I looked at my full plate of food, shrugged, and threw it away, then headed to my next class.
"'Sup, girlfriend! What was all that about?" someone called.
I turned in surprise, then gave a tolerant smile and replied, "Hey, Sasha. What's up?"
"Don't give me that! Tell me! What's going on between you and Isuke? Everyone at our usual table wants to know! Have you two been secretly dation or something? And what was up with the looks on your faces when he left? Did I miss something?"
I held up my hands to make her to stop.
"Okay, first, we've never talked 'til today, so of course we haven't been dating. Second, yes, you did miss something, and so did I, because I have no idea why the hell he gave me such a weird look. Good enough for you?" I replied.
"No," she said, crossing her arms.
"Well, too bad, 'cuz that's all you're getting out of me right now."
"But, Senna..."
"End of discussion."
The rest of the day passed on like this, with my friends repeatedly asking for details, and me refusing to talk.
When the last bell finally rang, I practically ran to get away from school and my friends, and to be with Isuke again and interrogate him about his weird behavior earlier.
I knew exactly where the bus stop was, and I jogged most of the way. Isuke was right; it really wasn't that far, and in a few minutes I saw the bus stop on the other side of the street.
Isuke was already there.
Since the nearest intersection or crosswalk was too far away, and I didn't want to make him wait any more, I decided to jaywalk.
Bad idea.
Halfway across, I noticed that the bus was coming. And it wasn't decelerating. And I was in the way.
What I didn't know was that the brakes weren't working.
I tried to run, but, or course, I tripped, directly in the path of the bus.
The last thing I saw as I fell was Isuke's horrified face, and I knew he could do nothing.
"SENNA!" he screamed.
I felt something hit me, and then everything faded into blackness.
