My name is Necara-lee Grace Simmons and I’ve been watched clandestinely since I was very young. I’ve kind of gotten use to it because I’ve been watching the ones watching me with equal care and interest for as long as I’ve known about them… which is from about the age four. I lived in Ballarat (my home when I was very young, about 3 hours from my current home in the Yarra Valley) at the time. There was this odd, dressed up kid in the park. His caretaker called him Gerome. His caretaker was called Nie and I got a deja vu flash around her but I was young and didn’t really pay much attention. I could tell something was weird about them (The way she obeyed his every demand might have had something to do with it) but not what and I’ve had eyes on me ever since. However, since they didn’t bother me, I ignored them. Things continued in this way until I hit year 10 in high school… I was 17 at the time. (Yes, I was a year or two older than the average… we’d moved about a bit before settling in the Yarra Valley.).
The interesting stuff started with my best bud Sandie, although I suppose it’s my fault too. Everyone in the school knew you didn’t mess with the Gate Club members and like most gangs they were both looked up to and down on (It depended on how old- or how stupid – you were.) I suppose calling them a gang is a bit of a misdemeanor. They were more like a cross between a university frat and the younger generation of Mafia ‘Family’. They were also exclusively a guy thing. Every guy in school aspired to become a Gate Ganger and every girl wanted to date one as to pull that off meant instant popularity and to be part of an organization which had a great deal of social power. Getting in was nearly impossible though. No one was quite sure what the requirements were but very few members from the school kid corps were accepted though.
For myself I usually avoided anything to do with them as a matter of course, ‘cause I felt they were bad trouble. To be honest they gave me the creeps and not just because they were a gang. I don’t know how many other people noticed or if any did, but no matter what bad stuff they did they were never caught at it. There was never any trouble with school authorities or the police, no matter what they did and how blatantly they did it. I’m not talking the small stuff, cutting school or walking out on class, I’m talking emptying off entire shelves at the local supermarket or walking into any store of choice and walking out with whatever they wanted up to and including cash. Store security cameras and people who saw them just seemed to… forget, as if it never happened.
I wondered how they fooled the attendance record and computers, still what were attendance records compared with busting security cam’s.
No matter who else did or didn’t notice I did and kept wasn’t saying a word. Another thing I’d noticed was attempts to get them in trouble usually backfired, with vengeance.
Like I said Baaaaad trouble!
I could feel them watching me back, so I kept my mouth shut and my head down… right up until my girl pal Sandie started crushing on one of the Gate Club boys…
…And as usual wouldn’t do anything about it. It was against my better judgement but she was really getting on my nerves with her incessant mooning over him and refusing to make a move. So, next time we had an excuse to go near the Great Gate the Gang always guarded – which happened to be right across Riversdale road, just opposite the school – I bullied her into talking to him. As there happened to be two of them, I agreed to distract the other one so Sandie could chat up her dreamboat.
