Let me tell you a story. A tale, a myth, unknown to any humans. It is the story of how death began…
Long before human history, there existed the gods, and an ancient race called Neheim. During this time, death did not exist. One day, Anihil, the god of destruction, fell in love with a Neheim woman named Dehila. They were joined together, and soon Dehila was with child. There was great rejoicing, for surely the child of a god and a Neheim would be a blessing to both races. Soon, the time came for the child to be born. It was a girl. The midwife wrapped the baby in a blanket and handed her to her mother. Dehila was overcome with love for her newborn child and reached out to stroke her cheek. The moment Dehila’s finger touched the baby’s skin, all the life was pulled out of her, and Dehila died. And death entered the world.
When Anihil found out about the death of his wife, he went insane with grief. Driven by his grief, Anihil went on a murderous rampage. He killed the entire Neheim race, destroying not only their bodies, but also their souls. Dehilia’s soul alone was untouched.
When Anihil turned his bloody sights on the gods, they decided they had to stop him. Anihil was quickly subdued and destroyed. But death had already entered the world, and couldn’t be taken out. When humans were created, they had to be created mortal. So the girl-child, the one who had started this chain of reactions, was put in charge of the afterlife. She was told that when humans died, she was to collect their souls and bring them into her realm. As the human race grew, she was given two of her father’s advisors, Alecto and Tisiphone, to help her. So the girl came to rule the realm of the dead.
And that is how I, Death, entered the world.
