Flora stood before the mirror waiting to be summoned for the coronation. She turned to the side smoothing down the fabric of her elegant gown. The whole village had arrived that morning as honored guests. It had been quite a shock for them to see her dressed as a princess. Flora couldn’t help but wonder what they thought of her now.
“That ring really should have picked someone more fitting.” She told the mirror image of herself. “This isn’t the real me.”
“The ring chooses the only person capable of being princess. It waits for the princess and will only appear when she has taken on the emotions or ideas worthy of the role.”
Flora turned surprised to find an elderly gentleman she had never seen before standing in the doorway. He bowed low to greet her properly.
“Allow me to introduce myself, milady. I am the one who sent out the ring to find you. My name is Sir Deutzia of Nikko. My family has held that ring in its care for generations. Whenever no female heir is produced and no female relation is willing or capable of assuming the throne we are summoned.”
“How does it find a capable princess?” Flora asked curiously. “How can it be sure there is no mistake?”
“We have never had a bad queen chosen by this ring, my dear, I highly doubt it would start now.” Sir Deutzia laughed kindly. “As for how. We simply ask and send the ring on it’s way.”
“What did you ask for?”
“‘A princess who will bring the peace needed for our suffering realm.’”
“You said it was waiting for me but wasn’t it sent out over ten years ago? I’ve been all over the forest but I’ve never seen the rosebush where I found the ring.”
“The rose is the symbol of our monarchy. When you were able to find the ring the bush appeared for you. It’s a part of the magic behind the ring. As for what made the ring appear you must have had a change of heart about something.”
“A change of heart?” Flora thought to herself about what happened days previous to when she found the ring. She looked down at the floor as she remembered.
“Did you think of something, milady?”
“Yes. I met a dark ethereal. He was a childhood friend of Aero’s.”
“What was your initial though of him?”
“Honestly. I didn’t like him very much.” Flora told him. “I though he was going to take Aero away from us. Instead he wanted to stay with us. He was a really great person.” She smiled at the memories. “He even tried to save me from Prince Rook. Somehow we all became friends.”
“Is your friend Aero the light ethereal girl?” He asked curiously.
“Yes.”
“Then you’re exactly what we asked for. You brought peace between members of all the realms. I’m sure you’ll do the same for this realm.” Sir Deutzia bowed once more before extending his arm to escort her. “The time has come for your coronation, milady Flora.”
The carriage began the winding journey through the forest as it headed to the destination of the coronation. The sun was hardly a glow in the distant sky. Flora pushed aside the curtains to see where they were headed.
“Milady.” Sir Deutzia called as he noticed. “Do you see the tree up ahead? That is our destination.”
“A tree?” She looked ahead and noticed a tree rising above all the others. It’s foliage spread higher and farther as if it were a small mountain reaching out of the forest. “How can a tree grow so much bigger than the others?” She exclaimed.
“That tree is sacred. It’s the main reason the capitol is where it stands today. We don’t wish to harm this tree in any way yet at the same time we can’t seem to leave it. Many believe it’s roots reach down and drink the pure spring water of the earth absorbing the magical properties the water holds. Some say the fruit holds healing abilities that can surpass those of a unicorn. As for me I believe both. Miracles happen here. There are countless stories where people on the brink of death have been restored. Just you wait, my dear, then you can see for yourself.”
The sun began to rise over the horizon giving a glow to the sacred tree. It truly seemed magic as the dew sparkled on every leaf. Flora was mesmerized at the sight as they arrived beneath the branches. Life seemed in full bloom as the roses along the path reached their fragrant blossoms to the sky. Butterflies flittered from bloom to bloom on their silent wings.
“We’ve arrived.” Sir Deutzia announced as he stopped the carriage. He opened the carriage door and helped Flora down the steps. A crowd was gathered sitting on long benches before the grand tree. A hush covered the crowd as Flora came into view. As Flora passed down the center isle the assembly like a wave rising as she passed. The faces she passed were old and knew but all shone with delight at her presence. Even she was filled with a feeling of comfort despite her earlier anxiety. The only answer that came to mind was the magic of the tree. Looking ahead she saw a woman waiting dressed as regally as a queen herself, behind her stood four of the ladies in waiting.
The women motioned the assembly to sit. “Earth, fire, water, and wind.” As she said each word one of the ladies in waiting produced the element before them. “Each is present in their purest form. The light that lives you, Flora, also lives in these. The pure light of our princess will bring the peace of our realm. To every creature your light will shine.” She turned walking back to pick up a bundle of cloth. Carrying it back she presented it to Flora. “You may unwrap it.”
Flora did as she was instructed. The cloth revealed a large, heavy gold egg. Flora had never seen an egg so big and couldn’t stop herself from gazing it’s shimmering shell.
“Do you know what this is?” The woman asked. Flora shook her head. “This is the egg of a dragon. The most powerful breed of the Faery Realm and yet you hold it in it’s most fragile state. Once it hatches it will grow in power until it rises above all other creatures. You are also in this state. You have not yet reached your true potential. As princess you will grow to your true power and one day rule over us all as our beloved queen.” Applause sounded from the assembly as a tiara was handed to the woman. “It is now time for you to hatch from your shell. It is my honor to crown Flora of Light as Princess Flora of the Faery Realm!” Flora turned to the crowd as they stood bowing and curtsying to her.
“Dear Princess, is there anything you wish to tell your people?”
“People of the Faery Realm.” She began as the people sat. “I will indeed lead this realm to peace. True peace for all of its members and hopefully my peace will reach beyond this realm. Though it may seem naïve I truly do hope that all realms will one day achieve peace with each other. Dark and light together.”
