Months.
It's been months since I could look outside my apartment window and feel at peace. The clanking of metal and the grinding of gears were much less of a nuisance than I could remember. The sun had barely started to rise and yet I found myself wide awake, unable to cancel my thought processes. I smiled, nestled up in my wide windowsill and Retrostacja snoring softly in my lap.
Durem hadn't seemed like a bad place until I had gone there several months ago, requested to try and fix the clock tower. I hadn't realized how important Gera's job as a peacemaker was until I went into the vampire raving town. There was a reason why robots didn't leave Aekea; two forms of immortals don't exist well together at all. One was made of body, and one was made of mind.
Granted, there were a select few exceptions, but for the most part, the blood suckers couldn't stop sneering and jesting at me, a simple mechanic. Thank Lanzer the Tower was eventually fixed and I could go home.
And it was nice, being back home. Sure, I couldn't afford my old apartment since the rent was way past due, but a little remodeling of the top floor of the Pit Stop, that had once been a viewing floor for the races was now my home. Sure, the furniture was minimal at the moment, but I made sure to hang my Aekea flags high on the wall.
The blueberry coffee steamed inside the checkered mug that rested on my knee, a comforting smell that made me almost instantly forget about why I hated Durem. "Time to get to work," I said, mostly to myself. Wrapping my arm under Retrostacja's stomach, I quickly realized that my little puppy wasn't so little anymore. "I need to take you for more walks," I groaned with a laugh, setting the Roro down into his bed. He barely stirred, only flickering an eye open and grunting when he laid back down.
After a quick sip of the coffee, I set it down on my desk and picked up the outline for the Aekea Journal Juniper and I had been working on. The new co-editor sure was a handful! Working nearly day and night, running through ideas and spell-checks with her own companion, Taru. The journalist was non-stop, even for a robot's standards. Then again, working under the famous Cindy Donovanh must do that to people.
Juniper had asked me to keep an eye out for good stories for the front page; the girl had already lined up and finished the spotlight interview and had her hands deep in work for the recruitment booth for the Guild. I skimmed through the announcements from the Admins quickly, caught between several interesting topics not just for the front page, but....the new Labeling system I heard Logan rant about was perfect for the Editorials.
Putting out my cigarette, I stretched back against my chair and began to work.
