It had been only a few days since Raoul had fled with his beloved Christine. They had put as much possible distance between them the opera house as possible in that time, and made their way to the house of one of his school friends. To escape conviction for insanity, they had decided to hide themselves from public and travel at night. Christine never spoke, and seemed as if she were often in a daze. Whenever she appeared so, Raoul assumed she was frightened that Erik still followed them, and so he put his arm around her and quickened their pace. They traveled by carriage at first, but Raoul quickly ran out of what money he had, and though it tore him apart to force his darling to walk, it was the only way to get away from that insane creature that could be anywhere he wished. Let us see if his voice can be thrown a thousand miles, he thought to himself.
But Christine was not frightened in her silence. Raoul was right in the respect that her thoughts were on the creature, no… the man, at the bottom of the opera house, but they were simply thoughts, not fears. Everything reminded her of the grief she had seen in his burning yellow eyes, even the way the viscomte had them travel. Always at night and hiding their faces… she could not imagine an entire lifetime of living like this. This is how Erik felt, afraid to show his face to anyone, to her… At this moment Raoul spoke, startling her more than any memory could.
“We’re almost there; I can see his house in the distance. No doubt the news of our disappearance has reached James’ ears, but he shouldn’t think I would let myself and my love die, so he won’t be too surprised.” Sometimes Raoul could be a little egotistical, but his actions were heartfelt. Raoul did what he thought was best for both of them, but as soon as they had left Erik’s company, he had started talking. He absolutely refused to go back there, as the heart-broken ghost had requested, even when she offered to him the information that he would be dead.
“It’s just a ploy to try and get you back, Christine. By then he’ll have devised a whole new plan to keep you there…” he’d said. At first, she had absolutely believed him and his suspicions… but then as the adrenaline of escape wore off, she began to think. As threatening as that insane man had been… she had seen into his soul with those burning eyes, full of pain, and tears. She simply couldn’t imagine anyone to be able to lie in that purely broken state.
