This review will be shorter than most, as Cloverfield is basically "The Blair Monster Project". The film is shot entirely by camcorder, which is good for a visceral, realistic feel in a movie. However, it is not a good method to use when you want your audience to understand something, such as how Matt Reeves and the staff responsible for creating the creature wanted you to know that the creature was an infant and lost and confused. I'm sorry, but I kind of missed that between it smashing a bridge with civilians on it, lunging at helicopters that are unarmed and randomly chomping on guys with video cameras. Then there's the head explosion sequence that could have rivaled the one from "Scanners" in notoriety had they actually shown it. That was pretty weird. Another downside to the whole camcorder view is that there is pretty much no backstory. No info on what the f*ck is going on (which I'm sure J.J. Abrams, the guy who made Lost, wanted, but it still pissed me off), why the monster seems to have a "main-character radar" that allows it to track our protagonists everywhere, or why everyone in the movie is a f*cking moron. I mean seriously, how do these people survive in New York? Only one character was smart enough to grab a weapon during the attack by some nasty parasites, and she gets her head exploded. And don't get me started on how the movie ends. I swear, if Abrams does that with Lost, he will be dead within the week. Just saying.
