Everworld by K.A. Applegate

omfg, I love this series! Here's a few things about the books:

About Everworld
A thousand years ago humans believed in the Gods of myth, in the great legends, in dragons and trolls and elves and wizards. So, what if they were right? What if all these myths were real? Well, you'd ask, "If Thor and Apollo, dragons and dwarves were all real, where are they now?"

The answer is...Everworld.

In the dark past, Zeus and Odin, Huitzilopoctli and Ra, and the other gods of myth decided to abandon the real world. They created another universe where magic rules, where all the mystery and terror of these capricious immortals holds sway. It is a place where Vikings still sail in the name of Thor, where the Aztecs still make human sacrifices to Huitzilopoctli, and where Merlin still weaves his subtle webs.

For a thousand years and more EVERWORLD has existed apart from the real world. But now Everworld is in trouble. The cozy universe created by Earth's ancient immortals has been invaded by the creatures of myths that are no part of human tradition. The gods are under attack, divided, terrified. And in this moment of supreme danger, Loki, Norse god of evil, reaches across the barrier between Everworld and the real world to seize a new power: Senna Wales.

Senna carries with her four ordinary high school kids from the Midwest. David, the insecure hero and Senna's love; Christopher, the joker Senna spurned, who hides his own anger and bigotry beneath a glib veneer; Jalil, cold, calculating and so devoted to rationality he can't even acknowledge his own strange tie to Senna; and April, Senna's half-sister--actress, flirt, and Senna's most dangerous enemy.

Is Senna good or evil or some combination of the two? David, Christopher, Jalil and April may die trying to find out.

Characters

Senna Wales
Senna is the one that started it all. Quiet and reserved, shrouded in mystery, she was the one who dragged David, Christopher, April and Jalil with her to Everworld. But once in Everworld, she began to act smug, teasing the group with small clues about her place in the grand scheme, yet never saying her part outright. She is often referred to as "my witch" by Loki. She has the ability to cast spells on others, making them obey her every whim, or making them believe something that is false. Her recently revealed goal is to become the newest leader of Everworld; because she is the gateway between the old world and Everworld, she is able to bring over a modern army to assist in her takeover--and possible destruction--of the world.

David Levin
David was Senna's boyfriend--in the real world. In Everworld, he is the leader of the group. He was the one who said that all of them would return to the real world, or no one would return at all. Completely trusting of Senna and driven by his love for her--and the spells she has cast upon him--he follows her when no one else will and searches for her when no one else wants to. And this blind faith may eventually lead to their destruction.

Christopher Hitchcock
Christopher is Senna's ex-beau and is always the first to crack a joke. He provides the humor in the sometimes bleak, often strange world they are in, although it is often very sarcastic and derogatory. However, his humor has another purpose as well: to help constrain and categorize a world that is often confusing to him. Even though he is a comedian, he is by no means a happy-go-lucky person. He despises Everworld, is very distrustful of Senna, and is sick of David acting like the macho man of the group. He would like nothing more than to go home and live a normal life again. And he is willing to do it with or without the others.

April O'Brien
April is the level-headed half sister of Senna. In the real world, she is much more outgoing than her sister--David says that you could spend ten minutes with her and feel as if you've known her all your life. Although she desperately wants to get back home, she rarely complains and tries to shed the best light on the situation as possible. She is possibly the most mature of the group, and gets annoyed with the others being at each other's throats during tense moments. She claims that it will hinder their progress of returning home.

Jalil Sherman
Jalil is the brains of the group. When the others wonder why something is happening or what something is, they usually turn to him. Sometimes, though, he will rationalize something aloud to drown out his own panic or fill a heavy silence, which leads to Christopher's opinion that he is a know-it-all. A firm believer that magic does not exist, he is determined to find a logical explanation as to why Everworld exists. His constant rationalizing is quite possibly a by-product of the Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder he suffers from in the real world--he feels that if he can control and make sense of the world, he will be able to control and make sense of himself.

The Books

#1: Search for Senna
David's life was pretty normal. School. Friends. Girlfriend. Actually, Senna was probably the oddest aspect of his life. She was beautiful. Smart. But there was something very different about her. Something strange. And on the day it began, everything happened so quickly. One moment, Senna was with him. The next, she was swallowed up by the earth. Her screams echoing from far, far away. David couldn't just let her go. Neither could the others. His friends--and hers. So, they followed. And found themselves in a world they never could have imagined. Now they have to find Senna and get home without losing their lives. Or their minds. Or both...

#2: Land of Loss
David, Jalil, April, and Christopher have been pulled into a world that defies everything they once believed. Wolves the size of elephants, beings who consider themselves immortals, mythological gods. Nothing is like what they're used to. And it doesn't look like they're going to find a permanent way home anytime soon. It all started with Senna. Now she's missing. David and the others don't know if she's in Everworld. They don't even know if she's alive...in the human sense...

#3: Enter the Enchanted
Jalil, April, David and Chris still haven't found Senna. They still haven't found their way out of Everworld. And--though they have managed to stay alive--things are starting to get worse. Because Jalil and the others are about to encounter one of the most powerful of Everworld inhabitants. He is called Merlin. Merlin is the unseen force behind much of what happens in Everworld. And there is a good chance he knows where to find Senna. But he has his own agenda. And it doesn't necessarily include helping Jalil and the others. Now, they're about to discover what happens when you mess with Merlin...

#4: Realm of the Reaper
Things have gotten way beyond weird for David and the gang. They've been hunted by trolls, entertained Vikings, fought in a war against Aztecs and their heart-eating god, encountered Merlin, met some strange alienlike metalsmiths, and got a chance to see their very first real, live dragon. It's been a strange few days, to say the least. Their "journey" started out as a search for a friend, but things have turned dangerous. Because now April and the others are about to discover the true opposite of heaven--and it isn't a very nice place...

#5: Discover the Destroyer
Senna. The one and only reason David, Christopher, April, and Jalil are in Everworld. Senna is also the reason they can't get back to their own world. It seems she only shows up when she wants to be found. And she always disappears. At the moment, Senna is the least of their problems. Now they have to make a choice: Outsmart the dragon that killed Galahad--or die. And the odds of David and the others surviving by themselves aren't very good. But they've met some Everworld residents that might be willing to help for a price: Senna.

#6: Fear the Fantastic
No one knows what it's like to be Christopher, David, April, Jalil, or even Senna. One minute they're off to Fairy Land to recover a dragon's stolen treasure. The next they find themselves sitting in the middle of history class. All it takes to move between the worlds is to fall asleep. And they just can't seem to find a way to make it stop. Now Christopher and the others find themselves at the single most powerful area in Everworld. Olympus. As in Greek gods. As in mythology. It seems that the evil alien god, Ka Anor, plans to take Olympus for himself--and Zeus isn't having any of it. Christopher and the others know it's not their fight. But they know ultimately they're going to have to choose a side. And it probably won't be Ka Anor's...

#7: Gateway to the Gods
April and her friends are starting to get used to the bizarre. Which is why they weren't surprised when they found themselves on Mount Olympus, fighting with Zeus against an alien army. But that's nothing compared to what they're about to experience. April and the others know that the main reason they're still alive is because of their survival instincts and real-world knowledge. But in Everworld, even the things that you trust to keep you safe can be the very things to take your life...

#8: Brave the Betrayal
Jalil, David, Christopher and April have definitely made some mistakes since they've been trapped in Everworld. You have to admit, it's got to be pretty tough not to screw up when you find yourself in a place that makes absolutely no sense. So, it's pretty understandable that Jalil and the others wouldn't think twice about trading a chemistry book for an unbelievably sharp knife. For protection. After all, the Coo-Hatch seemed harmless enough. Just another group of transplanted aliens who managed to end up in Everworld. Now it seems those same aliens are combining the textbook information with their own technology to create horrific new weapons. And guess who they plan to use them on...?

#9: Inside the Illusion
Senna is the one who Jalil, David, Christopher and April have been chasing all over this strange parallel world to get some answers. To show them how to get home again. To get back to the real world. So now it's her turn to tell her side of the story. To explain why she dragged her friends into a world of winged horses and wizards. A place that once only existed in their imaginations. Now it's her turn to explain Everworld.

#10: Understand the Unknown
David, Christopher, April and Jalil accomplished what they set out to do in Egypt--they found Senna's mother and can only hope she provides the Coo-Hatch with a passage back to their own world. But now Neptune, ruler of the sea, is intent on getting the intruders off his ocean--and down into his world. On the bottom of the sea, David and the others find the lost city of Atlantis. A place where most creatures go, and never, ever return...

#11: Mystify the Magician
David, Christopher, April, Jalil and Senna somehow managed to escape Neptune's deadly clutches and have washed ashore...in Eire. It's ancient Ireland, complete with giants, leprechauns, a band of gods and goddesses, and druids. Druids who happen to be in pretty tight with Merlin. Merlin is still chasing Senna, who, along with the rest of the gang, has been forbidden to leave Eire. As usual though, Senna is anything but trapped. In fact, her power-hungry scheme is finally starting to take hold. She's crossing over her army of loyal followers from the real world to deal with Merlin. But with crazy fanatics like bloodthirsty Keith in Everworld, Christopher and the others might just be in more danger than they've ever been before. More danger than even Senna could have realized...

#12: Entertain the End
April, David, Christopher, and Jalil have come to the end of the line. Senna, their only passage back to the real world, is gone. And she's definitely not coming back. But that doesn't change any of the harm Senna managed to cause in Everworld. And April and the others know it's up to them to help Merlin make things right. But making things right involves another meeting with Hel. Hel, who before meeting April and the others had never been outsmarted. Hel, who would be more than happy to see them dead--or even better, suffering for eternity. And eternity's a might long time.
