Sitting backstage, I hurried to tie up my shoes. Organized chaos surrounded me. Parents tried to keep the younger girls under control, others helped each other with their costumes. A few of the older girls were scrambling to reapply their makeup. Everyone was hoping to be ready for their turn on stage before it came.
I myself still hadn't finished with my last shoe. Why were these things so darn hard to tie up? I chanced a glance at the other dancers from my class. They were in similar situations, or fussing with their complicated costumes. Finally, one girl came over and knelt next to my foot.
"Here," She grinned up at me, taking the ribbons from me. "It's easier if you aren't so rushed." Quickly, deftly, she wrapped the ribbons around my ankle and tied them on the inside, tucking the leftover under the other ribbons. After studying her for a moment, I recognized her as one of the senior dancers.
"Thanks," I murmured, standing as she did. I fidgeted with my costume, anxious and nervous.
"First time dancing on pointe?" She asked, absently tucking a stray hair back into her bun. My hands automatically went to my own hair, slicked tightly back into a low bun.
I nodded, noting with envy how casual she was backstage. This wasn't my first time on stage, of course, but it was my first time dancing in my pointe shoes on stage.
She glanced around the room, to see the rest of the girls from my class were all almost ready. I noticed with interest that she was the only one in the room in her costume.
"Are you a soloist?" I asked, curious. I had never seen a soloist before. Girls always danced with their respective classes. She laughed and shook her head.
"No, I'm doing a duet," She told me. She must've seen the question on my face, as she continued on to explain, "I'm doing partnering. He's... over there." She stretched out one slender, well-toned arm to point across the room at a male dancer, dressed in similar colors as she was. He was laughing and playing with some young dancers. I also noticed that he had on pointe shoes as well. He must've been the only male dancer backstage.
I let out a low whistle, impressed. Only the best dancers did partnering, where they danced with a male partner. I sighed wistfully. I wished I could be that good.
She glanced at me, and I at her. She was tall, for a dancer. Fine-boned, though, and every inch a dancer. You could tell it in the way she walked, gestured, and even held herself. She had a dancers subtle muscles, probably stronger then she looked.
I was about to as her what her name was, and how long she had been dancing, when one of the teachers appeared.
"Beginning pointe!" She called. "You're on after Hip Hop Two!"
There was a frantic scramble as I and my classmates hurried to line up. As we left to wait behind the curtain, I glanced over my shoulder. The mysterious older dancer had disappeared, as had her partner.
