Lillian says she saw another wizard in the castle—preposterous. That little girl constantly gets on my nerves, and I swear, if she keeps blabbing on and on about a mysterious tall man in silver robes I am going to strangle her. Stupid, stupid, stupid girls. They always think themselves clever, but really, they are brainless parasites of human beings—at least most of them, anyhow. I suppose I must admit that I have met a few who I can deal with, and should I become supreme overlord of the universe, I’ll let those select few live.

“Xanthan!” Someone interrupts my thoughts by calling my name from another part of the castle. Can’t idiots just come find me instead of screeching and flailing as they run up and down the halls like drunken, decapitated chickens? Honestly… I refuse to respond until the owner of said drunken, decapitated chicken voice is in the same room as I. Though, I will be kind to whoever they are by not moving. Sometimes I do that, just to toy with people. But instead, today I’ll lean against the wall and wait.

It’s a girl. I should have known… not that all men are brilliant either, but if the messenger girl was coming this way, she could have at least saved her breath, right? After hearing the master yell, I realized that all other yelling was pointless. Obviously, this girl didn’t let that sink in. Idiot.

“What is it you want?” I hiss, my arms crossed over my chest as I glare at—damnit, it’s that moron Lillian. I should have figured that as well.

“Xanthan!” she squeals and pounces at me, wrapping her arms around my waist and nuzzling like some sort of demonic kitten. I hate it when she does this. “Master Carsikan wants you…” my ears perk up, waiting eagerly for the rest of the sentence. I hate to admit it, but I’ve been hoping so badly that I can go inside the Master’s office. I want to please the Master and become his most loyal servant so that he may teach me the ways of magic. It’s not because I want to become a skilled mage-warrior myself—though I guess that is a part of it… but I revere him. I don’t even call him by his name the way Lillian does. It’s not dignified enough. His name should not be uttered by mortal tongues.

“What? What does he want?” I grip Lillian’s shoulders and push her away, holding her at arm’s-length and looking at her straight on. Why does she have to pause like this? Why can’t she just spit it out?! She smirks up at me.

“Master Carsikan wants you… to go shopping for him!” the girl beams and hands me a list on a piece of paper.

Shopping? I blink for a second or two before it sinks in… YES! I get to go into the village and buy him magical herbs and spices and different charm trinkets and I’ll get to see everything he uses and—wait a second… “This is just a grocery list…” I mutter and look up from the scrap of paper to glare at Lillian, but she is already scampering away.

“HAVE FUN!” she sings at the top of her lungs before falling into a fit of giggles and disappearing down one of the many castle corridors.

This is stupid.
