Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. One of my favourite books actually and one of his most famous. But Dr. Seuss' books are far more deep and complex than they appear, or so I believe. I was talking about this today and this book came to mind. Here's what I think it means:
I can remember this book pretty well from memory. You can also just look the book over, but I'm going to reference the article on Wikipedia about Green Eggs and Ham. I think this book is expressing Dr. Seuss' views on prostitution. Think about the overall theme. It's about this guy who doesn't want to try something questionable. (that being the green eggs and ham-seems pretty questionable) Through out the book, his friend, Sam I am, attempts to persuade him to try it. Sam I am does this by suggesting his friends tries it in different locations with different partners. (the wikipedia article used the term "dining partners" wink In the end Sam I am's friend finally tries it and likes it.
Now let's compare: "green eggs and ham" is the overall theme of prostitution as I see it. Maybe Dr. Seuss intended for "green eggs and ham" to be the actual prostitutes("I do not like them in a box"?). I also see that green eggs and ham could be the term used to describe sexual body parts of the prostitute. (eggs?)
The different locations of "dining" Sam I am suggests in the book most likely means hotels to "try out" prostitution. (His friend may not like it in a cheap hotel, but may like it more in his own home) But it's also a possibility the different locations are the source of prostitutes, such as different pimps.
Of course the different "dining partners" in the story would be the different prostitutes.
That's what I think Green Eggs and Ham is really about.
