This only works if you are giving the item to someone through trade or as a gift.
Ok, what I did was:
1. Go to the marketplace and purchase the item you want.
2. Go to "My Avatar" and equip that item.
3. Give that item through a trade or send it as a gift, and you should still have the item equipped!
This works great if you have an item that you would like to keep using but are also selling/giving away. You can sell it through a trade and still have it on your avatar!
