my mom is currently in the ICU. Sunday night she started getting incoherent and confused. after being taken to the emergency room they found traces of a urinary tract infection which could have been the cause or just signs left from an older infection. they tried getting a spinal tap several times that night and couldn't get one but they managed to eliminate a stroke, seizure, or tumor as the cause.
Monday they did more tests, eliminated a few more suspects, and tried twice more to get a spinal tap. they actually managed to get one this time and found that the spinal fluid was not the normal color. they got the tests sent out late and we won't see any results until Tuesday.
right now they've got her on antibiotics, but she's still incoherent and confused. fortunately she doesn't seem to be getting worse. the odd thing is, even with a high white cell count she had a low temperature rather than a high one. one of the doctors mentioned that could indicate a strain of the herpes virus in her system. depending on which strain it could still be pretty serious, or it could clear up very easily in a matter of a few days of IV antibiotics.
