and tryed to establish what was different about this birthday compared with others. It was obviousley not the number of men i lusted after as i would have had an unextinguished flame the previous few years. It was also not the number of boyfriends i was currently dragging around as i have never dated. Perhaps then, it was the number of people who lusted after me. If i think of the last few weeks i can easily name a few men who would fit into this strangely new and growing catagorey. It's as if the male population has finally realized that i exist and that i am a woman. I don't know weather to be flattered or afraid. Either way, perhaps this is the answer to the birthday cake candle mystery. Perhaps i just don't care very much. Personally, i would prefer the magical fairy to anything else.

According to an ancient Aztec tradition, the blowing out of the candles ceremoniously lit approximately every 8th of March (allowing for slight variatians between their calendar and the one we use today) represented the number of crops to be harvested in the fall. This directly correlates with the western European tradition of blowing out candles after a person's "name-day" and was carried over into the new world by the pilgrims, where it spread and became the custom now seen today.

Actually I think monkey man said it best.
